A charity fun walk in aid of Kerry Life Education's Harold Project was held in Kenmare on Sunday 21st March starting at the Square and doing the two mile bridge loop. It was a lovely day for the 5 mile walk and around 40 walkers took part including some students from Kenmare National Schools and 77 year old Kilgarvan Resident Kay Cheeseman who managed to raise over €1,300, with many Kenmare and Kilgarvan residents sponsoring her walk. Kay was accompanied on the walk by her friend, Kenmare resident Margaret Dalton. Cllr. Patrick Connor Scarteen and Senator Mark Daly helped with the organisation of the walk and Patrick welcomed the walkers on the day and was present throughout the event. Refreshments for the walkers were very kindly sponsored by Rory O'Sullivan of Hallisseys Cash & Carry. Kerry Life Education Project Manager Chris Barrow, Educator Seamus and Harold the Giraffe all send their sincere thanks to the children and families of Kenmare for their ongoing, steadfast support for Children's Charity, Kerry Life Education.

Good luck to Aaron Buckley who will be representing Kerry in the finals of The Community Games next month in Athlone. Aaron, who is a member of Kenmare Kestrels and chose basketball as his theme, came first in the U10 claymodelling in CastleIsland in March.

Rachel and Rebecca O’Sullivan pictured with Brian Finnegan after their performance in Tap your Feet Tap Your Feet traditional Irish music and dance workshop, was a culmination of step dancing, traditional music and singing. Pobalscoil Inbhear Sceine offered its facilities during the Easter break to provide tuition to 40 youngsters. The course facilitators Bernie O’Sullivan, (Kenmare Community Irish Dancing School) and Eilish Byrne-Whelehan, (Feith an Cheoil School of Irish Traditional Music, London) delighted Kenmare on Friday evening when they provided a celebration of culture, that was certainly not to be missed. The night was compared by Kenmare’s very own Ray D’Arcy, Mike Murphy; who with his inimitable wit and repartee, offered praise and warm encouragement to all those who took part. Small groups took to the stage to display

their incredible talents in singing, step dancing and music. There were fiddles, flutes, tin whistles, bodhráns, button accordians, and the harp played beautifully by Claire O’Shea. Brian Finnegan wowed us with his award winning songs that won him first prize in the TG4 Glas Vegas talent show, one

rendition of which was ‘I Am A Star’, never a more apt song, was performed by Brian, a true professional who was applauded by all his adorning fans. Accompaniment to assist these talented youngsters was provided by Andy Whelton, one of our favourite local musicians, along with World Champion fiddle player Eilish Byrne-Whelehan. A wonderful, memorable evening was had by all, none more so than by our rising local stars. Great thanks go to Bernie O’Sullivan for allowing the children of Kenmare to showcase their talents, and for the Carnegie Arts centre for once again providing a fabulous local venue which is a vital lifeblood for our local arts groups.

The Kenmare Horse Show Ltd committee would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all who attended the quiz night on the 5th of March in Brooklane hotel. This year’s quiz was our best to date. It is truly wonderful that so many people showed up on the night to support the Show. This in turn encourages us in the belief that all the hard work going into organising the Show is worth it. We were also kindly given two days of bag packing in Murphy’s Supervalu over the Easter weekend. So thank you for support us again. Many thanks to all in the Kenmare community for their very generous support, and make a note this year the Horse Show is on June 6th, the Sunday of the June bank holiday. The Parent Association for Cahir National School would like to express their gratitude to all who supported their coffee morning on Friday February 12th. We are trying to raise funds to purchase interactive boards for the school and were amazed at everyone’s generosity in these difficult economic times. Thank you again to the Quill family for providing the venue in the Lansdowne Arms hotel. A huge thank you to all parents and family members who baked delicious cakes, buns and scones, thank you to all who came for a coffee and a chat on the morning, all the offices in town for popping in for elevenses. In addition, a heartfelt thank you to the many businesses and individuals who gifted raffle prizes, vouchers and goodies (even paintings) for the raffle. Finally, a good pat on the back to all who helped on the day and in its preparation. The coffee morning was a real success and also a great social occasion for us parents who don’t have the time to chat at the school gates!

Kenmare Hospital I met with Minister for Health, Mary Harney TD, on Thursday 15th April to discuss the progress on Kenmare Hospital. The project team at Kerry HSE have completed the design brief for the hospital. This information has been sent to the HSE estates section in Dublin led by John Brown. Over the next 4 weeks they will review the design brief and add the necessary tender and legal elements. The tender documents and design brief will be sent to the preferred design and build companies who will then have to make a presentation to the Kerry HSE project team. A recommendation as to who should be awarded the contract will be made by the project team. The HSE are hopeful that the sign off on the contract will take place in June/July. After meeting a number of farmers in the area who are interested in supplying the new hospital with renewable energy products, I asked the project team to include in the brief that the design in the new hospital will include renewable resources as part of the contract. This has been done and I hope that with further meeting with the successful bidder that we will be able to arrive at a situation whereby the fuel to heat the hospital will be supplied locally, resulting in jobs and money being kept in the area.

Process for the Removal Western Relief Road from Kenmare Development Plan to be asked of Kerry County Council by Councillor Michael Cahill The minutes of the meeting of Kerry County Council showed that Cllr Patrick Connor Scarteen made every effort to remove all reference to the Western Relief Road from the Kenmare Development Plan. The same cannot be said of other public representatives who only proposed to remove the line that indicated the route but retain the wording for a western relief road remain in the plan. This action has had the effect of retaining the objective for tourists to bypass the town directly and for the landowners west of a line of the town having their lands semi sterilised as per a letter i received from the National Roads Authority. The Process involved in the Removal Western Relief Road from Kenmare Development Plan is being asked by Councillor Michael Cahill of the Council. Success for Bonane residents on battle over extraction from Sheen River I would like to congratulate all concerned in the success of this campaign including the public

representatives from all sides but most especially the people of Bonane for their great campaign. It is over 2 years since I was first contacted by Stevie O'Sullivan about the threat to farming and the community posed by the proposal to extract water from the Sheen River. From my experience with the inaccuracies in the government report on the Valentia Coast Guard Station, I urged Stevie to analyse the report and figures being supplied by the council. As a result, John Skilling was asked to lend his considerable knowledge to the cause. Johns analysis of the first council report incovered massive inaccuracies which played a large part in the result which has been achieved. I would also like to thank the sic Fianna Fail councillors (Cllr.Michael Cahill, Cllr.Tom Fleming, Cllr. Paul O'Donoghue, Cllr. Aine McEllistrim, Cllr. Micheal O'Shea and Cllr. Norma Foley) who did not support the Kerry County Council proposal from the outset. The public meeting organised by Fianna Fail cumman held in the Commercial on 18 February 2010 was vital in persuading the Fíanna Fáil councillors in the county to support the people of Bonane. At the meeting I proposed a motion that water should be extracted from a different source other than rivers in the area. This was unanimously backed by those present. With the support of the people of the town for this motion I was able to persuade my party colleagues that the people of Kenmare were behind Bonane. It had been portrayed by some that this was not the case. This motion was key in proving to the Councillors in other areas that I would again like to congratulate all involved. The next challenge is to ensure the council carry out the wishes of the people and proceed with extracting water from the alternative sources identified. €80,000 to be spent on road resurfacing and traffic calming on Railway Road. From my contact with the council I have ensured that they will spent €80,000 on the Railway Road resurfacing as soon as the settlement of the fill around the recently laid water pipes. As part of these funds the council will also put in badly needed traffic calming measures that will slow the traffic near the schools. Burnt out car at Looscaunagh Lake I have asked the council to remove the burnt out car on at Looscaunagh Lake on the Ring of Kerry. Tourism is vital for jobs in the area and anything that would lessen visitors' enjoyment of the scenery need to be tackled. It is important that illegal dumping and littering is reported immediately to the relevant authorities.

