The Role of Learning Styles: How After School Programs Bridge The Gap After school programs are essential to educating the whole child. Joinus, as Bette Fetter, author of Being Visual; Raising a Generation of Innovative Thinkers, shares current trends in education and the way existing policies and programs are affecting our students. During this session, you’ll take part in an interactive discussion on learning styles. You’ll find out how you learn best, how to build a balanced and effective team and how you can better meet the needs of the students in your care. By better understanding who your students are and whatthey need, you’ll gain mastery in developing and selecting after school programs that meet their needs.

Activities will include ways to help early readers be more successful, improve handwriting, write essays and use the arts to develop learning skills.

Team Building with Youth Presenters: Elizabeth Tanner and Jess Dunning Focus: Track-Social and Emotional Development Site Coordinators at Milestones Audience: All During our session we will explore how to use teambuilding exercises to develop community within your classroom. We will explore the structure of a team, underlying components of community, and the value of utilizing diversity. Our hands-on exercises will help promote positive self-esteem, cooperation, respect, effective communication and responsibility. We are all looking to create a safe environment for our children both mentally and physically. This session will give you the tools you need to accomplish this.

After School Book Exploration: A STEM Shared Experience Presenter: Sara Bryce Kozla Focus: Track-Program Activities Audience: All Book exploration boosts brain power and keeps kids engaged. Tap into what elementary kids really want to learn about, and take back ready-made successful programs to your site! Sara “Bryce” Kozla is a youth services librarian in La Crosse, WI, specializing in elementary school programming, partnerships, and literature. A former educator, she has presented all over Wisconsin about: creating and maintaining a welcoming library environment for families, kid-centered programming, school outreach and partnerships, and cognitive development. She received the Wisconsin Library Association 2012 Rising Star award, and was a member of the American Library Association Emerging Leaders class of 2013. News and Updates from Child Care Licensing Presenter: Anne Carmody Focus: Program Administration Audience: Site Directors, Grades 4K-5 Staff Representatives from the Department of Children and Families Child Care Licensing will share updates relating to fingerprint background checks and other information. There will be time to get any questions answered. Anne Carmody is the child care program specialist for the Department of Children and Families, Bureau of Early Care Regulation.

Yes You Can: Create Fun, Exciting Learning Opportunities With Recycled and Repurposed Materials on a Budget Presenter: Pattie Godsell and Johanna Moss Focus: Program Activities Audience: All Join us for an exciting, creative hands-on workshop using recycled and repurposed materials. Learning opportunities are designed to meet individual learning styles and integrate the nine core content areas. Pattie Godsell holds a BS degree in Physical Education and is currently licensed to teach K-12 physical education in the state of Wisconsin. Present duties and experience include actively working as a YoungStar technical consultant and supporting quality care for education for children. Pattie recently facilitated a Health and Wellness Early Care and Education pilot grant program. Pattie is currently a State of Wisconsin Registryapproved PDAS Master Trainer. Pattie has designed Health and Wellness curricula addressing: childhood obesity prevention, music and movement, developing literacy skills, and medication administration. Pattie is also an approved trainer for the School Age Curricular Framework Training. Pattie maintains the belief that trainings that explore high quality programming are paramount to creating sustainable positive learning opportunities for children.

Learn how our Kids’ Club and Teacher in the Library programs offer educational content cleverly disguised as fun. We like to think of it as “cheese covered broccoli.” Participants will receive lesson plan samples.

Jen is the owner/trainer of JLK Training and Consulting. She has presented at the WAA Conference in the past as well as the NAEYC Conference and ISACA Conference. She also trains locally in Iowa and is certified through the CCR&R with 15+ years of child care experience.

Family Strengthening-Parental Involvement Presenter: Frederick Buggs Focus: Parental Involvement Audience: All Family strengthening/parental involvement-learn how to implement family programming. Designed to increase parent involvement in after school programming. Chief professional officer, Stateline Boys and Girls Clubs. Experience in speaking on variety of issues locally, regionally and nationally.

Stress Management for Professionals Who Work With Children Presenter: Don Bennett Focus: Social and Emotional Development Audience: All Participants will learn concepts of stress, be able to recognize symptoms of stress, understand the “good” and “bad” sides of stress, and coping skills to get through the hard times created by stressful situations in one’s life. Recreation manager – 16 years of experience in the field as a recreation professional and trainer. Master trainer on The Registry.

SATURDAY SESSION 2 • 10:50 a.m.-12 p.m. Using Love and Logic® for Healthy Relationships and Positive Discipline - First of Two Sessions Presenter: Kristal Melbye Focus: Child and Youth Development, Child Guidance, Social and Emotional Development Audience: Grades 4K-5 Staff FIRST SEESION: learn strategies to set limits without anger, manage disruptive students, and help students learn to solve their own problems. This will be continued in the second session. Kristal Melbye taught in Milwaukee Public Schools for seven years. She currently spends the days with her children (ages 8, 6, and 4-year-old twins) and facilitates Love and Logic® parenting courses in the evenings.

