I sure hope you were one of the 40 very LUCKY painters we had for our annual Mystery Paint-In for 2013, because we had a great time! I was there and I did. As you know the identity of the MPI teacher and the project is kept a secret and the teacher came in with a painted, paper bag over her head...it was hilarious…and then she was revealed to be...Linda McFadden from Murrieta. She really isn’t teaching much anymore but she graciously agreed to teach for us and to even design just for us the project for the day. It was a lovely grape and daisy design on a large Terracotta pot about 12” tall; it was beautiful. Jean Cooke and her band of Merry Little Helpers really put on a spectacular day for us. The raffles were so great and so many of them, we made over $900.00 for the day. And we got 3 brand, spanking new brushes too — a #16 Flat brush, a #3 round & a #1 liner brush. The food was sooo good also. This is one of our most wonderful events of the year. I want to thank Jean and her committee for all their hard work and efforts to give us a truly wonderful day. April will bring us Jack Ragland again; he is teaching us a wonderful landscape. He is a very talented artist and is not to be missed. He is not out there teaching all over the place and he really loves our chapter and we are thrilled to be hosting him again. I have to also mention again about Ros Stallcup coming in June. Her classes are filling up fast, so I hope you all sign up with her. It’ll be a great class to learn some of Gran’s Gardens painting techniques. Tell your painting friends to come and join us too…. before all the spots are taken. See you in April with Jack! Sue Bond

1st VP of Programs News: March Mystery Paint-In: Please join me in saying thank you to Jean Cooke, her MPI committee, and our wonderful mystery teacher, Bagatha Christie, I mean Linda McFadden. What a treat to paint a project that Linda designed just for us! The project was beautiful, the lunch yummy, raffles amazing, and the room full of happy painters. If you missed MPI, you really missed a wonderful day. Thanks again to the ladies who made it all happen for us. April Paint-in with Jack Ragland: There are still openings for members and visitors to take the class with this well-known Fallbrook fine artist. We are honored that so far we are the only tole and decorative art chapter that he is teaching. Please help us fill this class and take advantage of a wonderful learning opportunity. The following ladies have signed up and paid to attend: Karen Ortman, Cynthia Megill, Charlotte Hicks, Teri Hayes, Maureen Kleinman, Bobbie Koelsch, Elaine Cendali, Jean Cooke, Leslie Pilcher, Sandra Poehlman, Sheila Cox, Sue Bond, Sandy Lonnecker, Diane Jensen, and Donna Eledge.

Project Piece “Head’s Up:” We will not be pre-ordering the wood for the Maureen McNaughton piece “Tropical Fish” taught by Carol Ganzi in August. If you want to paint on the wood planter box with inserts, it runs about $40.00 plus shipping and can be ordered through Darla at www.turtlehollowartists.com (405) 203-0991. Carol suggests that you might consider painting it on the OS Tote (JS-27) available from www.creative-woodworks.biz (408) 923-5239. This is the same box that we painted the Lion and Unicorn design on last year. Maureen painted a new design “Above & Below the Sea” on the OS Tote recently, which was featured on the cover of the Decorative Painter Magazine, Issue #4, 2012. You might reference your copy of the magazine to see if you like how the fish pattern looks on the tote. Other ideas include painting on coasters, small canvas squares, or anything from your stash. Looking forward to painting with all of you soon, Charlotte Hicks

Seminar Chair “Come paint with us” during our June Ros Stallcup Seminar. This is your chance to learn Ros’ tips and techniques she uses in all her “Gran” books. We are so lucky to have her visit us here on the West Coast for 3 days. It’s only the early part of March and classes are about half full! The surfaces are priced very reasonably. Support PHP and sign up soon with the form in this newsletter. Invitations to this seminar are now being extended to other Southern California chapters. Marilyn Dixon & Sue Bond Garage Sale News The PHP garage sale will be going on full force during the April Paint-in. We’ll have lots of new books for everyone to “shop through”. There are many used “inexpensive” brushes to use around the house or with grandchildren projects. Paints are reduced also. Pattern packets are only .50 cents each. What a deal! Don’t forget if you go through your painting things, we love donations to PHP. Also if have some items you want to sell, put your name and price on each one and put them out for everyone to see. Newsletter Editor What a HUGE success the Mystery Paint-in raffle was. Joanne Schutz worked really hard to make this a special event. She contacted every vendor that was coming to the Las Vegas Convention and asked if they would donate for our Mystery Paint-in. I even saw her on the trade show floor scouring the booths looking for prizes. I don’t know how many trips she had to make back to her car to get everything in and then transport back to San Diego. I’m not sure if she ever did get to buy anything for herself in Vegas. Joanne certainly outdid herself and we as a chapter are so lucky to have her as she made it all happen. When you see Joanne, express your thanks and appreciation for all her hard work. Karen Krause, Newsletter

I saved Brenda Stewart’s best hint for last — cleaning your water basin. She places clean water in the basin, adds about 1/2 cup Murphy’s Oil Soap and microwaves to within boiling. Lets it sit for awhile then rinses. Some of the gunk and/or paint may need a little tootbrush help but for the most part, it comes off easily. I suggest not putting it in the microwave but bring water just to a boil on the stove top, pour in your basin with the soap and let it sit for awhile. It’s worth a try. I have several I need to clean. Signing off for now, Sandy Garcia
