9th GRADE PHYSICAL SCIENCE Teacher – Ms. Frazer

School year – 2010-2011

Textbook – Holt Science & Technology Physical Science, 2001 COURSE DESCRIPTION – Physical Science is the study of matter and energy. We will explore the two main branches of Physical Science: Physics (the study of different forms of energy and how these cause matter to move and change) and Chemistry (the study of different forms of matter and how they interact with energy). In the Physics portion of the class we will learn about things such as motion, machines, sound and electricity. In the Chemistry portion we will learn about things such as chemical bonds, reactions, and atoms. COURSE SYLLABUS – First quarter – Ch. 1 – The World of Physical Science & Ch. 2 – The Properties of Matter Ch. 3 – States of Matter & Ch. 4 – Elements, Compounds and Mixtures Ch. 5 – Matter in Motion **Science project – choose topic, do background research, form hypothesis OR Alternative project - two reports Second quarter – Ch. 6 – Forces in Motion Ch. 8 – Work and Machines Ch. 9 - Energy Ch. 20 – The Energy of Waves & Ch. 21 – The Nature of Sound ** Science project – plan experimental procedure, conduct experiment OR Alternative project – two reports Third quarter – Ch. 22 – The Nature of Light Ch. 23 – Light and Our World Ch. 17 – Introduction to Electricity Ch. 18 – Electromagnetism ** Science project – write final report, make display, Absarokee Science Fair OR Alternative project – two reports, make display, present at fair Fourth quarter – Ch. 11 – Introduction to Atoms & Ch. 12 – The Periodic Table Ch. 13 – Chemical Bonding & Ch. 14 – Chemical Reactions Ch. 15 – Chemical Compounds ** Rube Goldberg Machine Project REQUIRED MATERIALS – - pencil or pen, and paper - folder or notebook to keep notes, assignments - spiral notebook for current events journal - 3-ring binder for science project or alternative project