Kenmare News Youth Cafe funding for Kenmare As Deputy Seanad Spokesperson on Youth Affairs I have been working with Minister Barry Andrews to get new funding for Youth Cafes. This week there was an announcement of €1.5 million for equipment and facilities for new and existing youth cafes. The Kenmare Kerry Diocesan Youth Service provides a safe place and valuable facility for teenagers in the area to go to. Joy Clifford has played a key part in the centre in Kenmare and working with all concerned. I hope to secure funds for it

Delivery of equipment to Ardbhearna Saoirse Foundation. Congratulations to all those involved in the fundraising efforts for the Saoirse Foundation. Kenmare's District Board clubs of Kenmare, Tuosist, Templenoe and Kilgarvan joined forces to collect money at half-time during the Kerry v Monaghan league game. The sum of €14,472 was raised. Also, the great success of the Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday was evident by the hundreds of people down in Reen na Gross and the night in Brooklane was enjoyed by all. It is a great sign of our community that so many events have been held and are being organised in the coming months. I know that Mary, Tony, Saoirse and Liam appreciate the enormous generosity shown by so many.

With John O’Hare

As John O'Hare has been a little under the weather of late, and we all wish him a speedy recovery, we take a look back at one of John's memorable stories about fishing trips in times gone past........ Willie ‘Hassem’ Moriarty, Denis ‘Gorey’ Lynch, Florry McCarthy and myself decided that we should go up to Lough Buai on top of The Lep Mountains to try and catch some of the big trout that supposedly lurked in its depths. Florry knew the way as his mother was from the last house on the road to The Lep and had married into Kenmare. My old convertible Morris Minor was the transport, although we knew that road was so bad in those days that we could not reach the top of The Lep on four wheels, so an awful amount of hiking would be the order of the day. Still, inspite of all the fishing gear, sandwiches, kettle etc we were carrying the lads brought some bottles of the black stuff to keep up their energy levels, or so they said! And off we went after a brief stay in ‘The Commercial’ collecting ‘Hassem’ and ‘Gorey’, up Bonnane, over Dromnagorteen Bridge and, as we approached Fiachna churchyard, ‘Florry’ asked had we ever seen The Butter Stones. No, was the answer so we duly stopped and inspected this unusual boulder with its recesses and round butter pat type stones fitting into them, also a couple of hidden ones that Florry knew about. We were impressed by Florry’s knowledge of their purpose but to this day I do not believe that they were for grinding corn. On we went, high up The Lep Road until we had to leave the car and start climbing. Eventually,

Phone 064 6642111 / Fax 064 6642121 Email: [email protected] after what seemed hours, we sighted the lake and the excitement of some place new made us forget our tiredness and we started fishing carefully as it was not a big body of water and the four of us were enough anglers to be there. ‘Goreys’ Katy did it fly and the first to catch a trout and a beautiful fish it was, golden brown with big red spots and weighing at a guess two pounds. We all inspected it and swore it was the grandest trout we ever saw. Then back to fishing with even more enthusiasm. Trout were caught by ‘Hassems’ fancy, ‘Florrys’ orange grouse and my own invicta. All handsome fish but none as big as ‘Goreys’ first one, and so a wonderful day passed by and the big hike back to the car loomed in front of us. After we had travelled for about a mile of rough hill ‘Hassem’ said he was worried about the weight ‘Gorey’ was carrying and felt it was too much strain on him. He suggested that he would carry ‘Goreys’ fishing basket for him, an offer which was readily accepted. ‘Florry’ and I looked at each other in surprise as ‘Hassem’ had never worried about the load ‘Gorey’ was carrying before. When we eventually reached our transport ‘Hassem’ said let us have another look at all the trout while they are fresh and emptied his basket out on the grass. ‘Florry’ and I did the same but when ‘Gorey’ turned out his the biggest frog I ever saw hopped out of the basket of fish and away into the long grass. ‘Gorey’, in the meantime, had jumped back in surprise saying, ‘Oh what is it?’. ‘Hassems’ good turn was now revealed for what it was to myself and ‘Florry’. As he started to convince ‘Gorey’ that the reason the trout were so big in Lough Buai was their diet of monster frogs they lived on and here was the proof of it now, as the big frog was swallowed and spat out again by the big trout. The discussion about the Lough Buai frogs and trout and The Butter Stone continued on the road to town, into ‘The Commercial’ where all the patrons were made aware of the days adventures. particularly by ‘Hassem’. But, as ‘Gorey’ with a wink said to myself and ‘Florry’, ‘I knew ‘Hassem’ was up to some trick but it was worth it to let him carry that heavy basket back to the car!’ As a foot note to the story I caught a trout up in Caha Lakes and as I was playing him out I could see what appeared to be two legs growing out of his head. When I landed him I discovered that a dead frog was jammed in his throat with its legs swinging loose out of his mouth, yet he still took a fly. I though of the lads, the three of them now passed on to another life where I hope their sense of fun is as appreciated as much as it was in this one.

Kenmare businessman has designs on your business

Despite all the current doom and gloom of the economic downturn a new Graphic Design Studio opens its doors in Kenmare. Doc Designs has recently been established, and launched a new website www.docdesigns.ie.

Following a recent downturn in the design industry Doc Designs owner and operator David O’Callaghan decided it was time to take a chance and go it alone. Cork native David qualified from Limerick School of Art and Design, and later from University of Limerick, has been working in the Design industry in Dublin, Limerick, Cork, and Tralee. Having worked with some of Ireland largest design, elearning and advertising companies, he brings a fresh and energetic approach to this new company. Having working in the design industry for the past 10 years, he believes the industry is leading towards a freelance market. Small design studio’s and freelance designers, now offer a greater incentive, than a larger design office. “In this challenging economic climate, marketing budgets are almost non existent; people have less money to spend on marketing and promotion. The little budget that people do have, needs to go a lot further than it did a year ago. A small studio like Doc Designs can spend more time and effort with each and every client, offering higher quality, and more effective design results, at a much lower cost.”

“Currently a lot of our day to day work involves retro fitting, adding to websites, new banners, and new additions to marketing materials, rather than whole new campaigns and websites. We can offer great value in this area, a professional and fast turn around but also a range of different solutions, idea’s and new avenues or alternatives to your existing needs.” Doc Designs offers a very wide range of services to everyone, not just businesses or shops, but to individuals, clubs, organisations, events, start-up’s etc. Services range from very simple posters, flyers, tickets, to full corporate identity, business cards, signage, web design, marketing, brochures, and advertising. No job is too small or too big. For a design quote or to discuss your design needs contact David at [email protected] or call on 087 2058 448.

Know Your Rights Question

I’ve lost my job and have been struggling to keep up with my rent since. What help can I get?

Kenmare News

Youth Affairs with Tom O’Sullivan

Answer Rent Supplement is a payment for people living in private rented accommodation who cannot afford to pay the full rent themselves. In general, if your only income is a social welfare or Health Service Executive (HSE) payment, you will qualify for a Rent Supplement. However, if you or your partner is in full-time employment (30 hours or more a week) you do not qualify for this payment. You may be eligible for Rent Supplement if the accommodation is suitable for your needs, the rent is below the maximum rent level set for your county and you are: • Assessed in the last 12 months by a local authority as being eligible for and in need of social housing or • Living in accommodation for homeless people for 6 months (183 days) out of the last 12 months or • A tenant of accommodation provided under one of the Social Housing Schemes or • Living in private rented accommodation for 6 months (183 days) out of the last 12 months You apply to the Community Welfare Officer (CWO) at your local health centre. The CWO decides if you are eligible for Rent Supplement and calculates the amount you will get. This is worked out to ensure that your weekly income after paying rent does not fall below the Supplementary Welfare Allowance rate (currently €196.00 for people over 25) minus €24. This is because you must pay a contribution of at least €24 towards your rent. You may pay more than €24 because you are also required to contribute any additional assessable means that you have above the Supplementary Welfare Allowance rate towards your rent. If you are in difficulty with rent arrears a new website from the Citizens Information Board and the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS), keepingyourhome.ie, provides comprehensive information on the services and entitlements available. This column has been compiled by Kenmare Citizens Information Centre, Adult Education Centre, Bell Height, Kenmare. Telephone No: 064 6641000. The centre provides a free and confidential advice & information service to the public and is open Mon., Tues., and Wed., 10:00 am to 4:15 pm; Thurs. and Fri., 10:00 am to 1:30 pm. Citizens Information is also available online at www.citizensinformation.ie and from the Citizens Information Call Centre - 1890 777 121 (open Mon. to Fri., 9am to 9pm).

