elcome to the 28th edition of the Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals, the event that’s often referred to as an international celebration. Each year, we have vehicles from at least seven countries and nearly 40 unique manufacturers. In addition to the aforementioned import vehicles, we have replicas that pay tribute to numerous manufacturers from a variety of countries. If that’s not enough, we also have kit vehicles that are totally unique creations from some incredible designers. We are honored to host all of the clubs, groups and individuals that make up this great show! My role in this international celebration is to provide an enjoyable venue with activities and guests that will ultimately make for an unforgettable weekend. To that end, it’s my personal goal to improve the show each year by growing the existing activities and features as well as adding new ones. With the diversity of this event, your role is to provide me with your input and feedback so I can make the show as enjoyable as possible for everyone. As you’re enjoying the show this weekend, I ask that you please think about what you like, what you think we can make better, what you don’t like and what we can add to the show in the future. After the show, please take the time to complete the survey online and give your honest feedback. If you prefer, you are more than welcome to contact me directly at EdB@ CarlisleEvents.com or (717) 243-7855. This is a show that arguably offers more diversity than any of our others. When it comes to planning this event, that diversity creates some unique challenges but in the end it results in one of our most enjoyable shows. Ultimately, it becomes several shows in one venue, and no matter what brand you prefer, there are more than 1,000 other cars to enjoy this weekend. Make sure you step out of your comfort zone and take the time to enjoy all of the amazing vehicles! — Ed Buczeskie, Event Manager

his is our second year as an official partner of Carlisle Events, and we’re proud to be working with Carlisle to create these directories. Pick up a free copy of our magazines at one of the several newsstands at the show. Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals is a place for dreamers, where someone with a good skill set and some time can use sweat-equity to create the replica Cobra of their dreams. Or if you want to change out your old-fashioned carburetor to a modern injection system, you’ll find what you need here. In today’s world, we all spend a lot of time on the Internet, both for business and for our hobbies. But nothing beats walking down an aisle filled with vendors who are enthusiasts just like you, who are glad to have a conversation with you about your project — and help guide you down the path to success. I do have some tips when it comes to enjoying Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals. First, if a booth looks like it is full of stuff that could be useful to you, take a picture of it with your camera or smartphone. I always seem to lose business cards, but if I take a picture that has a name and contact number in it, chances are I’ll be able to find it later. Second, if you come across a part you’ve been looking for for some time, and the price is right, just buy it. Right then. Don’t think you’ll come back in 10 or 20 or 90 minutes. You’ll wander away, and if you do come back, that rare part might just be gone. And finally, when you get home, take a hard look at your own garage. Is there some stuff that you’ve “been meaning to get to” for a decade now? If there is (and I’m sure there will be) reserve your booth space now for the Carlisle swap meet that fits your stuff, and move it down the road. Remember, every part that goes away means you have that much more room for something new! Enjoy your time here, and I hope you go home with a trunk full of stuff for your project. — Keith Martin, Sports Car Market publisher

Peter Brock is known within automotive circles for many reasons to many people. If you’re passionate about the Corvette, he’s the guy who penned the lines of the original Stingray racer and by extension the ’63 Corvette “split window.” For Cobra fans, Brock’s the guy who took the brick-like Shelby Cobra roadster and turned it into the slippery Cobra Daytona Coupe — the first American car to grab the FIA’s GT World Championship. Datsun devotees love to remember the man who, as part of Brock Racing Enterprises during the late ’60s and early ’70s, brought success to the brand. Brock was a fun-loving hipster who coolly called the shots as BRE’s 510 coupes decimated the Alfas and Porsches of the Trans-Am 2.5 series. Brock is a true innovator within the industry and you can meet this great man onsite throughout the weekend.

We are very pleased to have the famed #46 BRE Datsun 510 on display this weekend courtesy of Nissan Motor Corporation. Driven by John Morton, it won the Under 2.5 Trans Am Championships in 1971 and 1972. The 1.8-liter engine develops 190 horsepower at 8,000 RPM. It ushered in and solidly established the value of Japanese imports and so totally dominated the series that all competition withdrew, thereby canceling the series! Be sure to see this car and Peter Brock in Building Y this weekend.

