Topic: FINDING THE STYLE OF YOUR TREE/ CREATING AND REFINING A JIN – Jack Douthitt Date: April 10, 2013 Time: 7:00-9:00 P.M. Place: Brown County Senior Center 300 S. Adams Street Green Bay, WI. Jack Douthitt will be sharing his expertise in the art of creating a jin, and finding the elusive bonsai hidden within some volunteer trees. Jack is the author of THE ART OF LIVING SCULPTURE and past President of Bonsai Clubs International. He has been recognized as “one of America’s outstanding bonsai artists” by the National Bonsai Foundation. We will learn the techniques of creating deadwood (jin and shari). Using raw material, he will also show how to determine the “style” that best suits the tree we are working on.

BEGINNER BONSAI CLASSES Beginner bonsai classes, taught by Sandra Keller, will be held Thursdays, 7-9 p.m, in April. The following members have volunteered to assist with the classes: April 4 –Tina Chappell April 11- Ellen Mathu April 18- Milt Wirth April 25- James Gumtow SATURDAY WORKSHOP 8:00-10:30 Mary Scheld 10:30-1:00 John Thomas 1:00- 3:30 James Gumtow DEADWOOD Jin refers to a dead branch that is used to enhance the illusion of age in a bonsai tree. Shari refers to the use of the dead area of a trunk to produce a striking and dramatic look of age. These two highly prized techniques add a great value to the tree. Sinobu Nozaki says that “this kind of dead branch is regarded as sacred and is called Ikarijin (jin), or anchor of God, because it resembles in shape the arm of an anchor; a bonsai with an anchor God is highly prized. It seems to reveal to us the soul of the treeas well as the bones and sinew made visible through a life of hardship.” Shari is either a natural or created dead area of a trunk. Shari-ra is Sanskrit, meaning bones after the cremation of Buddha. Care must be taken that vital bark, necessary for sap transport, is not destroyed while using this technique. Since deadwood is so desireable, some people have been known to attach dead wood to their trees. Lime Sulphur is often used to paint the dead areas to preserve them and also to produce a bleaching effect. As time goes by, jins and sharis can turn green. This can be corrected by using diluted bleach, on a toothbrush, to restore the deadwood whiteness. Our library has many informative articles on deadwood. ANNUAL AUCTION

News From the President BABS members: 50 degrees is just around the corner. Get ready for the busy spring bonsai season. If you were at last months meeting you had a great opportunity to purchase discounted tools from the "Tool Guy". I picked up 3 new much needed items. We also were able to watch a great video on grove/ forest planting. Some of us got to use that info and get our hands dirty out at Plantscapers. Jerry and Mary hosted a grove demo and the 6 of us created 2 groves and also got to discuss bonsai while checking out both Jerry's and Mary's bonsai trees. It was a Saturday morning that made me very antsy for those 50 degree days to show up. I also hope we can set up more get togethers to share the art of bonsai. April's meeting will be a fun one as we have the honor of having Jack Douthitt visit and demo working on jin and finding the "style" of 3 trees that Jerry will be bringing. Jack has a wealth of knowledge so be prepared to be educated. I would like to let everyone know that I am open to any ideas, thoughts, comments or concerns. Just get ahold of me with any of the above. My cell is 920-747-0073, email is [email protected] James Gumtow