Easter Egg Hunt an eggcellent day out!

Locals and visitors alike turned out in force for the Kenmare annual Easter Egg Hunt held in Reenagross park and despite the bracing weather it was wonderful to see such a great turnout and a fun filled day was had by all The Pet Corner at the bat cave was very popular with a variety of animals which the children really enjoyed so thanks to Sean O’Connor and Henk Offerins for that. A total of €771 was raised and will be donated to the Bee for Battens charity Our thanks to all who helped out on the day and to Hallisseys Cash and Carry, Lorge Handmade Chocolate and Whytes Centra for their generosity On another note The Christmas Concert held in Holy Cross Church this December, which was a wonderful evening and greatly enjoyed by all, raised €473 for Kenmare Hospital

Monday night clean up fosters community spirit The Monday night clean up began again in March, with volunteers meeting in The Square at 7pm. The first job this year was pruning, sweeping and cleaning at the front of The Heritage Centre so that everything looks well for the 2010 tourist season. Four regular volunteers turned up. It had been a wet day, but the team work and the chatter lifted our spirits and had us going home happy. Volunteer Jobs for upcoming Monday night clean-ups during April and May include... Creamery Car Park; pruning and flower beds Painting; street furniture, poles and signs Cleaning; litter in the park and riverside Weeding; approach roads and park We are looking for volunteers to suggest small areas for which they could take responsibility. Big headaches to be sorted included the unsightly hoarding at top of Henry Street and the unsightliness of the junction at the entrance to the town, outside The Landsdowne. The Rinn na gCros clean up. Good Friday at noon eleven volunteers turned out for the annual roundup of rubbish in the wildlife park. In two hours we had filled the trailer of debris from the tide and littering over the Winter months. It was good to see that the park did not look too bad, this

Mark Daly welcomes Schools funding

Senator Mark Daly is delighted to welcome the announcement of funding for the following schools under the Summer Works Programme; Kenmare Boys National School and Kenmare Convent (external environment works), Lauragh National School (windows) and Kilgarvan Central School (external environment works). The works concerned, as well as being of great benefit to the schools, will create much needed employment in the locality. IN addition Mark told The Kenmare News that, "In light of the difficulties experienced parking at the Carnegie Arts Centre, I have asked Kerry County Council to provide for two disabled parking spaces at the centre after 6pm in the evenings. The signage for these parking spaces will be erected this week."

is due in no small measure to the ongoing weekly clean-up done by our Special Needs Group, The St. John of God’s group associated with The Adult Education Centre. The work off this group is a huge contribution in the upkeep of Rinn na gCros. Feedback. The March clean up received grateful thanks from Mary O’Sullivan on behalf of the staff in the Tourist Office.

Spring heralds new beginnings at Kenmare Adult Education Centre

Nothing is so beautiful as spring..... As April is the official herald of spring, we at Kenmare Adult Education Centre celebrate the sunshine and longer days with cheer and needless to say more courses. The last few months have been busy with lots of new courses beginning. In fact several courses are being repeated due to popular demand, so if you missed out last time, here’s your chance. Our Horticulture courses have been as popular as ever, whilst we all know we are in frugal times, with the credit crunch helping to stir interest, the main reason that people want to learn to grow their own, is to improve their quality of life and that of their families. Our Polytunnel course, which is shortly to be repeated, has been endeavouring to build as many Polytunnel’s as the students demand, there’s a ‘Meitheal’ every Saturday. Just in case you are not aware, Polytunnel’s are a great (relatively) low cost way of improving productivity by many reasons to name but a few; extending the growing season and allowing the growth of vegetables and fruits that will not normally grow in our Irish climate. So get on the band wagon and sign up now. Don’t forget once you have got that Polytunnel up, we have plenty of courses to guide you through organic growing, before you know it, you will be producing all your own fruit and vegetables.

overseas to study for a BSc Honours in Horticulture with Plantmanship at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Good Luck Theo. Last, but certainly not least our own talented art tutor Joy Elizabeth Mitchell has an exhibition of her celebrated works named ‘Essence of Ireland’ showing at Reuben’s Art Space in Tralee commencing 30th April and continuing for a month. It’s also that time of year again, when we begin to think how we are going to keep our dearest children occupied and entertained over their long summer holidays. Well never fear as, very shortly, we will be producing our budget friendly summer-schools prospectus for them to choose from. Every year we have courses that are indeed entertaining and fun, whereby they can pick up new skills which will surely inspire their creative little minds. Watch this space.

Our latest courses are... Children’s Pottery- 5 week course commencing 28th April Silk Painting - 29th April Edible garden anywhere - 29th April Polytunnel - Date to be advised Various I.T Courses If there’s something you’re interested in, just come in and see what we can do!

Kenmare AEC is delighted to announce the following success stories. The Art Department is proud and delighted to make known that one of their previous students, Helen Greenfield, has been accepted at Crawford Art College where she will be completing a Diploma of Fine Art. We wish her every success in her endeavours. With equal pride and delight, Anne Holden, Mary Madison, Maureen Broughton and Siobhan Duggan have been accepted to exhibit their paintings and photographs at Mill Cove Gallery, Castletownbeare’ in May. Long may their success continue. Also one of our horticulture students, Theo Hardwick, is travelling

Kenmare Tidy Towns Update At the recent AGM the following officers were elected; Chairperson Michael O'Connor Scarteen, Secretary Ann Barrett and Treasurer Steve Rowe. After being reduced by two points last year the committee are asking for everyone to make an extra effort in the coming year. We are asking all business people to keep their premises in good condition as a few premises have already being identified by Kerry County Council as problem areas. Signage. Every year the amount of posters and signs on our shop windows and telegraph poles have been noted negatively. We are asking all local groups to avoid littering with posters, an official notice board is erected in the square so drop your posters into the Chamber of Commerce and avoid cluttering of signs. Reduce Reuse Recycle notice board is also in the square. Since last year many items including bed, furniture, filing cabinets and shower doors have found new homes. So if you have any items which may be of no use to you but may be useful for someone else, just write down your item with a telephone number and drop it into the Chamber of Commerce office at the courthouse. Good Friday Clean Up. Thanks to everyone who participated in the Good Friday Clean Up of Rinn na Gross. A great couple of hours work was undertaken and the place is looking very well. Cllr Patrick ConnorScarteen’s report