Swap Meet & Car Corral Find a vehicle in the car corral (located across from the food court) and shop the swap meet. You’ll find new product manufacturers, accessories, parts and memorabilia. Vendors are listed by specialty and alphabetically on pages 20-21. Title transfer services are offered at the notary office in the pavilion and financial services are available through Orrstown Bank in Building T.
Passport Take a tour of the world by participating in the Passport Program. It’s simple and fun, and after you complete your tour of the showfield, you will have a chance to win prizes as well as a limited-edition collector pin at Guest Services. Participants who collect all seven stamps and complete the registration form will have a chance to win the grand prize — a free weekend at next year’s event. See pages 16-17.
Special Displays Building Y features a spectacular display showcasing many fine vehicles in the form of both imports and kits. See page 12. Building R has a great display of French vehicles. See page 14. The Chairman’s Heritage Invitational Display is located under the tent in the Saab area on the showfield.

event. Each year, clubs compete to see which has the most vehicles in attendance, and awards are presented to the top three. There is also an award presented to the club with the coolest hangout. The award is based on predetermined criteria to see who best represents the spirit of the show. See who won last year on page 28.
Carlisle Elite • We will be roaming the showfield on Friday in search of our 10 favorite vehicles to become the newest members of the Carlisle Elite. To be picked for the Carlisle Elite, your car doesn’t have to be rare or a high-dollar professional restoration. Rather, we are looking for cool cars that just capture our attention. Make sure your car is registered and parked on the showfield Friday to be eligible. Winners receive a prize pack that includes an Elite shirt, hat and trophy. Awards presented on Sunday. Carlisle Winner’s Circle • On Saturday our team will choose a vehicle from each showfield that we feel best represents each country of origin as well as the kit cars. Make sure your car is registered and parked on the showfield Saturday to be eligible. We are looking for the finest examples we can find and the winners will receive a really nice Winners’ Circle jacket. Awards presented on Sunday.
different country, and this year it’s the vehicles of Sweden. Our Saab and Volvo clubs never disappoint by filling large areas on the showfield. Look for them and other things of Swedish interest this weekend.
Standard of Excellence • For those who have taken their car to the next level, we offer Standard of Excellence Judging. Owners compete against a set of criteria on the judging sheets rather than against other vehicles. Our qualified judging team consists of knowledgeable automotive enthusiasts and industry professionals. It takes place in front of the grandstand.
Race Car Paddock • The Race Car Paddock, sponsored

by Vintage Motorsport, is located on the showfield near Building Y. It is reserved exclusively for imports and kits that are set up for racing. All race cars are eligible — from road racers and autocross to drag and rally cars. Show off your race car and hang out with fellow drivers and race enthusiasts. If you get the urge to get some track time in, you can always make a few laps on our autocross road course.
The Susquehanna Region of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and its Chapter Club, the Appalachian Sports Car Club, will conduct autocross on Saturday and Sunday. Each participant will get three runs of three laps against the clock. Scoring will be done on an overall basis using an index designed to adjust for the performance capabilities of the different cars. The experience is designed to allow you to test your performance on the course. It will also be useful if you want to learn more about your car’s potential and

