Coffin Fest Every year before Coffin Night, a street in Isla Huesos is closed to hold a festival to celebrate those who died but were not given proper burials — John Hayden and others whose coffins were lost in the Great Hurricane of 1846, which destroyed the island’s cemetery. Some say it also memorializes the people whose bones were found by the Spaniards in the 1500s, causing the island to be named Isla Huesos, or Island of Bones. Coffin Night An event held only on the island of Isla Huesos during the high school’s Homecoming. A coffin is constructed by the senior class and hidden somewhere on the island. The junior class then attempts to find the coffin. If they do so, they are allowed to burn the coffin on the fifty yard line of the school’s football field. This means the junior class has “burned” the seniors. If the juniors fail to the find the coffin, the seniors are said to have “buried” the juniors. Curry, Mr. Jeweler who looks at and seems obsessed with Pierce’s diamond; has heart attack when John appears to protect Pierce. D-Wing One of the sections into which Isla Huesos High School is divided. Only members of the New Pathways counseling program for “troubled” students are enrolled in D-wing. Looked down on by most “A-wingers.” Day, Henry Permanent member of the Underworld, ten years old, blue eyes, former ship’s boy on the Liberty. Dresses in 1840s garb. Double Dare Hannah Chang’s horse; given to Pierce after Hannah’s death, who donates it to a school for autistic children.

Endicott, Farah Seth Rector’s girlfriend, A-winger and cheerleader. Endicott, Mr. Farah’s father; doing spec development on Reef Key with Mr. Rector. Went to IHHS with Pierce’s mother, Seth’s father, and Uncle Chris Engle, Mrs. A woman who died and went to the Underworld and is waiting to pass on Fates Positive spirits (antitheses of the Furies). Not much is known about who/what they are, but the Underworld needs them in order to function properly. Flores, Mr. Rowdy student in IHHS school assembly Frank Permanent resident of the Underworld, assists John in loading passengers onto boats. Age unknown but probably late teens, early twenties, dark eyes, scar across face, black braided hair, tattoos around biceps of thorns; had been an able seaman on the Liberty; attracted to Pierce’s friend Kayla Rivera. Furies Evil spirits who’ve come back to seek revenge on John for where they ended up after passing on. Graves, Mr. Permanent resident of the Underworld, kindly older gentleman, had been surgeon on the Liberty, wears a top hat and long coat, blind. Hobbies include trying to make perfect batch of homemade beer. Dislikes include pestilence. Hayden brothers John’s three older half-brothers, lazy spendthrifts, each worse than the last. Hayden, John The tortured lord of the Underworld, permanent resident; in love with Pierce; six foot four; always dresses in black, deep, rumbling voice; wide shoulders and silver eyes; thick long brown hair; heavily scarred, has rough hands; 19 years old at time of death in 1846, making him 184 years old at time story opens. Likes include Pierce, Richard Smith, his horse, Alastor, his fellow Underworld residents, and poetry. Dislikes include his father. Hayden, Robert John’s no-good sea captain father, dead when story takes place. Captain Rob’s Rum is named for him. Hernandez, Officer Tough female police officer; brunette, helps to investigate the murder of Jade in Book 1. Comes after Pierce with a Taser in Book 2.

Heavily muscled, a bit older than John and Frank but younger than Mr. Graves, shaved head except for one long braid; had been bosun on the Liberty; colorful tattoo sleeves. Asian. Likes include tea and peace and quiet. Dislikes include fighting (unless forced to). Marzjak, Mr. Custodian at Westport Academy; walks into classroom after Mr. Mueller’s hand is crushed by John because he hears Mueller screaming. McNamara, Jennifer A classmate of Pierce. Mike Tattooed groundskeeper at IH Cemetery; possessed by Furies.His head is concussed by Pierce. Michaels, Father A priest Grandma wanted Pierce to meet at her mother’s welcome party. Mueller, Mr. Mark Math teacher and basketball coach at Westport Academy; gave free tutoring sessions after school; had affair with Hannah Chang; his hand crushed by John to protect Pierce.

Smith, Richard Isla Huesos cemetery sexton; older, elegantly dressed African American gentleman who often wears bow ties and straw porkpie hats; gold-rimmed reading glasses; he is the only living person on earth besides Pierce who both knows about the Underworld and has a relationship with John, and that’s because he’s an expert on death deities, an interest he shared with Pierce’s grandfather, Carlos Cabrero, but also because he once died (heart attack), and went to the Underworld, though he doesn’t remember it. Typhon Permanent resident of the Underworld, a large, wolf like dog that is loyal to John, slobbers a lot, has eyes that burn like hot coals. He is named after the Greek father of all monsters.