Industrial action, Work to Rule. Currently Council staff and staff of Government Departments and are taking a form of Industrial Action called work to rule, in protest against Government cuts to their wages, work to rule includes not dealing with Councillors representations regardless of their political affiliation. Many staff would prefer not to be taking this form of action which is organised by their unions, and many along with Councillors hope it will end shortly. It is frustrating for Councillors trying to get work done for constituents however unfortunately the greatest impact is on the general public. Roads 2010. The roads funding received by the Council is significantly reduced this is unfortunate especially in light of the damage caused to the roads since Christmas. In 2007 Kerry Co Council received funding for pavement improvement, realignment and totalling €10,989,000. This has been reduced to €2,800,000. In 2010 only 12 roads throughout the County will be tarred under the Local Improvement Schemes down from 48 last year. However under a different roads allocation I am glad that the following motion I had before the November 2009 Council meeting was successful “That we, the members of Kerry County Council, urgently request the Department of Transport and the National Roads Authority to allocate substantial funding in 2010 for road improvements on the ring of Kerry Road (N 70) between Blackwater Bridge and Sneem, and the (R569) between Kenmare and Loo Bridge, such additional funding is badly needed as sections of the roads are in a deplorable state.” The funding received by the Council from the National Roads Authority for these two roads is Blackwater Bridge to Sneem €750,000. and Loo Bridge to Kenmare €750,000. Also at a special roads meeting recently Mr Charlie O’Sullivan Director of Transportation informed Councillors that the Council will be spending the following on the roads in the Kenmare area Footpaths. The following will be spent on footpaths: Feorus, Tuosist €149,000. Dromnevane, Kenmare €54,000. Fussa, Kilgarvan €256,000. Dromcahan, Kenmare €48,750. Eastern relief road, Kenmare €250,000. Dromacoosh, Kilgarvan €48,750. Morley’s Bridge, Kilgarvan €136,000. Direenmacken, Tahilla €15,925. Railway Road, Kenmare €79,454. Clontoo, Kilgarvan €43,000. Letter, Kilgarvan €68,000. Dromnevane €40,000, Kenmare town €15,000, Kilgarvan Village €15,000. Hedge cutting. €30,000 has been made available for cutting hedges at dangerous junctions throughout the County, under current policy the onus is still on the landowner to cut the Hedges, the Council are examining ways to change or improve existing policy. I will continue to make representations for local roads and I will as always request the Council to fill the pot holes. Agriculture. REPS. I have raised the issue of the urgent need to approve for

Kenmare News

payment over 400 REPS 3 and REPS 4 files in Kerry with the FG Agricultural Spokesperson Michael Creed TD he has raised the issue with the Minister in the Dail along with Deputy Tom Sheahan. The average payment is €8000 and many farmers need this income to survive. I hope that the pressure is kept up so that the Killarney office will have a District Superintendent reinstated so that applications for payment can be signed off on as Kerry Farmers are heavily dependant on REPS. All Ireland Schools Football Win. Well done to the Pobail Scoile Inbhear Sceine Senior Football team on their win in the All Ireland Final, it was very enjoyable to watch and they put on a great display of football at Cusack Park, Ennis. Kerry Education Service Harold Project. Thanks to all those who participated and assisted us with the Charity walk in aid of funding for the Kerry Education Service. The walk around the two mile bridge was enjoyed by all. Jack n’ Jill run up the Hill 24th April. Best of luck to all involved in the charity walk/run. It is always exceptionally well organised by John O’Sullivan PO and volunteers, and it generates funding for a worthy Children’s charity which provides respite and support for children with neurological development issues and their families. It also attracts many people to the town ever year providing a welcome boost to Tourism and Business. I look forward to completing the course in a quicker time this year. Battens Events. Many events have been organised locally to raise funding for battens disease research, please keep an eye out for local posters or to volunteer or find out more check out www.beesforbattens.org Cancer Charity Night. An enjoyable night was had by all at the fundraiser for Cancer at the Lansdowne Hotel recently, thanks to those who bided to experience my culinary skills and hard luck to Jackie Tuohy who was outbidded! However I look forward to cooking for and entertaining the three ladies who were the successful bidders, hopefully the weather will improve so that we can have a BBQ. Fine Gael District AGM. The Kenmare Fine Gael District Executive AGM took place on 29thMarch last. Deputy Tom Sheahan TD and I addressed the meeting. Apologies were given by Sean Kelly MEP, Senator Paul Coghlan and Cllr PJ Donovan the following officers were elected for 2010; Chairperson Jer Lyne, Secretary Teddy O’Sullivan Casey, Vice Chairman James O’Farrell, Treasurers Johnny Finnegan and Eileen O’Sullivan. A large number of people attended and many local and national issues were raised and discussed. The Branch AGMs for Sneem/Blackwater, Kenmare and Tuosist took place on Sunday 18th April. The AGM for Kilgarvan will also be held shortly. Branch AGMs. Councillors Patrick Connor-Scarteen and PJ Donovan, Tom Sheahan TD and Senator Paul Coughlan will attend the AGMs which take place as follows on Sunday 25th April: Sneem/Tahilla/Blackwater 4pm O'Sheas Bar, Sneem Kenmare/Templenoe/Bonane 6pm Atlantic Bar, Kenmare Tuosist/Lauragh 8pm Lake House, Tuosist Kilgarvan To be held shortly Kenmare District Fine Gael Buffet and Dance will take place on Friday 23rd April at 8.30pm at the Kenmare Bay Hotel. Sneem/ Kenmare Ladi es .

The Ladies were unlucky to lose to Dr. Crokes in Templenoe last week in the final round of the Division 2 League. Sneem/Kenmare should have won this encounter as they were on top of their opposition for the majority of the

game. Dr. Crokes were a constant threat on the attack and their tally of 16 points was enough to overcome Sneem/Kenmare’s 3-5 scoreline in the final ten. This defeat put Sneem/Kenmare into a quarter-final play-off against Intermediate side Na Gaeil on Sunday last. This turned out to be a very exciting encounter with Sneem/Kenmare holding out in a high pressure finish to win 2-13 to 4-8. Both sides attacked with pace from the outset and swapped scores in the opening minutes. Na Gaeil soon found gaps in the Sneem/Kenmare defence and hit the back of the net twice. Caroline Taylor answered back with a goal of her own after she booted a well-taken high ball past the Na Gaeil keeper. The ladies trailed 2-5 to 1-4 going into the second half, but not for long as Laura O’Sullivan got the team’s second goal from a free kick. Two more crucial goals from Sneem/Kenmare came midway dur-

ing the half thanks to Lisa O’Shea & Claire O’Sullivan. This advantage was soon diminished however as Na Gaeil crept back into the game in the final ten minutes. A determined Sneem/Kenmare defence prevented an onslaught of Na Gaeil chances. Caroline O’Sullivan, Karina O’Connor and Geraldine Cahalane were influential in stopping Na Gaeil on their tracks, while Gina Crowley was superb in stopping Kerry team-mate Louise Ni Mhuirheartaigh. Na Gaeil wasted an equaliser opportunity in the final play of the game as Sneem/Kenmare held on to win by a point. Sneem/Kenmare scores: Caroline Taylor (1-0), Claire O’Sullivan (1-4), Lisa O’Shea (1-2), Christina Foley (0-1), Nuala Croinin (01), Laura O’Sullivan (1-0).The ladies will now face Dr. Crokes in the league semi-final this week. Matron of Kenmare Hospital. I want to compliment in the most special way the Matron of Kenmare Hospital Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald who is retiring from her post this week. She has given a lifetime of excellent service and has run our hospital, in conjunction with the excellent staff, in an exemplary fashion. During the years there were many crisis with financial constraints but she never let that effect the extremely high level of excellent care that has been provided to the patients of the hospital.Every family that has had dealings with Kenmare Hospital over the years has nothing but the highest praise for it. I wish her and her husband Stephen many long and happy years of good health and she certainly deserves a rest from what could sometimes be quite a stressful position. I want to wish the new incoming Matron every good luck and success in her new post. She is of course coming to the job as a highly experienced and capable individual who will take the new role of Matron in her stride. Roadworks. I am glad that over the coming weeks a number of our large road works projects will be commencing and over the coming months great improvements will be made on a number of our main roads coming into Kenmare town. Mini Roundabout at the top of the town. I am ensuring that remedial works will be carried out at this location to ensure that the temporary barriers that have been placed here will be replaced by more suitable looking products which will enhance the appearance of the entrance to the town. Pobal Scoil Inbhear Sceine. I want to congratulate the Pobal Scoil Inbhear Sceine team who recently won the All Ireland Final which was held in Ennis. I want to pay a special compliment to Teddy Doyle and all of the team who did all of us proud with their great achievement. To Tom O’Connor and Colm Horgan who put a lot of time and effort into training the team and also of course the Principal Dermot Healy and all the teachers and parents who put so much effort into ensuring such a success for the school. Chamber of Commerce. I have always worked very closely with the Chamber of Commerce in Kenmare for the betterment of Kenmare and the businesses that operate in the town. The