The charge for each entry is $25. When you register, you will choose a specific session. There are eight drivers per session. Check in at least 30 minutes prior to your start time for sign-in and safety inspection. Participants must be at least 18 years old and have a current driver’s license. Helmets are required; loaner helmets are available. Registration closes when the sessions are filled.
Kids Activities 2013 Kids at Carlisle Activity Center features crafts, a playset and a bounce house. Our young enthusiasts and parents alike can enjoy a pit stop during their visit while they spend some time coloring, painting or simply having a seat while the kids run off some steam in the playground area. Every child receives a free gift when visiting. Attention, parents: Please be advised that the Kids at Carlisle Activity Center is not a child care service. Parental supervision is required.
Kids Choice Awards Carlisle Events wants to hear what car (in Building Y) the kids think is the coolest! Voting ballots available at Guest Services, Kids at Carlisle Activity Center and Building Y at the ballot box. The Kids Choice winner will be announced Sunday during the Awards Parade.
Block Party Friday Night Everyone is invited to Downtown Carlisle Friday evening for the second annual Block Party. Parking is reserved for registered vehicles with their Carlisle showfield sticker on the windshield. Reserved areas will be marked with bagged parking meters on North Hanover Street from North Street to the square. This is not a parade — rather it is a collection of like-minded enthusiasts gathering to dine, shop and socialize “after hours” off grounds. Detailed street maps with a list of the downtown business are available at Guest Services.
Free Shuttle to Downtown Carlisle On Saturday we will provide a free shuttle to historic Downtown Carlisle that will run continuously from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Rather than a traditional seminar, John Twist of University Motors LTD is here to actually diagnose and repair your British classic! John will listen to the owner’s description of the problem then do what he can to make the car run better. Some issues may be too complex for John to repair, but rest assured he’ll do his best and at the very least, you’ll have an expert diagnosis to improve your odds of resolving the issue on your own after the show.
John Twist, the MG guru of University Motors in Ada, Michigan, will discuss the basics of British electrical systems. From the battery to the generator, from the fuse box to the wiper motor and lights, you will learn how to diagnose and repair common problems, followed by a Q&A.
Peter Brock worked on the design of the ’63 Corvette Stingray and had great success with his race team, Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE), but in between those two milestones he also worked for Shelby American. While at Shelby American, Brock designed the World Championship-winning Cobra Daytona coupe. Join Brock as he discusses the origins and design of the Cobra Daytona coupe.
Rust Repair and Welding As long as your classic isn’t made of fiberglass (and even if it is), you’re going to have to deal with rust repair at some point. Carl Heideman from Eclectic Motorworks and Classic Motorsports Magazine will discuss how to keep rust away, how to repair it when necessary, and how to develop good welding skills along the way.
Which Carb is Best? There are always rivalries in the classic-car world: Ford vs. Chevy, MG vs. Triumph, coupe vs. convertible. Among the most polarizing are debates about carbs: SU vs. Weber. European vs Japanese, even carbs vs. fuel injection. Carl Heideman from Eclectic Motorworks and Classic Motorsports Magazine will discuss how to decide which setup will work best for you, along with some basic tuning hints and some thoughts about dealing with modern ethanol-blended fuels.

Tuning and Performance John Twist (University Motors LTD) and Carl Heideman (Eclectic Motorworks LLC) will explain how to get the most performance out of your British sports car. They will carefully explain how to find and unleash hidden power and performance. Ignition, carburetion, emissions and drivetrain issues will be discussed. Other topics include advanced concepts such as fuel injection, supercharging and engine swaps.
Forgotten Fiberglass Too long untold, too long forgotten, the history of building your own sports car in postwar America has long been clouded in mystery, intrigue and controversy. Join us for our first ever seminar on this lost time in America chaired by our veteran speaker Harold Pace of Kit Car Builder magazine and welcoming for the first time the folks from Forgotten Fiberglass: Geoff Hacker and Rick D’Louhy. Their talk will be set up in panel style with all three speakers taking turns to review the history of handcrafted sports cars spanning the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s such as the Glasspar G2, Woodill Wildfire, Grantham Stardust, Chicagoan, Devin, LaDawri, Kellison, Fiberfab, CRV, and others.
Renault-Powered Fiberglass Cars In conjunction with the French car display in Building R, we are proud to present special guest Dr. Geoff Hacker of Tampa, FL, a collector of Renaults for more than thirty years as well as a leading authority on early Fiberglass and Kit cars. Geoff will be giving a seminar on history of Renault powered fiberglass cars. He will be assisted by Marvin McFalls, president of the Renault Owners Club of North America.

GO GO VOLVO
2.9 Million Miles and Still Driving! By Mike Garland
H
ow many cars have you owned? What about how many cars you think you’ll own in your lifetime? How many miles are on your daily driver? Do you get apprehensive when your car gets past 60,000/80,000/100,000 miles and think, “it’s time for a new car?” Ok, enough with the questions, the facts look something like this: The average home owns 2.28 cars, and various reports online state that the average person will own somewhere between 9 and 15 cars in their lifetime. In addition, people tend to sell or trade in a car on average when it’s 41/2 years old with just 41,000 miles on it. Keeping all that information in mind, meet Irv Gordon of East Patchogue, New York. Irv turns 73 July 15, is a retired science teacher and has owned his 1966 Volvo P1800 since June of that very same year. After purchasing his car, Irv took it for a spin; in fact he drove his P1800 about 1,500 miles within the first 48 hours of owning it. Sounds like a lot, right? It is! But where did he go during those first two days? “I lived in Long Island at the time when I got the car; I just drove around in the surrounding states,” said Irv. “I enjoyed driving the car a lot. I got the car on a Friday, and between the time I drove it off the lot and Monday morning, I took my folks and some friends for a ride, visited some of my favorite stomping grounds to show off, drove to Philadelphia, Baltimore and Boston and all through my area. I was just having so much fun!” It wasn’t just the first two days that helped rack up the miles on his Volvo, Irv’s drive to and from work each day was somewhere around 125 miles, so that in and of itself meant about 25,000 miles per year. Add various other driving-related needs into Irv’s schedule, and by 1976, the 200th anniversary of our country, Irv had tallied 500,000 miles. “I was always going somewhere in those days,” added Irv. “I skied, had a few ‘girlfriends’ to visit and was always on the move.” Always being on the move meant that 22 years later, in 1998, Irv and his cherished Volvo earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most miles driven by a single owner in a non-commercial vehicle at 1,690,000. Yikes! “Setting a record was not my goal when I purchased