Liz Humphrey has been a library youth educator at the Milwaukee Public Library for four years. She has worked in the non-profit youth services and arts fields in Milwaukee for 17 years in grant writing, program planning/evaluation, volunteer management, education and consulting. Liz has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UW-Milwaukee. Victoria Sanchez has been an education specialist with the Milwaukee Public Library for six years. She has coordinated both early literacy and school age programs including Summer Reading outreach. Previously, Victoria worked as a teacher and teacher mentor. Past speaking engagements include Wisconsin Association of Public Libraries, MPS’ Early Reading First Conference, Wisconsin Library Association Conference, Texas State Reading Association Conference and Orton Dyslexia Society Convention.

Wisconsin Shares EBT - Parent Pay Presenter: Mary Drumm Focus: Program Administration Audience: Site Coordinators Currently, the Department of Children and Families issues Wisconsin Shares child care subsidy payments directly to child care providers after the care is provided. By 2017, Wisconsin Shares parents will initiate child care subsidy payments to the child care providers via an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. Child care operators and administrators will hear how this change will impact them. The presentation will include an overview of the Parent Pay project, a brief description of how Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards work, the timelines for implementation, and the resources that will be available to child care providers and parents. There will be a question and answer period following the presentation. Mary Drumm has a long history in the child care field. She served as a child care teacher in Appleton and Milwaukee for five years before accepting a senior auditor position for the Department of Children and Families in 2009. As a senior auditor, Mary was a team lead in client and provider child care investigations for the Wisconsin Shares Program. She developed new processes and procedures for the Program Integrity Unit and trained numerous local and state staff. In May of 2014, Mary transferred to her current position as a program and policy analyst in the Department of Children and Families and has taken a lead role for the Wisconsin Shares EBT - Parent Pay project. Mary has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. She has one cat named Patches and loves winter weather.

Dramatic Play Fun Presenter: Teri Luepritz and Jody Ripley Focus: Program Development Audience: Frontline Staff Children socialize through dramatic play. We will create a fun and exciting play area. You will receive ideas to incorporate into you classroom. Teri is the site supervisor/enrollment assistant to the YWCA of Rock County. Jody Ripley is the site supervisor of YWCA Rock County.

Culture Change Your Staff Team Presenter: Jen Kovach Focus: Program Administration Audience: Site Directors Could the culture at you program be more positive? This interactive workshop will help to evaluate the current culture and share ways to turn things from negative to positive by focusing on teamwork, motivation and communication. Family Engagement Youngstar Training Key Points Presenter: Erin Armbrust Focus: Parental Involvement Audience: All This workshop focuses on how to engage families within your programs. Evidence based support and guiding principles. Erin Armbrust is a family engagement program and policy analyst for Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge grant at the Department of Children and Families.

Promoting Social-Emotional in After School for Ages 6-11 Presenter: Quinn Wilder Focus: Social and Emotional Development Audience: Grades 3-5 This workshop will present what social-emotional learning is and how to promote it in activity designs and in facilitation and interaction with groups and individual children ages 6-11. Quinn Wilder is a senior outreach specialist at the Youth Work Learning Center at UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education. Quinn has presented at numerous youth work conferences such as International Child and Youth Care Conferences in Canada, the National Afterschool Conference in Indianapolis in 2013, and the Wisconsin Association of Child and Youth Care Conferences in Milwaukee. Quinn is part of an exciting after school quality improvement research and implementation project in Milwaukee that engages about 20 local after school site directors in an extended learning cohort focusing on supervisory skills that enhance program quality, and works closely with eight of these sites in an on-site quality advising capacity to assist in implementing new practices.

C.O.R.E Communication - Everyone Communicates, Few Connect Presenter: Theresa French Focus: Program Development Audience: All Discover the four C.O.R.E. principles to becoming a person of influence through communication and develop new communication skills that connect and build stronger relationships at work, at home and in the world at large. Theresa French- Certified John Maxwell Team Coach, Speaker & Trainer. She is a member of the National Speakers Association as well as NSA Chair-Person for the Storyteller’s PEG (Professional Experts Group). Theresa has spoken to audiences nationally and has facilitated specialized training to corporations including Fantastic Sams and Little Ceasars Pizza. She has also been invited to present to audiences at such corporations General Mills, Cargil, US Bank Corp and many more. Theresa is an energetic and engaging speaker who brings a strong sense of “reality” to her presentations. Theresa shares practical, actionable principles and tools so audience members can being using these concepts immediately in real, practical ways.

Presenters: Katie Roth Focus: Program Design and Quality Audience: All From start to finish and everything in between, learn about program design and quality before and after school programs. We will also design a lesson plan to create a more intentional, well-paced and fun learning experience which provides participants with a high-impact and holistic approach.