promotion of Kenmare and having a successful, vibrant business community should obviously always be the main aim of any Chamber of Commerce. I was therefore very disappointed recently when, an undated and unsigned letter on Chamber headed paper, was circulated concerning the Western Relief Road. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce held on the 1st April Mr. Sean Daly stated that he circulated the letter. It is my considered opinion that the contents of the letter were very disappointing in that it did not relay the actual facts of my involvement in resisting a proposed Western Relief Road for Kenmare. Much was made in the letter of the fact that it was wasteful to put €300,000 into this road considering nobody wanted it. What the letter omitted to state was the fact that my father had written confirmation from Minister Dempsey stating that the funding was withdrawn, at my father’s request, as it was actually given in error because my father had secured that funding for the Eastern Relief Road which is the road everybody wanted. I want to thank in a very special way the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Mr. Donald Lynch for the courteous and efficient way that he dealt with the issue on the night. Mr. Daly stated at the end of the meeting that he would review the situation and that he would have no problem in issuing an apology for the letter if he saw fit to do so. It would be most disappointing if the Kenmare Chamber of Commerce was to ever be used in the future by anyone as a mechanism in a politically motivated or biased way. I am glad that the Chairperson has assured me that he will always endeavour to ensure that this will never happen and I obviously very much welcome that assurance. I also readily recognise the massive personal contribution that Mr. Sean Daly has made to the betterment of Kenmare town and its environs over many, many years and the endless hours of

community based work which he has undertaken. I hope that this matter can be cleared up as soon as possible as it is in everybody’s interest to do so. Kenmare’s new Community Hospital. I am glad that, as promised, good progress is being made and that in recent days site exploration works have been undertaken on the site of the hospital. This is in order to facilitate the finalising of the tender documents which will be sent out to contractors who will be giving their prices for the job. Fair Deal – Care for the elderly. As a member of the HSE it has come to my attention that there is an awful lot of mis-understanding with regard to the new Fair Deal system of dealing with elderly people who wish to reside in nursing homes. It should be pointed out from the beginning that when a person presents to be assessed for the Fair Deal system their income, their property holdings etc. are looked at and a fair and reckonable figure is arrived at as to how much they should contribute towards their medical care. Whether that care is given to them in Kenmare, Killarney, Tralee or Listowel it will actually be the same price per week. It has come to my attention that many of our local people are leaving our area and receiving their long term care in areas far away from home whereas they could have actually received the same care at the same cost in our own local area. We are extremely fortunate in our locality that we have an excellent local Community Hospital and of course excellent local nursing homes that have a record of care and diligence towards its patients that is second to none. I highlight this fact as these local nursing homes give very much needed local employment and it is only right and proper that they should be supported by being utilised by our own local aging population who need good solid care. I can be contacted at anytime to give further information with regard to the Fair Deal System but I would strongly advise people when looking for long term care to look at our own local nursing homes first before considering anywhere else.very proud of their great achievement.

In County Kerry there were 6 nominations from Kenmare. The nominations were as follows: Best Casual Dining – The Purple Heather Best Customer Care – Park Hotel Best Restaurant – Mulcahy’s, Packies and d’Arcy, Best Chef – Martin Hallissey Packies. This is a phenomenal achievement and unprecedented in a town this size. Munster Regional Irish Restaurant of the Year Award 2010 winner's are as follows and Kenmare won 4 of the 6 awards in Kerry! Purple Heather, Park Hotel and Packies for Best Restaurant and Best Chef. Congratulations to one and all for the hard work and dedication it took to reach this standard. This reiterates Kenmare as a Culinary Destination and we will all work together to continue to improve our standing and I was thrilled to be nominated only being in business since September. All County winners will now compete for the Regional and All Ireland Title which will be announced at the Irish Restaurant Awards in June 2010. www.irishrestaurantawards.com Belated happy New Year to one and all, hope you had a good Christmas despite the very restrictful weather conditions. (I know you think I’m raving but I missed the last few editions). I’ll never complain about rain again. Thanks to all the staff parties and custom over the festive season. My total toning class finished in early December, well done to all the girls you worked very hard. Hope you are keeping up the good work for 2010. Unfortunately, I have to put the classes on hold for the moment. I look forward to recommencing in the future.

Whether you want to loose weight, get fit or are recuperating from an operation, I work with people in the pool, gym or in their home whatever suits you. Consultation is free with no obligation. The important thing for your well being is to include some form of exercise in your daily life. Any exercise is good so just do what appeals to you. Once reasonably fit take up cycling if you wish. A 150lb woman burns 355 calories per hour walking at 4 miles per hour versus 850 calories cycling at 13 miles an hour. Try and plan your meals ahead so you don’t end up eating on the run and snacking fast foods. Remember it takes 98 minutes of walking 4 miles an hour to burn off one Big Mac, so keep driving by! Exercise also helps your mental agility; it helps generate new brain cells, even in the aging brain. It improves learning through increased blood supply and growth hormones. As little as 2 hours a week of brisk walking has been shown to halt, and even reverse the brain shrinkage that starts in a person’s 40’s, especially in the regions responsible for memory and higher cognition. Exercise works as antidepressant by reducing stress and so it improves your mood. So exercise is the solution to all your problems, no pills required, just a pair of runners or comfortable walking shoes. Just a few more facts to encourage you to start/continue exercising in this glorious weather: Breast cancer research found that rigorous exercise can cut the cancer risk in the over-60s. Women of a postmenopausal age who regularly carry out strenuous exercise are 30% less likely to develop breast cancer. The charity tracked more than 32,000 women over 11 yrs. In addition to this finding it was revealed that frequent light exercise, even housework, cut the risk of the disease by the same 30%. Something to take from both studies is that the frequency of exercise is the key factor; whether strenuous or not, it has important health benefits. According to the Nurses Health Study, a brisk 20 mins

walk a day, 3-5 times a week will, reduce the risk of cancer recurring by 40%. This may be because exercise helps in weight loss, reducing the number of fat cells which produce oestrogen and certain breast cancers are fuelled by oestrogen. A U.K report by the National Osteoporosis Society revealed that almost half of young people are not looking after their bones and are not aware of any steps they could take to do so. Bone strength actually peaks in the 20s so it is vital to take relevant action before the age of 30. Over a third of people surveyed were not aware that exercise and diet reduces the risk of osteoporosis. Certain risk factors like drinking alcohol and smoking were also not identified by those surveyed. In February, blue skies, sunshine and snow. A gang of us, including 3 lads as young as 10yrs struck off for Mullaghinattin, which means Summit of the Gorse. No bother to the youths of course they scampered up the mountain like spring lamb and shared their inept information on poultry husbandry and entrepeneurship. We had a very educational exchange. The clarity was amazing; we were delighted with the snow. The frozen water hung like stalagmites, scenes not normally encountered. I was told this mountain is known as the Irish Matter horn so apt that there was snow there. It’s not a long or difficult climb, which makes it even sweeter to be rewarded with such wonderful views. We could see 360˚, the Cow, Bull and Calf and even over the Beara Peninsula to Bantry Bay, around to Glencar, Inch , the Reeks of course were covered in snow and just as we finished lunch the cloud cover lifted and they emerged majestically and as regal as ever. A careful descent merited some re-hydration in the Blackwater Tavern and a bit of chat. A fantastic few hours climbing, all at our door step and free of charge. With breathtaking views and fresh air and sunshine we were all rejuvenated. Good luck to all participating in the Jack and Jill on Saturday. Well done on all your hard work, it’s a great cause so you’re all winners. Keep up the training and go for the fun triathlon later on in the summer. It’s good for you and it’s a good cause.

