For February 3rd, 2014

A New Member Joins ADWA's Board & More! ADWA is thrilled to announce that Jackie Pearson has been appointed as an interim member to our Board of Directors! Jackie is an experienced member of the disability sector, serving in both front-line and supervisory/managerial capacities, currently with the Lo-Se-Ca Foundation in St. Albert. Thank you to all the applicants who applied for the Board vacancy. Your willingness to donate your time and experience to building our Association, and the professionalization of our sector, is very much appreciated.

We're also happy to announce that ADWA member Carol Lucas is the winner of the iPad Mini prize draw from our 2013 membership drive. We're working hard on several initiatives to connect disability workers, digitally, around the province, so it's definitely an apt prize to give out.

The deadline (February 15th) is upcoming to apply to serve on the new Family and Community Engagement Councils. The Councils are replacing the old PDD regional boards. This is a chance to bring the voice of disability workers to the table, and an opportunity to dedicate your time, knowledge and experience to help improve service delivery in Alberta. Nearly 5 years in the making, the next Self-Advocacy Summit will be held June 13 - 15 at MacEwan University in Edmonton. This event is FREE for Alberta self-advocates and those providing support to them. So what does this have to do with ADWA? Alberta's disability workers are the key to informing individuals about the Summit and helping them register and plan for it. If support is required for individuals to have a great Summit experience, it is disability workers who make that happen. The link to Summit information and the registration package on the AACT website is at http://www.albertaact.com/p/2009-selfadvocacy-summit.html. The Summit is a great way for front-line workers to find out about self-advocacy and how they can support it, as there will be many experienced allies to chat with and experienced self-advocates to identify what helps and does not help. Besides many great sessions to choose from on Saturday, Have-a-Say Sunday will give participants a chance to tell ACDS what support workers need to know and what training they should have, and tell PDD what they think about recent changes and directions.
