ECOSYSTEM SERVICES IN AMAZON FOREST The loss of forest cover in tropical countries in recent decades has caused a great impact on biodiversity and ecological integrity of ecosystems and, consequently, reduced supply of ecosystem services.

Indigenous land – subsistence agriculture

Despite its great importance, the functions of these services, when related to the human wellbeing, are not well accounted in the creation of developing policies. For changing the current scenario it is necessary to give due weight for these forests.

Amazonia

Amapa State Forest of Amapa Module 4

Amazonia is a very important entity when talking about ecosystem services.

Agriculture settlements – agriculture and cattle

It supplies multiple ecosystem services for the human wellbeing in local, as well as in regional and global scales. In the context of global change, the fixation of greenhouse gases and maintenance of hydrological cycles were identified as services of great importance.

agriculture settlements

The State of Amapá contains more than 70% of its territory with preserved forests. Our main challenge now is to develop economically and keep the forest standing. The development policy of the current state is directed to develop on the border with French Guiana. Changes on current scenario of pressure on natural resources are expected, especially in areas with better road infrastructure. gold mining

The large extent of State Forest of Amapá (FLOTA/AP) - area of 2,369,400 ha – has great potential to provide ecosystems services. In particular module 4 of FLOTA/AP - border area with French Guiana.

ECONOMIC VALUATION OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

PROJECT OBJECTIVES • Establish the current state of the area • Analyze the dynamics of changes in natural resources of module 4 of FLOTA/AP • Build sustainable development scenarios for the next 20 years in the study area.

The project aims to indicate economic alternatives for land use adapted to local realities and, generate essential information to support public policies that promote conservation and sustainable use. It also aims to build scenarios of use and occupation of land for the next 20 years in module 4 of the FLOTA/AP in order to determine qualitatively and quantitatively the potential changes in ecosystem services. In addition, the project is applying and adjusting methods for diagnosis and valuation of environmental services in the Amazon region taking as an example module 4 of FLOTA/AP.