the car. I was just happy to have a reliable car that did not break down when I would drive to or from work. When I bought it, I knew nothing about European cars,” noted Irv. “A friend showed me an ad in Car and Driver Magazine for the car, I took it for a test drive, fell in love with it and the rest is history! How many people have a car that has had such a profound impact on their life? I’ve gone to many wonderful places because of this car. I’m very fortunate.” Irv and his Volvo have been to Carlisle before, in fact, he’s been coming to Carlisle for almost 30 years, missing just a few shows during that time frame. With nearly 3,000,000 miles on his car, New York to Carlisle isn’t the only place Irv drives his car. At one time the P1800 went with Irv everywhere. He has driven in all contiguous 48 states, Europe and Canada. He’s also driven across Australia, but in someone else’s car. Recently Irv was at the 1800’s 50th anniversary in France and was given a loaner car courtesy of Volvo. What did Irv do? He saw the sights like any red-blooded tourist and oh, he also put a few thousand miles on the loaner. Of course! Maintenance and luck have led Irv and his car to where they are today. It is one thing to rotate and change tires, change the oil or get a tune-up; it’s another to have not been run off the road, run into or damaged in any number of ways over the course of 47 years. “I’ve had a lot of misses that stand out,” continued Irv. “I’ve been hit by trucks, tractor trailers and school buses. The engine has been rebuilt twice and the body has been beaten in (and out), but for the most part, my car is just as original as it was the day I drove it off the lot.” As slowing the pace goes, Irv claims he has slowed down a bit. In the ’90s, Irv and the Volvo went over the 2,000,000-mile mark while driving down Broadway in Times Square. With a car that is approaching 3,000,000 miles on it, what’s next? Irv chuckled at that question, stating that “there is no way I am making 4,000,000 miles. I’ve gotten a new car each time I turn another million from Volvo and at some point soon, I want to take a brand-new Volvo and drive it coast to coast — enjoying all of the modern amenities and craftsmanship that Volvo is known for.” CarlisleEvents.com

VENDOR PROFILE: JOE LAZENBY I
n 1986, the Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals launched and the international fun has been ongoing ever since. During the same time, the automotive industry has changed a lot, both foreign and domestic. Some companies have folded, others have new ownership and some took “bailout loans” from the government. One thing that has remained unchanged is longtime vendor Joe Lazenby and his passion for vintage Volvo cars and parts. Joe has been a vendor here since ’86 and really enjoys the camaraderie of the event. “It is the traveling and meeting so many fantastic people that keeps me going,” says Lazenby of nearby Harrisburg. “After 40 years in the Volvo hobby, I’ve realized that not only are the people at Carlisle some of the best around, but Volvo people are great too. Sometimes the folks I meet at Carlisle and beyond that are into the hobby are often nicer, funnier and more fascinating than the cars themselves.” Lazenby, a retired guidance counselor from the Harrisburg and Camp Hill School Districts, is the owner of Susquehanna Spares. Joe knows Volvos, so much so that he knows of or has his fingers in a lot of the business deals in the U.S. that involve older Volvos. Since 1973, he has dedicated most of his time to Volvo cars, first as a hobby and then full time since his retirement. He buys and rebuilds, finds parts, acts as an intermediary or sells to other enthusiasts. Those who need parts for older Volvos know Joe. His network is huge and international. He deals all over the place. Joe keeps two large warehouse buildings stocked with parts, one of them in Carlisle. Some of the parts are great, others not so much. Some are new, some are used but all are more or less suited for every classic Volvo model there is; and, of course, there are some really nice collector cars in there too. “I probably own the best collection of P220 Amazon wagons in the world,” Lazenby said. “Now that is a car that I really like. Over the years I have also owned three Volvo Sports (P1900). Most recently, I snagged a Volvo 122 wagon and drove it back to Pennsylvania from West Palm Beach. It’s the second time I owned this car too and it drove great!” It was Joe’s brother, John, that actually got him on the Volvo track. In 1973, John was looking for a nice and reliable commuter but it also had to be quick and fun to drive. Joe scanned the neighborhood and eventually found a 1968 Amazon 123 GT. John bought it and was so happy with the car that he kept it — and still owns it today! Not long after, Joe was drawn more and more into the world of Volvos, got to know a lot of people who worked for Volvo or with Volvos and who

