Balanced Scorecard and Strategy Maps A Balanced Scorecard is typically based on four perspectives: finance, customers, processes and people (“Learning and growth”). These are derived from the strategy and are mutually reinforcing. For each perspective, we identify, describe and set together : • Short term goals, derived from the analysis of the company’s long-term business objectives • Leading indicators linked to goals, which collect the relevant information to monitor achievement • Key initiatives to be conducted in order to achieve the defined goals Strategy Maps add another perspective to the Balanced Scorecard, providing the missing link between strategy formulation and strategy execution. The Strategy Map facilitates the task of visualizing “how” these objectives are to be met, by identifying the path to take in order to achieve them. This path will pass through intermediate objectives which can be expressed not only in financial terms, but also in commercial, organizational or human resource terms. In turn, these intermediate objectives can only be achieved if certain initiatives are undertaken. The result is a cartography of all initiatives and all objectives required to execute the strategy.
