Final Programme
Words of welcome Dear colleagues and friends, It’s our pleasure to cordially invite you to the 7th Europaediatrics Congress of the European Paediatric Association (EPA) and the Union of National European Paediatric Societies and Associations (UNEPSA), that will be held in Florence, Italy on 13rd-16th May, 2015. The programme for the congress, which is the highlight of the activities of the EPA/UNEPSA is being developed by the EuroPaediatrics 2015 Scientific Committee. This 7th biennial meeting will have an innovative format, with a mixture of plenary presentations by international child health experts and guideline sessions led by the European specialist societies which will give general paediatricians an opportunity to bring themselves up to date with the best evidence-based practice. The theme of sharing good practice will be continued in the more interactive personal practice sessions where leaders in their fields will present their approaches to the management of important paediatric conditions. It is crucial to underline the importance of the Europaediatrics2015: this event will be pivotal since the most prominent paediatricians will be gathering in Florence to share their knowledge and their competences. For this reason, the involvement and the collaboration of industries in the congress are fundamental. The theme of the conference will be “Learning across Borders and Languages”, a kind of educational “Médecins sans Frontières”. I hope you agree that an interactive format and the involvement of leading European Specialist Societies will contribute greatly to an attractive programme in Florence. With all the best wishes and looking forward to welcoming you in Florence.

