Guidance on using and installing software for DL Epidemiology * * * This information is also provided on your CD * * *

New core module students receive two CDs – the EPM core module CD and a separate Stata software CD and license information. Continuing core module students receive only the updated EPM core module CD. New elective (advanced) module students will receive one CD for each module for which they are registered. Continuing elective module students will receive another copy of a module CD only if it has been updated from the previous year.

Each CD includes computer-aided learning (CAL) sessions, much relevant software and documents and for modules that require use of the Stata statistical software, the Stata datafiles (*.dta and *.hlp). These files need to be installed from the CD to your PC. Where there is more than one module on an EPM CD (such as the core module CD), the relevant files for these modules will be installed together i.e. EPM101, EPM102 and EPM103 CAL sessions will be installed at the same time 1. Getting started Put the CD into the drive in your computer. Run (double–click) the ‘index.html’ file held on the CD. You will see a menu listing various options. We recommend you follow the instructions which will guide you through the following four steps: i. ii. iii. iv.

Access two key documents: the module introduction and the module specification. Install Stata (if you need to), Stata ado and data files, and additional software such as EpiData as needed Install the CAL sessions and associated materials or run them from the CD Access useful documents

2. The Module Introduction and Module Specification These are two very useful documents. If possible, you should print the module introduction and specification documents so that you have them available.

3. Software First, install Stata If you are a new student and are registered for a course where Stata is used, we recommend the first thing you do is to install the software “Stata” from the separate Stata software CD. You should complete the Stata registration form and return it to Timberlake, who will then email you back with authorisation and serial codes to enable you to install the software. It is important that you install the Stata software as soon as you receive your serial number and authorisation codes from Timberlake – and that you keep these safe. If you lose your Stata serial number and authorisation code and need to reinstall Stata in the future (i.e. on a new PC) you may have to purchase another copy of the Stata licence. Installing other software Depending on the specific module you are installing, you may need to install additional software and other related items. The contents of each CD is module specific. In each case there will be a link for you to run the installation procedures.

4. Installation of the module sessions The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine currently delivers Computer-Assisted Learning materials using two different approaches. Most of our materials are delivered through an HTML interface, while three modules (EPM202, EPM304 and EPM306) use a programme called Authorware. You may notice slight differences in installation and access instructions for these materials. Most people will want to install the computer-assisted learning material to their local computer, though it is also possible to run the materials direct from the CD. In order to avoid any clashes we suggest that before you install your new materials please rename the folder where you have any existing materials stored from C:\EPM to C:\EPM_2011. This will not affect the functioning of your existing materials. You will be directed below to install your new materials in a new folder called C:\EPM. Thank you. In step 6 below we show how you can run your materials. 5. Documents On the set-up menu you will also see a “Documents” tab. This provides links to other materials that you will need in studying the module. The content of this folder varies across the modules, but may include some or all of the following: • •

the module introduction and module specification pdf copies of the material you will access through the CAL session. Many students find them useful for revision purposes as they can be printed out – but they do not replace the CAL material which we suggest you work through first as they are not interactive and do not show all the material accessed through CAL.

6. Running the CAL material For all modules except EPM202 EPM304 and EPM306 You access your materials through a ‘Module Map’ which can be now found in your new C:\EPM subfolder. To start double click ‘start.html’. For EPM202, EPM304 and EPM306 . This is also in the drive To run the CAL sessions, you will need to find and run the file C:\EPM, or wherever you elected to install the materials. You will be taken to an Authorware menu through which you can access your materials.

7. Running the materials direct from the CD You can also run the CAL materials directly from the CD which is now in your machine. Most people will not need to use this function – as it will be quicker and easier to run the materials from your local hard drive where we have just installed them. It is however possible to run the CAL material directly from the CD, without needing to install the files directly to your PCs hard drive. This might be useful if you are experiencing problems with the CAL installation.
