Make It Happen

Dear Parents and Guardians, We have had a good first semester at Bayside Secondary School. Student Council and student leaders continue to be very active in the school. As well, we have been visiting the elementary schools and continue to work hard with the incoming Grade 8 students to support their transition to high school. On January 30th, staff hosted Grade 8 students for an orientation to the school to learn of the many exciting programs they can choose from and we had a large turnout of Grade 7 and 8 students at our 6th annual elementary dance on Feb. 1st. Semester two is off to a nice start. We would like to welcome Ms. Primeau and Ms. Tibbs to BSS and welcome back Ms. Boggett, Mrs. Saunders and Mrs. Webb. Please note that Parents’ Night for teacher interviews is scheduled for Thursday, April 4th and you can call Guidance to make appointments beginning Thursday, March 21st. The Early Progress report will be sent home on Wednesday, March 20th so you will have valuable information about progress and attendance which will help discussions with your student’s teachers. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to talk with teachers. Finally, our new course calendar has been posted on our website under the Course Calendar tab in the main header of the Home page. It can also be accessed here at this address - http://edu. hpedsb.on.ca/bss/custom/calendar/files/index.html As you talk over course choices for next year with your son or daughter, please take time to read the introduction of the calendar for additional important information about the school. We want to work with you to make your student’s experiences at BSS the most successful they can be.

Food for Learning

During semester I students at Bayside were able to access several nutrition programmes through the library and these programmes will continue Semester II. Before school and at break students can obtain basic breakfast items such as bagels and toast, oatmeal, fruit and yoghurt drinks. Many of our students get on buses at 6:45 in the morning and this means that quite a few head out the door not having eaten breakfast. Our breakfast programme means that not only are students getting the necessary fuel to start the day, but they also enjoy the few minutes available to socialize before their day starts. As of January, a conveyor toaster graces the breakfast buffet, making bagel toasting much faster and definitely more fun! Students may also pick up a snack at nutrition break and throughout the day. On average, our nutrition programme goes through a bag of Campbell’s Orchards apples a day! Students who don’t have a lunch know that they can pick up lunch at the library. Menu items vary. Sandwiches are the mainstay menu option, but a hot lunch such as lasagna or meat pies is offered once a week. Holidays are usually marked and this year was no exception. A special grant

from the Learning Foundation’s Food for Learning programme made it possible to serve Christmas dinner to 75 students. Turkey, dressing, potatoes and gravy were enjoyed by all, along with cheesecake lollipops for dessert. A special thank you goes out to Mr. Campbell and Mrs. Lloyd who helped with the meal preparation and serving. Bayside would not be able to offer nutrition programmes without the generous donations and funding from various agencies. The Learning Foundation’s Food for Learning programme is our key benefactor. We also received a grant from the provincial Breakfast for Learning programme. Weekly donations from Deweys (four loaves of bread) and Ararmark ( two 4L bags of milk) supplement our breakfast programme. Bayside was also the recipient of a large donation from the monies raised at last year’s 24-4-Hunger fund raiser. These organizations help ensure that no student at Bayside is ever hungry during the school day, but anyone who grocery shops knows that groceries are expensive. If you would like to make a grocery or monetary donation to our Food for Learning programmes, please contact Mrs. Morrow at 966-2922, ext. 2126.

Co-op News We would like to thank each of our Co-op placements for their commitment to Bayside. We are always impressed with the outstanding support we receive from our community of employers. They play a key role in developing the talents and abilities of our students in the workplace. In return, Bayside students work hard to meet expectations and to demonstrate their growing skills and knowledge. Many also attend college one day a week in dual credit programmes to experience the college environment and train in areas related to their co-op experience. Each semester Co-op students showcase what they have learned to the whole school by creating displays and presentations for our Career Fair. This semester we had some outstanding displays.

The following businesses provided placements, training and support for Bayside Co-op students! Thank you for being our partners in workplace education! Bayside’s Got Talent On Friday, December 21st, the last day before Winter Break, Student Council put on Bayside’s annual Holiday Extravaganza. The Holiday Extravaganza is a celebration of student talents and the successes of our first semester. Over fifteen acts from singing to juggling were performed and really got Bayside students into the holiday mood. Highlights included a holiday sing-along with the LSP class and an appearance of Mr. Allin and the Boys who released their second Holiday CD this year. With all the amazing talent Bayside has to offer, this ninety minute show was the perfect way to kick off Winter Break! Student Council is looking forward to a new semester and many great events to come! Videos of our talented performers can be found on Bayside’s YouTube page: BSSnews12

Mock Disaster

Grade 8 Transition There are many activities occurring at BSS to support Grade 8 students as they continue their transition to high school. During the second week of January, we began our transition support by visiting the elementary schools to begin discussing course programs and selections at BSS. On Wednesday, January 30th, Grade 8 students visited BSS to continue their transition to high school and they were applauded by our full staff as they entered the school to participate in their Orientation day. After a multimedia presentation using the large projection screen in the cafeteria and a welcome from our student leaders, student groups visited different subject areas where they were involved in various hands on activities - many of them involving our interactive Smartboard technology and iPads at the school. The day ended with the Grade 8 students showing their strong spirit and enthusiasm. On Thursday, February 1st , Grade 7 and 8 students attended a dance to welcome students to the social side of the school. Students had an exciting time meeting students from other schools. The next major transition session will be held on Thursday, February 21st, when all Grade 8 students and their parents are invited to attend our Grade 8 Parents’ Night. The session will start at 7:00 pm. We are looking forward to further discussions with parents regarding their son’s or daughter’s transition to the high school.

Students in Mr. Stephens’ Natural Disaster Class participated in a unique and exciting experience with Quinte West Emergency Services this semester. The class was asked to support a mock evacuation at a local nursing home as part of municipal planning for disaster response. The staff of Trent Valley Lodge, Bayside students, and local volunteers became the designated “victims” of a disaster, requiring the evacuation of the facility. Students played the role of elderly residents, requiring the students to use canes, walkers and wheelchairs for realism. Some were assigned roles with additional medical complications requiring special handling by the emergency response team. Of course, the students loved this role playing exercise, and felt good about helping the Emergency Services team and the Trent Valley staff practice important evacuation and emergency procedures. Following the successful conclusion of the mock emergency, the students enjoyed a debriefing session with fire fighters, emergency response personnel, and municipal leaders. They learned that our community has plans in place and is prepared to respond in the event of a disaster. Many different scenarios are considered and appropriate plans for each are at the ready. The students also learned that our local response is integrated and coordinated with regional plans for wide spread natural disasters. Overall, it was a terrific experience for our Bayside students. We appreciated the opportunity to work in partnership with emergency services and municipal authorities. We were able to both support our community and enhance our educational experience. -7-