dedicated their spare time to the cars. “All of a sudden I realized that I had really found something meaningful to do in my spare time,” he says. “As time went by, the hobby became more and more of a profession. For me the ‘fun factor’ is of vital importance, and I have never had a dull moment since I began collecting and working on Volvos. I have been met with open doors and open arms everywhere I go and have gotten to know people who have become close friends.” Joe has crossed North America twice in older Volvos, once in a Duett and the second time in a PV544, in order to maintain his network and just for the pleasure of driving an old Volvo across the country. He also travels to Sweden now and then to visit his business partner, VP Autoparts, to search for parts, maybe buy a car or two and meet with friends. VP Autoparts also has a location in South Carolina. Joe also has a base camp of sorts in Sweden with friend David Little, allowing for business to get done that much easier. Joe has sold classic and collectible Volvo cars both ways across the Atlantic for several decades, and this especially applies to Sweden. The cars have mostly been the more sporty and rare PV and Amazon versions and, of course, the 1800. First the Volvos were exported to the U.S. when they were new. Later on, enthusiasts have brought many of the cars back to Europe. Some cars have even travelled back to the states a second time. “To sell a car or advise somebody about purchasing a good Volvo and then to have that person really enjoy and appreciate what you have done — it really warms your heart and makes you feel good. Sometimes it is a piece of cake and on other occasions, more work is involved. What counts is that everyone is pleased and that is what usually happens. My brother, John, is perhaps the best example, even if it was my first attempt at a new business,” Joe said. With such a strong background within the hobby, it’s only natural that Joe has been at Carlisle for almost three decades. “My initial draw to the event was to sell parts in the swap meet. Over the years, the show has evolved and while the swap aspect is still good to me, the face-to-face contact with the enthusiasts really helps, too. The weekend is very laid-back and a great place to see great cars and mingle with good people. Not only do I see old friends, I make new ones. Business is good, too, and I just love coming here.” Look for Joe, a true wealth of Volvo knowledge at the event this weekend. You can find him and Susquehanna Spares in Row E, spaces 73-77. AABs @ Carlisle, from its humblest beginning with three SAABs, to now drawing nearly 300 cars and well over 400 participants, the event has become one not to be missed by SAAB enthusiasts. Typically the event draws participants from as many as 22 states. We have also had attendees travel from Canada, Sweden, Australia and England. Interestingly, we are also a very welcoming and diverse group. Attendees in their 20s mix very well with those among us in their 70s and all ages in between. There typically is an abundance of SAAB chat as one would expect, but many of our members are equally well-versed versed in vintage British or German vehicles, race cars

or anything with internal combustion, wheels, wings, propellers or turbines. The conversational topics are nearly limitless. Our circus-size display tent will once again display some very historical examples of SAAB’s heritage, which is an invitational gathering called “Chairman’s Invitational Display.” While SAAB as a company is now gone, the spirit and the camaraderie that has always been a part of SAAB ownership still remains strong. With the creation of SAAB Parts North America to fulfill the need for parts, the outlook does look good for keeping SAABs on the road for many more years to come.

Since they were coming from all areas of the U.S., Carlisle was the perfect central location. They are celebrating 10 years at Carlisle in 2013, having been coming since 2004, and each year their crew gets bigger and bigger. Old, new, shiny, rusty — it doesn’t matter as long as it’s from Audi. This show continues to be a great combination of people, cars, food, stories and fun.
