Wishing you a

Happy Christmas Much of this year has been overshadowed for me by illness, so I am going to look forward in this letter to 2010, rather than back. I am very grateful for the love, prayers and many cards I received from CMM supporters whilst I was ill and unable to work for months. Thank you all. With the end of ROCK and the 3-yearly cycle of big touring musicals, there will be limited funds in the East Birmingham Renewal Group (EBRG) Trust. From January I will be working only 18 hours a week for CMM. I would appreciate your prayers for fulfilling work that will employ my gifts as a musician and my desire to encourage and build others up, and will provide for me financially. Roger, Mary and Helen will be continuing full-time as before with the ministry and administration of CMM. CAN I HELP YOU? Music typesetting - arranging - transcribing - viola and keyboard playing - fast and accurate copy-typing I can transcribe from audio recordings and produce sheet music. 3 recent examples are:

Choir trainer Sarah Moreton (Watford choir) sent me a recording of 'Love can build a bridge'. She could hear (and reproduce) what the soloist was singing, but there was also a gospel choir singing harmonies in the background. I listened to the CD and then transcribed the choral parts for her choir to sing Christian Jazz violinist Pete Hartley wanted to play some tracks at a concert from an album he had recorded years ago, but was having trouble reproducing what he heard. I listened to the mp3 files and reproduced sheet music for him of exactly what he had played My godson David recently played the Allegretto from Palladio by Karl Jenkins in the National Children's Orchestra and enjoyed it (you may know it as the theme from the diamonds advert). It is only available for piano or string orchestra, so I downloaded the mp3 file for him onto a CD, and then transcribed the 1st violin part by ear for him to play along with the CD CMM I am working on several new creative projects for CMM at the moment: The Roger Jones Song Collection (music book and recording), a new collaboration between Roger and hymnwriter Bishop Timothy Dudley-Smith (author of Tell out my soul, among many others) - and one project I am particularly excited about: a reflective instrumental album of Roger's gentler ballads - on viola. We hope to have this available to buy in the Spring.

MUSICAL-in-a-DAY If you haven't yet done a Roger Jones musical from scratch in a day, would you like to invite me to lead a day at your church, or group of churches? Making a musical brings people together for a day of fun, fellowship and encouragement, and gives you an enjoyable and nonthreatening event the same evening to which you can invite your friends, family and neighbours. There is very little in the way of organisation to do beforehand, and the day can pay for itself if you have a good number taking part. All you need is a free Saturday in the church's calendar. I will bring the soloists and music books to buy or borrow. Musicals to choose from include: Jerusalem

Joy, David, Apostle, Jairus' Daughter, Stargazers, Away in a Manger, The Torn Curtain, From Pharaoh to Freedom, Saints Alive, Greater than Gold, The INN Crowd, Wildfire.

HOME I am greatly enjoying my wood-burning stoves now that the weather is turning colder. I spend the first hour of each day sawing and chopping wood. Dad has given me a work-bench for Christmas, and I enjoy the physical labour involved in filling the log baskets before starting work each day. And when I checked with my energy supplier, I found that using the log-burning stoves downstairs over the last twelve months has more than halved my gas bills! I spend my days off (to quote a Christmas carol) 'gathering winter fu-el' from nearby woods or skips. I am very fortunate to have several friends who keep me supplied so that I have not yet had to buy any logs. And I've come to a good arrangement with a single chap at church who is a carpenter and wood-turner: he supplies me with wood offcuts and logs, and I supply him with cakes and bakes. Seems like a fair swap!

I will be staying with my brother Ian (above) and his partner Kae and their new kittens before Christmas, then with dear friends the Perrins at Weston-super-Mare over Christmas itself, and then in Dunster with Gay and Da for a couple of days from the 27th. I will close with verses that have helped to sustain me in recent months

Do not be afraid - I am with you I am your God - let nothing terrify you I'll make you strong and I'll help you I will protect you and I'll save you [Isaiah 41:10]

As well as my petrolsaving and fun little Smart car, I've just bought a second-hand ladies' bike for local journeys, to save on petrol and keep me fit.

With love,