LOCAL COLLABORATING INSTITUTION MEYER CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
The Meyer Children’s Teaching Hospital in Florence is one of the most dynamic pediatric hospitals in Italy as well as the world. It has 250 multi-specialty beds and is equipped with all of the pediatric medical and surgical specialties. The hospital has over 9,000 admissions per year and performs 8,000 surgeries, sees over 7,000 outpatients, and manages 45,000 emergency room visits. At a national level Meyer is characterized as a pediatric hospital with a very high level of specialization and is a reference center for a high level of pediatric complexity, attracting one patient out of four from outside of Tuscany and 7% from abroad. Special attention is dedicated at Meyer to children and their families. This special sensitivity can be noted in the architecture, which has been designed to avoid provoking any fear or stress in the little patients, as well as in the selection of the materials used, which are natural, warm, and biocompatible; choices made to create an ecosystem that is truly suitable for children and the promotion of their health. In this context, thanks to the support of the Meyer Foundation, special projects have been activated that are truly effective in reducing the pain and trauma of hospitalization: the dogs of pet-therapy, clowns in the hallways, informal performances by professional musicians, and many creative spaces set up by the staff of the playroom. Meyer is also deeply committed to research and innovation, for example through initiatives that award and support the best studies of its young researchers. A strong focus on scientific research integrated with clinical activity has allowed Meyer to become part of the global Children’s Hospital Association network and to forge partnerships with the two best pediatric hospitals in the world, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Boston Children’s Hospital. The close link between scientific research and patient care at Meyer is also demonstrated by its patents, which regard the serotyping of streptococcal pneumonia, the diagnosis of blood metabolites, succinylacetone detection, and screening of adenosine deaminase deficiency. Of special note, Meyer’s Pediatric Immunology Center recently received the prestigious recognition by the Jeffrey Modell Foundation for its research on primitive immunodeficiency.
LOCAL COLLABORATING INSTITUTION developing quickly in this context, and is establishing itself as one of the most dynamic pediatric hospitals in Europe. Today Florence’s pediatric hospital is a point of reference in Italy and abroad for healthcare and research in the pediatric field, while being faithful to – after over one hundred thirty years – that altruistic act with which everything began in the now distant 1884. What’s the proper way to pronounce “Meyer”? The founder of the Meyer Hospital left us a hint that we can use to settle, once and for all, the old dilemma of how to pronounce its name. In the act of donation to the city of Florence, Giovanni Meyer himself, who then became the Count of Montagliari, wrote that his last name was to be pronounced like the month of “May” - a clarification that with a little joke of history we leave to the documents of the time, because the Florentines, all the Florentines in over 130 years of history, have regardless pronounced it like the pronoun “my”.
A brief history The Meyer Children’s Teaching Hospital has its roots in late nineteenth-century Florence, a city that had recently lost its role as capital to Rome and that was in the midst of a great turmoil of change. It is in this context of innovation, in 1884, that one of the first structures in Europe dedicated exclusively to the care of children was founded - the pediatric hospital that the Knight Commander Giovanni Meyer dedicated to his wife Anna Meyer, who had passed away at a young age. This facility, later donated to the city, would come to be known as l’ospedalino (the little hospital) by the Florentines to indicate the affection that they felt toward this introduction of pediatrics to Florence. Until then, in fact, a child was considered to be a small adult and therefore hospitalized with them, a situation that Anna Meyer witnessed and was deeply troubled by. For this reason her husband created an institution that anticipated the evolution of medicine on an international scale, in line with the best ideas of the most advanced European countries. This hospital, which is completely dedicated to pediatrics, would become the training ground of several fathers of modern pediatrics. For example, physicians of the caliber of Prof. Giuseppe Mya and his significant studies on tuberculosis, and Carlo Comba, who was famous for his research in the infantile neurological field and for the diffusion of the diphtheria vaccine, which halved the mortality rate among hospitalized children. Immediately after the First World War, Prof. Cesare Cocchi contributed to the fight against tuberculous meningitis, making the Meyer Children’s Hospital quite well-known on the international scene. In 1995 the Meyer Children’s Teaching Hospital, with the Department of Pediatrics of the University of Florence, became an independent health institute of the National Health System following recognition of its role as a highly specialized pediatric institution, an honor that has been conferred to very few pediatric hospitals in Italy. In December 2007 Meyer moved to its new and modern home at Villa Ognissanti, on the hills of the Careggi neighborhood of Florence, a structure that is not only advanced but also respects the environment in which it is located. The European Paediatric Association (EPA) is a pan-European scientific association which is the Union of National European Paediatric Societies and Association (EPA-UNEPSA). The main objective of EPA-UNEPSA is to encourage scientific co-operation between not-for-profit National European Paediatric Societies/Associations and between European paediatricians working in primary, secondary and tertiary paediatric care in Europe, in order to promote child health and comprehensive paediatric care. Founded 35 years ago, it now represents 50 National Paediatric Societies and operates on a non-profit basis. Its General Assembly is made by the Presidents of the major national pediatric societies active in the Nations of geographic Europe, and currently represents more than three-quarters of all European countries, working closely with the major international organizations, including WHO, UN, EMA and the Council of Europe. Since its foundation in 1976 in the St Sophia Children’s Hospital in Rotterdam, Holland, in its role as prominent European paediatric organization, EPA-UNEPSA has typically encouraged education of patients, families and care givers by translating specialistic knowledge to generalists, and worked to improve the quality of paediatric patient care in all European countries including both member and non-member states of the European Union, by adequate clinical research and by implementing research into practice. A fundamental part of EPA-UNEPSA role as a pan European association of 50 member societies is to understand and embrace diversity, and to foster the exchange of experiences and cooperation amongst paediatricians in Europe, enabling the members of the national European pediatric societies and associations to exchange experiences and share best practices, in the spirit of “learning across borders and languages”. The programme has a number of sessions taking place, many of which run in parallel. Below is a description of various sessions taking place which can be attended by all specialties of all grades. PERSONAL PRACTICE SESSIONS These sessions are with an expert speaker sharing their views about how they manage a particular paediatric problem. Numbers are limited to ensure the sessions can be highly interactive. Advance registration for these sessions is essential. CLINICAL GUIDELINES SESSIONS Each session is organized in collaboration with an European specialty society. The Guidelines Sessions cover a range of guidelines issued by major European specialty societies and presented by their experts. The sessions will focus on key messages, implementation and audit, presented by experts involved in the guidelines development. There is no need to pre book – just come along to find out more about these evidence-based guidelines and take the opportunity to discuss the guidelines with those involved in their development. PLENARY SESSIONS Keynote lectures by leading experts, chosen to inspire as well as educate. Plenary lectures are designed to inform the general paediatric audience and stimulate discussion about what is new, important and relevant to their clinical practice. SYMPOSIA A wide range of topics will be presented and discussed during these sessions which will best serve the educational needs of attendees. In every symposium expert speakers will offer an update of new development and innovations in various areas of paediatrics. HOT TOPICS (3X5 SESSIONS) 3 different speakers discussing 5 different topics x scientific aerea (5 minutes each) allowing 15 minutes of debate with the audience (40 minutes total for each scientific area of the 3 sessions) SPECIALTY ORAL PRESENTATIONS The session is chaired by 2 experts who will present the group of abstracts in a given paediatric specialty and will make analytical, constructive educational comments. Presentation by the authors (5 minutes) are followed by comments and questions by the experts (5 minutes) PLENARY DEBATE SESSION (PROS & CONS) 2 speakers are involved in the lively debates. The format includes a significant allocation of time for interactive debates and questions from the audience to each panel of experts. Participants are therefore encouraged to take an active role in the discussions with televoting in a unique and open environment. Through these exciting discussions, key issues will be raised and provide participants with tailored recommendations regarding patient care.

