ATLAN A new approach to substation engineering ATLAN provides a unique working environment that integrates traditional protection, control and measurement with the IEC 61850 architecture, merging in an unprecedented manner classical and advanced working methods. ATLAN allows designers to cover the whole engineering cycle, from the basic design to the very last detail, through a powerful and versatile set of tools and functions. ATLAN generates the conceptual logical model that guarantees the functionality of the electrical substation, integrating the IEC 61850 standard with traditional functions of Protection, Control and Measurement. The functionality of every design can be visualised at any time, as ATLAN has been devised to show the interactions between devices of different technologies. From the graphical design, ATLAN allows to automatically generate unified documentation for the IEC 61850 and classical environments.

Additionally, ATLAN allows designers to create the Basic Engineering project of the substation; and from that point to generate the level of detail required with ATLAN’s Detailed Engineering tool: New Intelligent (IED’s)

cycle.

ATLAN provides tools and functions to cover the full substation engineering cycle: from the single line diagram, through the definition and configuration of the several systems and IED’s in the installations, to the automatic generation of absolutely all the documentation and drawings of the whole project.

Productivity. The final substation design project consists of a single file that contains all the information of the project. All the drawings and documents can be automatically generated from that single file. Redrawing or repeating drawings form general schemes is therefore not needed.

Documentation and traceability. The documentation generated with ATLAN can only be modified through changes in the designs. The application facilitates the traceability of the different versions and revisions of the project. At the same time, the integrity of the documentation is verified by means of electronic signatures.

During the lifecycle of the project ATLAN permits to create lists, and schemes for control of changes (also known as reds and yellows). By means of ATLAN’s functionality for comparison of different revisions of a project, the lists of devices and connections to be added or deleted are automatically generated in each case.

Integration of technologies. ATLAN’s working environment combines traditional protection, control and measurement with the new IEC 61850 architecture. Also, the application guarantees at all times the integrity of the information. This allows avoiding costly errors related to omission or duplication of components and their interconnections.

Parameterisation of libraries. ATLAN’s libraries can be adapted to the specific rules of the companies, regarding symbols (graphical representation) as well as the generation of drawings and listings (formats, drawing boxes and sizes).

ATLAN

Functionalities Import/Export of data ATLAN allows users to export/import data in format as XML, DWG, etc., by means of data import/export assistants that avoid the costly and tedious task of having to re-introduce data every time, and make possible to re-use existing symbols. Also, it is possible to connect with PLC’s.

Dynamic simulation The validation of complex automatisms and Logical Functions becomes simplified by means of a simulation process that permits to achieve the desired behaviours during the design of components. ATLAN provides a logical simulator that any logical function to be simulated under any condition defined by the user. The simulation process can also include several related Logical Functions. Also, users can choose to carry out step-by-step or continuous simulations.

Knowledge documentation The way Logical Functions, automatisms and some especial protection schemes are implemented is evolving with the technology. The increasing capacity of IED’s allows a higher number of functions to be embedded. Diagram schemes no longer represent the functionality of the substation. ATLAN provides functionality for the standardisation of Logical Functions and for the documentation of the actual implementation.

Powerful graphic working environment Substation engineering is carried out using a full graphical interface. The design consists of objects that model the properties of substation real devices. Legacy IED’s can be modelled by using proprietary models, whereas IEC 61850 are defined by its ICD file.

Seamless integration of IEC 61850 IED’s At the present time, real substation design combines IEC 61850 IED’s with existent legacy devices in the installation. ATLAN provides the functionality required to work with different technologies, showing the interactions between devices of different technologies in such a way that the overall functionality of the design is clear and intelligibly shown. Logical connections, like those implemented with GOOSE messages, are graphically represented in the drawings. Configuration files are automatically generated from the graphical design.

Management and maintenance support Facilities such as wiring or signal lists, together with the documentation scheme of Logical Functions, clearly show the relation between functionality and real implementation. Thus, the role of every device and wire is completely defined.
