Compendium of American Poems (available August 30th). Approx. 50 pages.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students shall -

have knowledge about the major periods of American poetry in the 20th century have knowledge about the generic traits of poetry in contrast to other literary genres have knowledge about how poetry interacts with other art forms such as painting be able to identify basic poetic devices be able to discuss and analyze individual poems in oral and written exercises

Course contents -

the development of American poetry in the 20th century from early modernism to late postmodernism the historical and contemporary links between poetry and painting in depth study of individual poems and poets the study of poems and poets in wider cultural contexts training in poetry analysis and composition

Ways of working Teaching takes the form of interactive lectures and seminars. The learning platform Fronter is used for course information and guidance. The course requires regular and active participation in seminars as well as in work with exercises in and out of class.

Prerequisites: The 60 credit one-year foundation programme in English (Ă…rsstudium i engelsk) or its equivalent.

Course requirements To sit the examination a student must have completed one oral presentation in class and one written assignment within specified deadlines during the course. These requirements must be approved by the teacher no later than 2 weeks before the exam.

Assessment A take-home written exam spanning over 3 days, graded on a scale from A to F. A is the highest pass grade and E is the lowest pass grade. Both language skills and content must satisfy minimum requirements in order for the candidate to obtain a pass grade. Faculty responsible: Faculty of Education and Science
