Anaedus hawkeswoodi sp. nov. from Suriname (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Calodema, 251: 1-3. Abstract: Anaedus hawkeswoodi sp. nov. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is described from Suriname, South America. Key words: Anaedus, new species, Tenebrionidae, Coleoptera, Suriname.

Introduction During 1990, an undescribed species of Anaedus Blanchard, 1845 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) was collected from Suriname, South America, which is herein named after Dr T.J. Hawkeswood of Sydney, Australia as Anaedus hawkeswoodi sp. nov. The new species was collected at light. Anaedus ezzatpanahi Makhan, 2011 was the first species of the genus described from Suriname, A. meyer-rochowi Makhan & Hawkeswood, 2013 was the second described species and Anaedus hawkeswoodi sp. nov. is now the third described species. The holotype and paratypes of the new species will be deposited in the collection of the University of Suriname, Department of Entomology, Paramaribo, Suriname. Taxonomic description Anaedus hawkeswoodi Makhan, sp. nov. (Figs. 1-4) Holotype: Suriname, District Suriname, 5.8.1990, coll. D. Makhan. Paratypes: 32 specimens. Holotype description: Male. Convex, length 4.8 mm, width 2.05 mm. Head brown, length 0.7 mm,width 1.0 mm including eyes, with fine punctures on anterior side, between eyes with coarse punctures; clypeus truncate, with fine punctures, each puncture with a single brown seta. Eyes large, with coarse facets. Antennae brown, antennomeres 1, 3-11 longer than wide, antennomere 2 as long as wide. Pronotum brown, length 1.0 mm, width 1.6 mm, widest at middle, with coarse punctures, each puncture with a single brown seta. Elytra brown, length 3.0 mm, width 2.05 mm, widest at posterior side, with a rounded apex, and with coarse punctures, each puncture with a single brown seta. Legs brown, with brown setae. Male aedeagus: (Figs. 3-4) parameres short, with a long basal piece. Etymology: This species is named after the famous biologist from Australia, Dr Trevor John Hawkeswood (1956- ), one of the world’s greatest natural historians, who has published more than 430 scientific papers in botany and entomology and in many other areas of biological science in Australian and international journals. Dr Hawkeswood has also published an attractive and informative book on Australian spiders as well as a book on the Coleoptera of Page 1

Australia and has also produced the scientific journals Calodema and Spilopyra. Dr Hawkeswood has also discovered numerous plants and insects new to science, most of which he has described. More recently, Dr Hawkeswood has published new species of fossil beetles from Baltic and Madagascan amber. His work has been cited in Nature and Science and in most of the leading entomological and biological journals of the world (see www.calodema.com).

Comments: Anaedus hawkeswoodi Makhan, sp. nov. appears to be closely allied to Anaedus meyer-rochowi Makhan & Hawkeswood, 2013, from Suriname. However, the body of A. meyer-rochowi measures 10.0 mm long and is compressed (flat), while the body of A. hawkeswoodi Makhan, sp. nov. measures 4.8 mm long and is convex (rounded). The three Suriname species can be easily and clearly distinguished by their size and body colour (see key).
