7th Grade Language Arts Crabapple Middle School 2013-2014 Course Description: Seventh Grade Language Arts Seventh grade language arts continues to emphasize the integration of vocabulary, literature, reading strategies, composition, oral language skills, research and grammar. Literature, media and technology experiences become increasingly analytical as students study the elements of the short story, novel, drama, poetry, essay, autobiography, and other fiction and nonfiction genres. The emphasis on becoming strategic readers, critical viewers and effective communicators continues. Students learn to evaluate their own learning. The thematic approach invites students to discover the triumph and tragedy of human experience. Themes include universal concepts such as loyalty and camaraderie. Advanced Language Arts - Although the State of Georgia requires that all students learn the same Georgia Performance Standards, Advanced Language Arts explores these standards at a higher level and at an accelerated pace. The student is challenged to develop advanced communication skills; higher order and critical thinking skills; and creative thinking and problem solving skills. The Fulton County Schools Curriculum Department provides additional resources for parents regarding the learning objectives for the courses offered in the middle grades. Both the Middle Grades Curriculum Handbook and Learning Objectives resources per grade level provide detailed information. These may be accessed at http://portal.fultonschools.org/departments/academics/LearningandTeaching/Pages/Humanities.aspx. Textbook Information:

Classroom Procedures and Expectations: In order to ensure a positive learning environment, all students are expected to follow the “Husky How To’s” at all times. Project Achieve – Crabapple Middle School’s Recovery Policy Students are expected to master all standards as written in the Georgia Performance Standards, or the GPS. However, some students will reach mastery later than others. Therefore, Crabapple has created Project Achieve. Students will be able to replace a grade on a recoverable assignment for a better grade, or if the student does worse on the recovered assignment, he or she can keep the higher of the two grades. Any student can recover. Recovery will be teacher initiated for any student failing an assignment; students can initiate anytime they want to achieve a higher grade. No student will be penalized for striving to improve their grade. Written communication to parents regarding recovery options will be sent home. Students can only have one retake per task. Students are required to demonstrate at least 80% mastery on the recovery assignments before a retake is scheduled. Recovery should happen as soon as possible after a failing grade but can be up to 10 days prior to the end of the semester for yearlong classes and 4 days prior for quarter classes. Students will be able to recover tests, writings, and projects in their Language Arts classes. Teacher Contact Information: Teacher Name Allen, Denise Johnson, Diane
