We are continuing our Cyber Safety information for parents and families. This week we are sharing how important it is to evaluate site information and assist students to identify reliable and reputable information sources. Common Sense on Online Research

31 November 2013

What’s the Issue? The Internet is bursting with information. Some of it’s correct, some of it’s questionable, and some of it is just plain wrong. The Internet is typically the first place young people look when they begin researching a report or are just browsing for information on their favourite topic. But as you know, not everything they find on the Web can be trusted. Skills they learn about research and evaluation in primary school will provide them a foundation they’ll continue to use in middle school and beyond. Why Does It Matter? Anyone can publish on the Internet, so not all sites are equally trustworthy. Teens have the ability to be sceptical, but younger children tend to believe what they read and accept it as the truth. When children find sources online that aren’t of high quality, they risk using incorrect information, getting only part of the story, and worst of all, denying themselves the opportunity to truly learn as much as possible about a topic.

Inside this issue:

When children use a website for their research, they should make sure it’s worthy of their trust. Fortunately, there are ways to evaluate the trustworthiness of a site. Along with choosing sites with good design and at the right reading level, kids should evaluate the substance and content of the material.

Please return your child’s form even if they do not have a medical condition. We appreciate your support as we start collecting the information. Forbes Public School Newsletter

Remembrance Day Service

State Carnival

Forbes Public School has been invited to join the local Remembrance Day service on Monday, 11 November 2013. Our captains have also been asked to assist in the wreath laying ceremony. We will assemble at the Cenotaph in Victoria Park 10.30am in preparation for the service to begin at 11am.

On the 16th and 17th of October, Ruby Stitt, Amy Gallagher and Tom Steele–Park competed at the State Athletics Carnival in Sydney. They all gained great experience from making it to the carnival.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to take part in on Remembrance Day and our participation in this service will provide a meaningful and memorable experience.

Amy Gallagher made it to state in the 11yrs High Jump. Her event was delayed so she went to Circular Quay, caught the ferry to Manly and went swimming at the beach. The next day, Thursday, she did really well and jumped a height of 1.28m.

Relay for Life

Ruby Stitt also went really well in the 10yr High Jump by jumping 1.17m which was a little below her personal best of 1.21m. However she loved every bit of it.

On Friday, 8 November we will be holding a mini Relay for Life walk to support the Cancer Council.

Tom Steele-Park competed in the 9yr Boys 100m coming 8th in his heat. His time was 15.13sec.

Students are encouraged to wear their relay for life shirt if they have one or something purple.

By Ruby Stitt

We will be walking around the oval and welcome family and friends to join us. We would ask that students please bring in a gold coin donation, which will go to the Cancer Council. Infants students will be walking from 9.10am to 10.00am. Primary students will be walking from 10.00am to 11.00am.

Helping your child with Counting One of the first experiences children have with numbers is “counting”. Counting starts as learning a pattern of words, just like a nursery rhyme. Children learn the pattern of counting words by repetition. Children should be given lots of opportunities to practise and explore counting groups as well as making groups. What can you do at home? Count with your child the number of buttons as you do up a cardigan or shirt. Encourage your child to count the number of pegs used to hang out the washing. Count the number of steps from the front door to the letterbox. Ask your child to start counting from a number other than one. This will help them when they need to add two groups together and can start counting from the larger group. Ask your child to tell you the number before or after a number. How old will you be next year? How old were you last year? For further information on transition to school contact: Danielle Lemon Early Childhood Liaison Officer Issue No 17 2013

Congratulations to Ruby, Amy and Tom. Forbes Public School is very proud of you.

“Bin-a-Book” - Giving books a new life During National Recycling Week Monday, 11— Sunday, 17 November, Forbes Birth to Kinder will be collecting pre-loved children’s books to recycle and reuse in our local community. Forbes Public School will have a colourful Otto bin in the office foyer to collect books to support this initiative. Your support of “Bin-a-Book:” would be much appreciated.

Thank You The children and staff of the Forbes Public School Support Unit would like to say a huge thank you to the members of the Central West Bird Club for their kind cash donation. This donation will be used to go towards resources for our classrooms.

Intensive Swimming The Intensive Swimming Program will be running from November 18 until November 29. A note outlining times children will be attending the pool and requirements will be sent home the week before. It is important that your child learns to swim and be safe around water. We encourage all students to attend on a regular basis. Children also need follow up to reinforce skills, so please try and take your child to a pool to practise the skills learnt during lessons.