Keep Health, Keep Alive.

ALL IRELAND VICTORY FOR POBALSCOIL INBHEAR SCÉINE KENMARE

Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine Kenmare captured the All Ireland C Colleges title on Saturday the 27th of March with a superb victory over Mayo rivals Gortnor Abbey from Crossmolina on a score line of 0-12 to 1-6. The game was played in Cusack Park Ennis before a large crowd of very vocal Kenmare supporters in blustery conditions. Inbhear Scéine took the game to Gortnor Abbey right from the start and opened up a 0-9 to 0-4 gap at half time with points from Shane and James Duncan, Alan O'Leary and Kevin O'Sullivan. The Mayo team came back stronger in the second half but great defending by the Kenmare lads denied them the vital scores but with six minutes left in the game the Mayo lads sneaked in for a goal completely against the run of play to leave two points between the teams. However Inbhear Scéine with great team play again upped their game and worked the ball up the field and a great point by team captain Teddy Doyle gave Kenmare a three point lead with three minutes remaining. The Mayo lads threw everything at Kenmare in those remaining minutes and

a late dangerous free into the Kenmare square was well defended and cleared by a very competent and well organised Kenmare back line. Scenes of great joy greeted the final whistle with a very large number of Kenmare supporters descending on Cusack Park to congratulate the Kenmare players and mentors. This was a tremendous team display from the Inbhear Scéine team with no subs being introduced and no positional changes being made in the course of the game. The team arrived back in Kenmare amid scenes of celebrations with bonfires blazing from Morley's bridge to the square in Kenmare where a huge and vocal crowd had gathered to greet their heroes. The team was addressed from the back of a flag bedecked Lorry by school principal Dermot Healy and team trainer Tom O' Connor. Mr. Healy spoke of his delight and pride in his school winning their first ever All Ireland football title and thanked the team and mentors for this great victory. Tom O'Connor thanked the team and subs who had put in a huge effort in training since last September, he also thanked physical trainer Colm Horgan for his tremendous contribution to the team and also the team physio Christine Foley. Team captain Teddy

Doyle spoke of the great dedication of the team and introduced the thirty members of the panel to the crowd. In the path to the final Inbhear Scéine had beaten Blarney of Cork and St. Augustine’s of Dungarvan in the earlier rounds. They beat Rosscarbery of Cork by a point after extra time in the Munster Quarter Final and Rochestown of Cork by six points in the Semi Final. They then faced Newcastlewest of Limerick in the Munster Final in Castleisland and after a tough hard hitting game emerged as Munster Champions by a point, they then met Killcullen of Kildare and after a very exciting Semi Final game played in Cashel emerged victorious to qualify for the All Ireland Final.

Kenmare Green Notes

Hope you are all out in the garden taking advantage of the beautiful weather of the last few days. Biodiversity Ireland are looking for people to join in their Butterfly survey for this year. It requires taking a walk each week and recording the butterflies you see. We have 33 native species of Butterfly and in general butterflies are moving north with the onset of Climate Change so Biodiversity Ireland want to see if any new species have appeared. If you register on their website they will send you all the details. www.biodiversityireland.ie Green Party This year’s conference was held in Waterford and was attended by three members of the constituency group. We put forward a motion suggesting that a new model of banking be adopted in this country where the shareholders would have a much bigger say in the running of the bank and that the bank would be a more local based institution working for the members. This model is used by Credit Agricole in France and by Rabobank based in the Netherlands This motion was the last to be decided on Sunday and was passed unanimously. There were very interesting workshops and updates from Ministers. Eamon Ryan gave a very interesting update on the progress of the European Super grid which will benefit Ireland hugely as we a re in a position to become an energy exporter of alternative fuels – all those waves and wind are useful for something! Green School The day of Judgement for our Green Flag is fast approaching but we are well prepared. We will be taking part in the National Spring Clean on Friday April 23rd in conjunction with the Kenmare Tidy Town Group (weather permitting) We will be cleaning up a designated litter blackspot and would appreciate any help. Sisters are doing it for themselves! A new initiative recently set up in the area is Mediterranean Cooking Nights. Portuguese Cook, Susana and Holistic Therapist Anne host cookery demonstrations on the last Friday of each month in their spacious and stylish kitchen in Gearhadiveen. “We both love good food based on easily sourced fresh ingredients that can be exquisite when prepared with a bit of skill that anyone can master.” Anne and Susana first met at Nom-Nom Café, Faungorth at one of their monthly clothes swop social evenings. Coming from northern Portugal, with fish on her doorstep, lemon and orange and olive groves Susana was born to a tradition of good home cooking. She takes simple ingredients like chicken, rice and vegetables and just adding nothing but lemons, olive oil and garlic, but using them in ways that we would not be used to, she creates a sumptuous main course. Word of mouth is filling the dinner nights. “We have repeat custom, bringing new friends. We have been asked if we would do a men only group, which indeed we will. A two course dinner is demonstrated and served with a glass a wine and around the table the fun and sharing goes on, friendships blossom. It is a great night out. Those interested in courses can contact us now. There are courses geared specially for mothers and children and for health food cooking. The whole idea is to let people enjoy good food and to see that it can be easy. Plus you leave with a little more knowledge of good nutrition.” Even though Susana may demonstrate how to make the bestever chocolate mousse, this is about as far away from junk food as you can get. You will find that when you eat well, weight problems and food cravings are just not an issue any more. To find out more or book your place phone 086 8094049 / 064 6679775

Kenmare & Locality Animal Welfare Society Spring has arrived and we are thrilled to see some good weather especially for all the lambs that are sprinkled around the surrounding fields. Long may it last Many thanks to all the staff and customers of O'Murchu's bar who had a collection for KLAWS and raised €200, we really appreciate your generosity, donations such as this really help us continue our work particularly on spaying/neutering and also treating sick animals that pass through our doors The average stray cat that arrives to us fit and well will cost a minimum of €100. This covers innoculations, neutering, worming and feeding whilst in our care, of course most will cost much more as they may be with us longer or present with cat flu and therefore need medication. Cost of dogs arriving in will generally be substancially higher, therefore any donation is gratefully received and enables us to help these animals With holiday time arriving please ensure that your animals are well looked after if you head away on holiday plus please ensure your pet has an I.D. collar with your telephone number to assist their safe return if the wander off or get lost Please be sure to innoculate your animal EVERY YEAR, we are seeing increased number of cat arriving suffering from serious flu, this is a killer in cats. Also Parvo in dogs is generally lethal.