A physical education teacher for 10+ years, Jim returns for a second year to the WAA Conference. Building community in his current setting is important because the population he deals with on a daily basis is students with emotional and behavioral disorders. He has spoken to numerous groups in the Midwest.

She graduated from Edgewood College in 1994 with a Bachelor’s Degree is Elementary Education. She completed her ECE Leadership Credential from UW Milwaukee in 2012. Jill brings 20 years of experience as an educator, instructor, master teacher and trainer. She taught second grade for 16 years in the Monona Grove School District and has been a trainer across the country for various programs. She is an instructional coach as well and has worked as a consultant for various programs and school districts, including Madison Metropolitan School District Jill is an approved master trainer with The Registry Professional Development System. She is well known for providing upbeat, fun, and useful trainings that bring teachers to the heart of their passion for working with children.

Katie Roth is the school age and day camp director for Feith Family Ozaukee YMCA. She has worked at the YMCA. Katie has a Bachelor’s Degree in Community Engagement and Education from UW-Milwaukee. She has trained at local YMCA trainings as well as the YMCA Mid-America Camping Conference.

SATURDAY SESSION 4 • 2:45-4 p.m. The Space Between Presenters: Angel Stoddard Focus: Child and Youth Development Audience: All It is said that the space between the logs makes the fire. So it goes, the space between allows us to reflect…on current brain research such as epigenetics and how we really can rewire the brain In this workshop we’ll explore on the impact current brain research offers to help us manage our emotions and help students better manage theirs. Learn a few practical things you can do to rewire the brain. Annie Meehan is a professional and motivational speaker with NSA as well as a certified life and wellness coach. She has spoken over 100 times in Minnesota and five times in Wisconsin.

The Power of Words Presenter: Annie Meehan Focus: Social and Emotional Development Audience: All This presentation is about the positive and negative impact that words have on people of all ages. Once released words cannot be taken back, choose what you say wisely. Jim is a certified athletic trainer for 20 years and a physical education teacher for nine years in suburban Chicago. The last six years, he has been at a therapeutic day school for children with emotional and behavioral disorders in addition to learning disabilities. He has presented to several student organizations throughout Illinois and Indiana.

Bridget Cullen is a program and policy analyst for YoungStar from the Department of Children and Families. Bridget has more than 35 years of experience in family and youth development and early care and education. She has served as child care wellness coordinator with DHS, executive director of the Child Care Resource and Referral previously located in Oshkosh, adjunct lecturer with the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh, Northeast Technical College and Fox Valley Technical College. She is a recognized trainer for the Portage Project Family Service Credential. Bridget has administered large early childhood and school age programs for various non-profit agencies located in the Midwest. A graduate from Oklahoma State University with a master’s in education and from Concordia University – Nebraska with a bachelor’s in education.

Awakening the Gifts of Character Presenter: Terry Rahn and Valerie Hess Focus: Social and Emotional Development Audience: All Language has the power to discourage or to inspire. Virtues are in everyone in potential and using virtues language to acknowledge, guide and correct awakens the best within us. There is new science that shows we are biologically wired (oxytocin, testosterone and cortisol) to grow our virtues. This information and applications will be shared in the workshop. This is a highly interactive presentation that will inspire you to see the gifts of character in yourself and others. This workshop will awaken the virtues of confidence, assertiveness, trust and enthusiasm in the participants. You will gain knowledge and tools to begin applying now to make a positive difference in your classroom, life and community. Valerie Hess is the executive director of Brilliant Stars, Inc., a nonprofit agency working to expand The Virtues Project globally. Valerie is a master facilitator for the Virtues Project and travels around the country and internationally. She conducts workshops and training sessions for parents, educators, businesses and community organizations. Valerie is the co-owner of Virtues Village LLC, a product and service company. She brings 30 years of experience working with children and youth as a foster parent, day care provider, and administrator of three adolescent group homes and a transitional living program for youth. Terry Rahn is the co-founder of Regalos LLC a for-profit organization which provides education, training and materials that promote The Virtues Project and foster family unity. Terry is a master facilitator for The Virtues Project and travels globally conducting workshops and trainings for parents, educators and business organizations. She is also a registered nurse at her local community hospital. Terry’s objective in life is to be of service to the world by sharing and teaching the strategies of The Virtues Project. Terry has a Master of Arts in Education.

Introduction to Motivational Interviewing Presenter: Aaron Romens Focus: Child and Youth Development Audience: All Too often, one-on-one conversations with youth fail to create any real improvement. This training will explore the basics of motivational interviewing, a new conversational approach that can create real change. Aaron Romens is the executive director of Motivate Youth, a non-profit consulting organization based in Madison, WI. He has presented on motivational interviewing and other motivation strategies at NAA’s National Conference, as well as regional conferences in Pittsburgh and Wisconsin. He has worked for out-of-school educational organizations in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Ecuador. He has a BA in Journalism and a Law Degree, both from the University of Wisconsin.