“Diversity of child health care services in Europe” The symposium will discuss strengths and weaknesses of the child health care system in Europe, also debating possible future health plans. Its focus lies on making idiosyncrasies of national health care services in Europe understandable to those pediatricians working in other countries. Understanding why and how child health care services differ from country to country, may open the eyes of all European pediatric care givers and public health experts. Global information and learning across borders are a great opportunity, not necessarily having to result in unifying concepts or in giving up processes that are implemented successfully in another country. Instead, they should aim to avoid those unnecessary processes in child care that, unless abandoned, may be responsible for a poor outcome of child health. Often countries have many distinct regional differences; most significantly between northern and southern as well as eastern and western regions. When it comes to problem solving strategies, pediatricians must be aware of unavoidable cultural and historical differences which may influence the outcome of care. Even when assuming unlimited financial resources, different regional priorities might result in diverging goals. Participants: invited experts, presidents of national European pediatric societies and associations, and special guests. Open to all participants to the 7th Europaediatrics (participants will walk after the end of the symposium to the opening ceremony)

“The new Millennium Development Goals and the post 2015-development agenda in the European perspective: a challenge for Europe and the European Societies of Pediatrics” High-level United Nations panel has proposed the adoption of new Millennium Development Goals from 2015. The new goals will address important issues that are crucial for the populations of different geographical areas around the globe. The New MDG have emerged from the original ones and will provide a tool for the UN to set proper actions and concrete tasks, as well as responsibilities to be assigned to specific competent actors. This will help meeting civil society aspirations for inequality reduction, systemic reforms of global institutions, a more comprehensive view of poverty, and to promote adequate global health policies to resolve key health issues relevant for the populations around the world. The New Millennium Development Goals will likely be universal in character and, as such, they aim at influencing more affluent countries and societies, and being relevant to all countries in their local context. The workshop is also aimed at analyzing and discussing the social, political and economic implications of the MDG for Europe. In such perspective, this workshop will be extremely important for the European National Paediatric Societies and Associations to assess their responsibilities within the role that the each single European nation will be called to play locally and globally by the New MDG during the next years.

“The dilemma of international paediatric congresses” National and international medical congresses are an integral part of continuous professional development for health scientists and clinicians. However, recent scientific publications, have emphasized that medical congresses are becoming larger, more luxurious, and expensive, with a possible impact on their cost-benefit, and considerable concern was raised about their value or whether they are merely “a profit making enterprise.” This symposium discusses the future of international pediatric congresses in Europe and how they can better contribute to the education of pediatricians. Participants: paediatricians, delegates of European paediatric organizations, delegates of European paediatric specialty societies, delegates of national paediatric societies, delegates of Industry.
Chairs: L. Namazova, S. Lenton Teaching and learning during paediatric congresses S. Lenton (Council Member of EPA-UNEPSA and former vice-president UK Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health) (EPA-UNEPSA)

“The child’s rights to health” Translating principles into practice
ESPGHAN Session - “Learning the e-learning” (part 1)
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child came into force 25 years ago as the first human rights document focused solely on children. The articles of the CRC are concordant with the underlying precepts of pediatrics and public health. Yet, despite on-going changes in the social-ecology of health, more than a half-century of enlightenment as to the relevance of human rights to the health and well-being of children, and rapid advances in social epidemiology and the life course sciences-the principles of human rights, health equity, and social justice have not been integrated into health professional training. Neither have they been incorporated into standards for the delivery of health care, development of health systems, and generation of public policy. The symposium addresses the topic of child’s rights, with a specific focus on the child’s right to health.
The aim of this session is to introduce the audience of European General Paediatricians to the benefits of the e-learning program for continuing medical education, using the ESPGHAN platform based on guidelines as case history. The Interactive session will exploit tools developed from e-learning to show the efficacy of this type of training for PCPs.

APLS INTRODUCTION
APLS INTRODUCTION
This 2.5 hour course is designed to give those who have not undertaken life support training previouslyan introduction to the structured approach to paediatric emergencies. We have chosen to highlight this by presenting all of the components of a standard APLS course, i.e. interactive lectures, practical skill stations and simulations with a focus on emergencies in children. Candidates will be given the opportunity to prepare for the course with some of the relevant chapters from Advanced Paediatric Life Support: The Practical Approach 5th Edition and access to some of the on-line learning modules that have been devised for the standard course. Both the text and the on-line modules are in English. Access to these materials will be arranged by the Advanced Life Support Group in the UK. During the face-to-face course, candidates will have hands-on practice in the practical skills and simulations and these sessions will be delivered by a team of experienced APLS instructors from across Europe.