April Gardening With Simon Linell Willowfield Garden Centre Sneem Road, Kenmare Phone 087 2953990 [email protected] Schools Gardening website www.raringtogrow.com At last we have had a change in the weather. Even though the days have been bright and sunny over the last few weeks there is still a chill in the wind and night temperatures have been dropping giving slight frosts. So it is still not summer but we will take any dry sunny day whatever way it comes. Just be careful at least until the middle of May that if you are planting out summer bedding plants and Geraniums that you protect them at night if it looks as though there might be a frost. It is easy enough to bring hanging baskets and window boxes inside for the night but more permanent plantings in the ground or large barrels should be covered by a sheet of plastic or an old coat for the clear starry nights when frost looks likely. April is certainly a busy month in the garden and at last there is a bit of growth after the long cold winter. Some shrubs that we thought would recover from the freeze are definitely going backwards and are due to be dug up and dumped but there is life coming back to others. So as we have mentioned before the full extent of the winter damage will not become fully evident until May. The lawn has tried to make a comeback with the Lawn feed certainly making an impact but now growth has slowed again due to the dry spell and cold nights..you can’t win ! At least there are no midges at the moment ! LAWNS... Try and get the lawn trimmed down as low as possible during this dry spell so as to even out the clumps of winter grass and help remove some of the winter build up of moss and to give the grass a short neat appearance. Lawn /weed/feed/moss killer can still be applied during the month. FRUIT GARDEN.... Now is a good time to plant up some Apple/Pear/Cherry and Plum trees as well as some soft fruit bushes. For good pollination at least two or three different varieties of Apple are required but trees in your neighbour’s garden will be able to assist in the pollination if space is limited. Also in small gardens, trees can be trained in an espalier fashion right up against a south facing wall or fence. Gooseberry and Currants can be used in a purpose built fruit cage or used amongst shrubs in the garden. Beware of using Raspberries like this as they can be fairly invasive at the detriment to other shrubs. An interesting fruit to grow is a Kiwi fruit which is a vigorous climber that can be trained along a south or west facing wall. This will produce a quantity of fruit as well as providing an interesting cover for a wall. Strawberry plants should be planted up as soon as possible so that they can produce a good root system before the plants begin to flower in a few weeks time. These can be planted in the ground, pot or even a hanging basket. VEGE GARDEN.....During the last few weeks the vege garden should have been dug over and the main planting season is under way . Potatoes can still be planted up until early May at the latest. The shoots of the potatoes will be damaged by the frost but will be OK if you continue to earth them up. This small covering of soil will protect the shoots.Sowings of onion, beetroot, turnip, carrot, parsnip can all be done even though it is still cold at nights. Peas and Beans should be started off in small containers on a kitchen window sil or tunnel just to give them an early boost. Direct sowings into the ground can be carried out in May. Lettuce seed should also be started under protection at this time of year. Cabbage and broccoli seed can be sown in seed beds to produce transplant material for later on in the summer. Young vegetable plants are available now in the Garden Centre if you wish to skip the seed sowing stage. HERBS... start planting up herbs into patio containers and window boxes over the next few weeks or maybe mix up some herbs with a selection of flowering plants to create an interesting effect. Seed can be sown throughout the spring and early summer. TREES and SHRUBS....There is an increasing range of interesting trees and shrubs around at this time of the year and if you have started filling in the gaps where shrubs have died during the winter, think about using Forsythia, Magnolia, Kerria, Pieris, Viburmun or Aucuba and Photinia red robin to produce colour in flowers and leaves at this time of the year. And as for trees, look no further than the Amalanchier or the bright cherry blosoms in shades of white and pink to provide spring colour. In Herbaceous and perennial plants , the Euphorbias and Hellebores have been putting on a display for over a month now and will continue for several more weeks. PATIO CONTAINERS...The threat of late spring frosts will not be over until the first week of May, so if you intend planting up any summer containers over the next couple of months be prepared to move them inside when necessary or cover the container to prevent frost damage. Over the coming weeks the range of patio plants will increase but there are plenty of items to choose from at the moment to add early colour to your containers. The Pansy and Viola can put up with all the mixed weather we have exoperienced and will flower away madly from now through to the summer. If you have a glasshouse or polytunnel you can start planting up your window boxes and hanging baskets right away with trailing petunia..etc and let them grow on for a couple of weeks under protection when hopefully summer will be here. If you are interested in getting your baskets and containers planted for you, just drop them out to the Garden Centre and we will do the job and keep them for a couple of weeks to get established. ALPINES....a wide range of alpines flower in the spring period and if you are planning a rockery somewhere in your garden take a look at the plants that are in flower at the moment to help provide inspiration. Trim back plants immediately after flowering to maintain a compact growth. So, until next month when hopefully it will be warm as well as sunny and Munster will be one step closer to the Heineken Cup, Happy Gardening ! Simon

Kestrels end season on a high!

Another successful basketball season ends for the Kestrels with three of our teams topping their divisions. PJ Reidy’s Senior Men have been impressive and consistent in their league performances and secured promotion to Division 2 with a well earned home victory over St. Joseph’s winning 82 to 49. Led by over 30 points from Mike Hussey, (86 points in his last 3 games), Kenmare never trailed in The U16 girls team who won their Division this encounter. The win followed successive victories over victory ensured the Ladies remain in Division 2 next season. Glenbeigh and a hard-earned victory over St. Mary’s. Kenmare RFC U11's Outclass Shandon RFC The Kenmare RFC U11's did themselves proud when they played Shandon RFC in Thomond Park recently. The two clubs did battle at half time of the Munster V's Glasgow Warriors Magners League match in front of a massive twenty thousand strong packed stadium. The team talk from their coaches Paul Treyvaud, Gary Burke, Paul Bevan and Peter McCarthy seemed to work as the twelve young players walked out like men captained by Sneem's David Murphy. Shandon RFC had the ball in Kenmare's half for all of twenty seconds in the seven minutes that was played and Kenmare inflicted constant pressure for the rest. With outstanding performances from the whole twelve strong team, but in particular David Murphy and Ian O'Connor, it was inevitable that the Kenmare team would have their oppurtunity to score. With great protection of the ball from the Forwards, Murphy managed to charge through the Shandon tackles and break free with a surging run to stun all the spectators. With a thirty yard dash to the try line, it appeared that the young Sneem man had done the impossible and given his team mates a rare win in Thomond park for a mini rugby team, but alas, with only inches to go to ground the ball, a Shandon forward managed to get his hand in and scutter the ball free. The referee had to overturn his initial decision of what looked to be a perfect try but it didn't stop the 20,000 strong fans cheer on the Kenmare U11's to what turned out to be a moral victory in the end. As the team left the pitch with their heads held high and their coaches so proud of their performance and what their young men had achieved, you could hear the crowd chant out the Kenmare RFC name to raptuous applause. Truely a magnificent sporting occasion for a club that is only in existance for one year and the U11's remain unbeaten for their first season. The official West Munster Rugby season has now come to an end with the U13 team bowing out to Tralee in the semi final of the West Munster Cup. Even though they lost this game the standard of play has grown enormously throughout the year and all looks very promising for next season. The U11 team had a great day out in Thomond Park during April and were able to experience what it is like playing in front of over 20,000 people. There was a huge Kenmare following at the game who all shared in this remarkable experience. Well done to all those involved for making the event so enjoyable....and to relive it all, there will be a DVD coming out soon with the highlights of this trip for everyone to experience again ! Even though the main season is over there is a Kenmare team entered in the community games with qualifying games taking place shortly. TAG rugby continues throughout the summer on the School Fields on Thursday at 8.00pm. All welcome. During the next few weeks the possibility of organising a senior team for next season will be investigated further with a meeting being held at Pobalscoil on Friday 30 th April at 7.00pm. All those interested in playing or assisting in training, could they attend this meeting or make their intentions known to Paul Walsh at P F Mc Carthys. Anyone over the age of 19 can take part. A senior Womens team is also being investigated. Anyone interested please contact Laura Meagher in the Kenmare Bay Leisure centre. With the first season of Kenmare Rugby Club coming to an end we can look back and see great progress has been made and the standard of play has improved fantastically over the season in all age groups. Many thanks to all the coaching staff, committee members, ordinary members, helpers and sponsors as well as all the players who have taken part in the games during this first season. Hopes are high for next season ! During the summer months more work will be carried out on The School Playing Fields so that by the beginning of next season we will have a better and enlarged playing surface to allow room for both the Rugby pitch and the Schools GAA pitch to be accommodated. Membership renewals are being taken for the coming season with forms available from PF McCarthys (087 6687803) and also at Willowfield Garden Centre (087 2953990) Further info available on the Clubs website, www.kenmarerugby.com or contact David Brown on (086 8035674)

Kenmare U11, Kerry Rugby Champions! Kenmares' U11 Rugby team beat all before them in the Kerry Community Games play offs that were held in Tralee on Sunday 18th April. This was an outstanding performance from the young team winning every game without conceding a single try. They now go on to represent Kerry in the Munster play offs. Congrats to all involved.

