ADDITIONS T O T H E M O L L U S C A FROM KAWERUA, NORTH AUCKLAND by Bruce W. Hayward, Margaret Morley, Jenny Riley, Nancy Smith and Glenys Stace Auckland Institute and Museum, Private Bag 92018, Auckland

SUMMARY Seventy new records of Mollusca (7 chitons, 41 gastropods, 22 bivalves) are added to the existing species list for the Kawerua area, on the west coast of North Auckland, bringing the total to 192 species (13 chitons, 125 gastropods, 51 bivalves, 3 cephalopods). These Kawerua records provide geographic range extensions for 21 species of mollusc. INTRODUCTION Hayward (1990) recorded 123 species of Mollusca from marine and freshwater habitats around the Auckland University Field Club Research Station at Kawerua, on the west coast of Northland, New Zealand (Fig. 1). This paper records additions to the list resulting from a three day visit and intensive intertidal search along the Kawerua coast by the authors in June 1993. Although the original list included records from along 8km of coast between the mouths of the Waipoua and Wairau Rivers, the additions all come from a 3km stretch from the Waiotane Stream mouth to the Ohae Stream mouth. New records and many of the existing records are now supported by voucher specimens in the collections of the Auckland Institute and Museum. NOTES

The Kawerua records of species marked with an asterisk (*) in the following notes appear to be extensions of recorded geographic ranges. Approximately 10 percent of the listed Mollusca are restricted to northern

190

New Zealand. These northern-restricted species (according to Powell 1979) are listed below. Additional records from the collections of Auckland Museum (AK) and Margaret Morley ( M M ) are cited where they extend the published range: Diloma (Fractarmilla) bicanaliculata *Fossarinarimata- previously recorded only from the east coast of Northland and Auckland (Powell 1979), but specimens are also known from Mahia Peninsula (AK). This is the first west coast record. *Thoristella oppressa - previously recorded only from the east coast of northern New Zealand from Whangaroa to the Bay of Plenty. This is the first west coast record. *Crassitoniella carinata - previously recorded only from the east coast of northern New Zealand, south to the Bay of Plenty. This is the first west coast record. *Rissoina anguina - previously recorded only from eastern Northland, as far south as Leigh (Powell 1979), but specimens have also been collected from Takapuna, Rangitoto, Waiheke ( A K , M M ) , Bay of Plenty and Lyall Bay, Wellington (AK). This is the first west coast record. * Anabathron (Scrobs) ovata - previously only recorded from the east coast of northern Northland and from the Three Kings Islands, but we have additional records from Great Barrier, Leigh, Waiheke ( M M ) and Kauri Point, Auckland (AK). *Anabathron (Scrobs) rugulosus - previously only recorded from Great Barrier Island, although specimens have also been collected from Tiritiri and Waiheke Islands ( M M ) . This is a large range extension. Stiracolpus ahiparanus - recorded by Hayward (1990), and previously recorded as restricted to the west coast of Northland and Auckland from Ahipara to Whatipu. We have seen specimens that extend the range south to Kariotahi, near Waiuku ( M M ) and to the east coast at Mercury Bay ( A K ) . * Trivia merces - previously recorded from the east coast of the North Island, and down the west coast as far as Ahipara. This extends its range south down the west coast. This is further extended by specimens in the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences collection from Pukerua Bay and Wellington Harbour (A. Beu, pers. comm.). *Buccinulum robustum - previously recorded only from east of northern North Island as far south as East Cape. This is the first west coast record. *Taron dubius - recorded by Hayward (1990), previously only recorded from east of the North Island as far south as East Cape. We have located unpublished records from M i l l Bay, Manukau Harbour ( M M ) and Nelson Harbour ( A K ) . ^Zemitrella fallax - previously only recorded from Tom Bowling Bay, near

191

North Cape, but we know of specimens from Cape Maria van Dieman, Bland Bay and Leigh ( M M ) . This is the first west coast record. *Philippia lutea - previously only recorded from the east coast of northern New Zealand as far south as the Bay of Plenty, but there are specimens from Hokianga in A K . This is the first published record from the west coast. *Odostomia takapunaensis - previously only recorded from the east coast of Auckland at Takapuna and Oneroa. This is a substantial range extension. *Finlayola lurida - previously only recorded from the east coast of northern North Island at Cuvier Island, but we have additional specimens from Great Barrier, Tiritiri, Whangarei Heads, Houhora and Manukau Harbour ( M M ) . Saccostrea glomerata - known from Kawhia around North Cape to East Cape. Plaxiphora (Vaferichiton) murdochi - recorded by Hayward (1990), previously only recorded from Otago Peninsula and the North Island west coast between Kawhia and Muriwai. Additional specimens are known from White Cliffs, Taranaki and Mt Maunganui on the east coast ( A K ) .

^Paratrophon quoyi cheesemani - recorded by Hayward (1990), restricted to west coast of the North Island and previously only known between Kawhia and Muriwai. *Cominella (Josepha) quoyana accuminata - recorded by Hayward (1990), restricted to west coast of northern North Island, previously known between Port Waikato and Muriwai, but now also known as far north as Matapia Island, Ninety Mile Beach (F. Brook pers. comm. 1990). *Cominella (Josepha) virgata brookesi - previously recorded from northern Northland from Whangaroa in the east around to Ahipara in the west. This record extends its range south of Ahipara. *Aphelodoris sp. is an undescribed nudibranch, previously noted from Ahipara (R.C. Willan, pers.comm.). The following seem to be the first published records from the west coast of the North Island of the following five species, although they have previously been recorded from the North Island east coast, Cook Strait and northern South Island: ^Paratrophon patens - previously recorded around the South Island and Wellington. *Alcithoe jaculoides - previously recorded from Northland to East Cape, but we have seen specimens from Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru, Manukau Heads and Ninety Mile Beach ( A K ) . *Sagenotriphora ampulla - previously recorded from east coast of Northland and Auckland and from Wellington, but we have an additional record from Kiritehere, south of Kawhia on the west coast ( A K ) .

192

Alloiodoris lanuginata - previously recorded from the east coast of Northland and Auckland and from Cook Strait, and we have a record from the Chatham Islands ( M M ) . *Philobrya munita - previously recorded from the Hauraki Gulf and Wellington, but we have additional records from Stewart Island, Auckland Islands, Chatham Islands, Southland, Kaikoura, Cape Maria van Dieman and Piha, west coast of Auckland (all M M ) . ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Department of Conservation, Waipoua, provided assistance with accommodation and access. Dr Richard Willan assisted with identification of the nudibranchs.
