KEYNOTE PRESENTATION: BOB FAW of the Matchbox Group Energize Yourself and Your Home: You will learn the basic fundamentals of motivating yourself and the children you take care of. Bob will take cuttingedge brain science and make it simple, fun and memorable. He will focus on the self-care needed to support you in the vitally important role you play in the lives of children in care. Bob is a motivational speaker who brings his warmth and gratitude for caregivers like you. About the presenter: An author, keynote speaker, and positive change consultant, Bob Faw ignites passion for positive change around the world. He is the Chief Ignition Officer of the Matchbox Group. He is also the President of the Board of Vital Cycles, empowering trauma survivors on their healing journeys. He is a brain science geek who shares his insights with others who support children in need. Bob’s comedic style and energizing activities keep learners engaged, and supports great learning. He builds on learners’ strengths to build passion and rapport.

Morning Workshops: A1: Energize Tools Presented by Bob Faw A follow up from the Keynote: Bob will share the power of Energize Reframes. He will teach how to use this tool to positively motivate yourself and those you care for. There will be a fun, lowpressure game, and plenty of laughter as we share our mutual challenges, and create solutions to those challenges

A2: Life Stories Matter! Presented by Jennifer McAlister and Cynthia Hogan Jennifer and Cynthia are both Licensed Clinical Social Workers and are Child Protective Service Workers at DCYF in the Post Adoption unit. Their long experience with children and families includes years working at Casey Family Services. These colleagues share a passion for how critical it is that youth know as much as they can about their lives. They also run a support group in Concord for adoptive parents. Description of Workshop: Participants will learn the importance of life story work. Using the 3-5-7 model, the presenters will demonstrate how caregivers can support young children and teens in a quest for ‘who they are; what happened to them; where are they going; how will they get there; and when will they know they belong’. This is a life-long model that is important for all of us. It’s how attachments are built and connections are secured. Come join us as we explore a very effective and often fun solution to improved relationships.

A3: Starting and Maintain a Support Group Presented by NHFAPA board members and Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine, Inc. board members Do you feel alone or sometimes isolated as a resource parent? Do you think yourself as a leader? Are you someone who likes to hear and gain from other people’s expertise? Would you like to have the tools to start a grass-roots effort, or re-ignite a local support group just for resource parents? We invite at least one participant from each district office, ideally two or three, to join us for some concrete ways to start, re-start and re-energize your local support group. Local support groups, spearheaded by resource parents, can help with retention and recruitment of resource families, help find resources for families, problem solve situations, provide training opportunities and most importantly provide social and emotional support for the entire family. This workshop will start local groups of resource families in the right direction of self-advocacy and support. AS part of the follow from this workshop local support groups will receive mentoring from the NH-FAPA board members on an on-going quarterly basis.

A4: Working in Authentic Partnership with Birth Parents: Better Together Workshop Presented by Geraldo Pilarski and Darcy Tuoti Darcy Tuoti is the proud mother of two sons, one her own biological child and the other adopted after Darcy and husband fostered him for over 3 years. Darcy is a parent leader and she serves on the NH Parent Partner Program statewide Steering Committee and other collaboratives. Darcy has participated in several Better Together workshops and she is a strong believer in the Better Together philosophy that birth and foster parents working together provide the best atmosphere for a child to thrive and succeed. Geraldo Pilarski is the Parent Leadership Coordinator for the State of NH. He served as the Nashua District Office Supervisor for DCYF for 3 years prior to his current role, and has over 15 years of experience designing and implementing programs to serve and strengthen vulnerable families. Better Together is a curriculum developed by Casey Family Programs and implemented in New Hampshire. This curriculum strives to facilitate and support authentic partnerships between parents, staff, and community partners. The core of Better Together is training birth parents, foster parents, child welfare staff, and community allies together to learn more effective ways of engaging and partnering through the treatment planning process. The goal is to improve the lives of children. There are four key components of the Better Together model that drive the outcomes and approach: partnering effectively; recognizing expertise from parents, foster parents, and staff; practicing respect and equality, and exploring culture and beliefs to improve communication and decision making. This overview workshop is a capsulated format of a new training module being implemented by DCYF in 2014.

A5: Human Trafficking in the United States Presented by William Goullette William Goulette has been involved with Foster and Adoptive care for 25 years, as a foster and adoptive father as well as a foster child in the state of New Hampshire. Fueled by a passion for children and families, he became involved in the effort to educate, advocate for victims and eradicate the local existence of human trafficking. Description of workshop: The workshop will first give people an overview of what human trafficking is and how it could potentially involve children in care. Participants will be offered an opportunity to provide input into developing action plans for New Hampshire. This national issue has recently become an issue in a town near you!

Afternoon Workshop: Solution Based Casework The New Hampshire Division of Children Youth and Family has adopted what is called Solution Based Casework (SBC)for how to manage and support the families receiving their care. Solution Based Casework is an evidenced-based approach, which encourages DCYF staff to use a strength-based approach in working with children and families. SBC is built upon the assumption that people receiving support from DCYF have their own resources and empowers them to create and realize their own solutions. The model emphasizes strong rapport and active participation by all. Staff from DCYF will lead a discussion and share resources on the important role resource parents play in the process of improving the lives of the children in their care. The focus of SBC is on ‘change’ not so much ‘problem’ and how to move forward. Workshops are organized by regions and will be led by staff from district offices. Ample time to discuss scenarios and questions and answers will be allotted.