Football. Kenmare got off to a good start to 2010. First they won the Est Kerry League by beating Listry in the Division 2 final. Then in the opening round of the County League they played Glenbeigh away and won. Then in the first round of the junior championship they had a comfortable win over Fossa. Hopefully this is a good omen, as Kenmare over the past six years were beaten at this stage except for 2008 when they won over Lispole. Hurling. In hurling the situation is not so good. While there is some good talent coming on stage there is poor response to training. One game has been played in the South Kerry League which we lost by 2points. Internazionale FC Kenmare Alan O’Sullivan – Chairman, Charlie Vaughan – Secretary, Dennis O’Brien – Treasurer, John Holland - Youth Liaison Officer, Paul Cassidy – P.R.O Sunday April 10th Reserve Cup St Bernards 2 - 0 Inter Kenmare B Inter’s B’s went out of the Reserve Cup to St. Bernard’s of Abbeydorney in Tralee. This was a good game and Inter had chances, through Jason Taylor and Eoin Finnegan who had a goal disallowed, but St. Bernards got a crucial goal with 20 minutes to go and added to it as Inter chased the game. Inter travelled with a small squad due to a number of players having other commitments, and not having a full squad probably made the difference in this one. Saturday April 9th Castle Bar Cup Inter Kenmare 0-1 Killarney Celtic The top side in Kerry at the moment came to town on Saturday, with a formidable squad. Kerry player David Hayes was on the bench, which tells the strength in depth these top teams have. Inter gave Celtic a good fright on the night though. Celtic scored from their first attack – a free kick dropping in the box caused confusion and Steven Divane put away a free header. From this point on though, Inter really got stuck in. Donal Casey had one of his best games for Inter at the back, Connie Cremin and Michael O’Connor were very prominent, and Mike Hussey caused all sorts of trouble for the Celtic defence. In the second half, David Clifford (who came on as a sub) and Steven O’Shea linked up a number of times to create three or four chances. The equalising goal never came, but the side showed great fighting spirit. This type of performance would have resulted in three points against most teams. Saturday April 9th Kerry Cup U12 Inter Kenmare 4-1 Killorglin B Inter had a great win on Saturday against Killorglin. Befor this game, coaches Mark Granville and Hugh Gudgeon decided to use a new set of ‘long ball’ tactics for this game, and this paid off in style. Steven O’Sullivan was forst on the score sheet, after he was played through and banged the ball home from 12 yards. Steven then made a run down the left and sent in a dangerous cross that Cathal Granville finished to the roof of the net. Killorglin then took over the game, and hit the bar three times before halftime, and Inter were happy to get to half time. After the break though, Inter quickly made the game safe, with a neat finish from Jordan Whyte, and then Andrej Pratak rounded off a powerful performance with a side-footed finish to the top corner. Killorglin’s goal was from a penalty in the last minuted. As well as the four goalscorers, Mark Hickey, Brian O’Sullivan and ‘keeper Ray O’Shea were also very good for Inter on the day. Saturday 20th March U16 Girls League Inter Kenmare 2 – 0 Killarney Athletic Inter's under 16 girls won the Kerry District League on Saturday for the first time ever. This is a magnificent achievement as they have been trying to win this league for the last four years, and have finally gotten the better of Listowel in the league. This was a good game and Killarney Celtic really

tried hard but got no change out of Ger Cahalane and Michelle O’Connor at the back for Kenmare. The first half was scoreless, and with the wind in the second half at their backs, Inter ruled the second half. Rachel Hawker won a penalty that Claire O’Sullivan converted expertly, and Sarah Murphy put Siobhan Kennedy through for a second which she lobbed over the advancing ‘keeper. All the girls played well in this one, and are delighted with their league win. A special mention must go to Kim Kennedy who has coached this team since u12s and is a great advert for coaching. There is one game left in the league, which will see the team presented with their trophy at home in Kenmare. Look out for the dates and be sure to be there to see it. Sat 20th March U11 Boy’s Premier Iveragh 1-1 Inter Kenmare Inter won a thrilling cup game away to Cahirciveen on penalties on Saturday. This was a game played on astro turf which makes it hard for visiting teams to win here. Inter went one down, but Denis Cronin scored lovely curling shot into the top corner, bringing the game into extra time. This had coach Caroline Taylor tearing her hair out as this caused her to be late for a family christening (sorry Michelle and Pat) but there was little she could do about it. There were no goals in extra time, and the game went to penalties. Daniel Taylor showed no nerves and banged in the first penalty. Denis Cronin put the 2nd penalty into the top corner again. Dylan O’Connor, on his first game for Inter’s under 11s scored a super debut goal next. Cahirciveen missed, and |Chris O’Sullivan scored easily. Then Tom Looney the Inter keeper for the day made himself a hero with a super save to send Inter through. This helped the mood of the manager a bit, these players did not dare lose the shoot out! This was a great effort from Inter who were reduced to a squad of 11, and Dylan O’Connor and William Gudgeon who were promoted from the B squad for the day and took their chances well. Well done lads and best of luck in the next round. Sunday 21st March U11s play for Kerry Sunday saw a great day for Inter as no less than 6 under 11 players lined out for Kerry under 11 teams in a tournament against Clare. All of the boys did themselves proud and showed up well among the best players in Kerry. The all played 25 minutes, meaning each of them got a full half wearing the Kerry jersey. Daniel Taylor and Chris O’Sullivan played at full back, Fintan Davis was right-back also, Dara O’Siochriu was at centre-half, Tom O’Sullivan was up front and Denis Cronin who had a brilliant weekend all round was in midfield. Inter Kenmare are right up there with the best teams now at under 11s, and these players and their parents should be very proud of themselves. Sunday 21st March Division 1B Castlemaine Utd 4 - 2 Inter Kenmare Inter B’s lost on their last away league trip of the season to a very strong Castlemaine. Inter went one nil up when Paul Cassidy headed a free kick back across the box and Mattie Clifford finished a great move. Castlemaine equalised after a through ball just before half time, and went one up with a brilliant header after the half. Inter equalised with a Paul Cassidy header at the back post from an Eoin Finnegan corner, but lost two goals before the end. Inter had chances through Mark Granville at 3-2 and David Clifford at 4-2 but couldn’t score. Eoin Finnegan had a stonewall penalty turned down as well. Despite this, it has to be said that the better team won. Paul Cassidy gave a vintage performance in this game, Eoin Finnegan was very strong up front and Alan O’Sullivan was solid in goals. Special mention has to go to Kieran O’Shea and Mike O’Sullivan who both came on to make their senior debuts for the club and both showed up very well. Friday 19th March Coffee Morning a Great Success A coffee morning was held in the Coachmans on Friday the 19th, which was a great event. The proceeds will be used to make more coffee – this time in a new kitchen at Inter Kenmare’s clubhouse. Thanks to Kate Crowley-Holland, Kim Kennedy, Joanne Murphy and all the underage coaches and parents who helped on the day and put on a great morning as usual. Inter Player Brings All-Ireland Medal to Kenmare Gary Cassidy was a member of the Tralee IT side who won the All-Ireland Colleges B title recently. The Tralee side won their way through five qualifying rounds to meet Athlone IT in the final. After a tough game, played at the CIT in Cork, Tralee IT won 1-0, with Gary Cassidy receiving the man of the match award. There aren’t too many people in Kenmare with AllIreland soccer medals, and Gary deserves to be congratulated. Newest Member Congratulations from all at Inter go to Deirdre and Ian Miles on the birth of their baby boy, Matthew. Summer Soccer Schools The annual FAI Summer soccer school is coming to Kenmare again this year, and will be taking place on August 16th to 20th at Inter Kenmare’s pitches. This is a brilliant week for boys and girls of all ages. Places normally go fast for this, so be sure and go to www.summersoccerschools.ie
