Missing Cases:
Slipped Epiphysis - All new cases of disease aher fixaIon. Perthes’ Disease – All new cases presenIng to definiIve care clinician (i.e. may be diagnosed 6 months ago but taken some Ime to be referred to the person making decisions about management).
There is occasional confusion about what ‘missing cases’ are in the email. We search HES and use a trainee network each month to idenIfy cases, and match this to those that are submided. We noIfy you of any that appear to be missing, and ask you to search PACS by date (i.e. Image intensifier films by of surgery) to check missingness!
FOLLOW-UP REMINDERS
How to follow-up cases -
The monthly e-mail will remind you about who is due follow-up. To follow-up cases, please go into RedCap (the link from www.BOSS.surgery using a mobile phone/ tablet computer is easiest). Rather than clicking “add new case”, select the paIent’s number (i.e. 12-1) and then “3 month f/u”.
“HELP PLAN THE NEXT NIHR TRIAL – PTO…”
The Medial Epicondyle Trial… Feasibility BONE Network Audit Trainees throughout the UK are audiIng the last 3 years of medial epicondyle fractures – this is to determine: (1) The incidence (2) The level of equipoise (i.e. how much agreement is there about treatment regimens). PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR TRAINEES TO GET INVOLVED Everything needed (including an audit protocol and tables) is on the BONE collaboraIve (part of BOTA) website.
What outcomes do YOU care about? Help us to decide the outcome by determining the Core Outcomes needed in the trial. More than 40 internaIonal surgeons, paIents and physios have already done this – add your voice now! Previous papers have reported over 50 outcomes of importance (which is clearly a bit mad!). We need you to help us make sense of this.

InternaDonal Trials Groups Mirroring Trials The BOSS is working with the IMPACCT internaIonal trials collaboraIve, and the CORTICES US-collaboraIve. The idea is to put similar grant applicaIons into NIHR/ NIH and CIHR. With this the power for studies can be improved, and results can be quickly replicated. We are standardising outcomes and protocols to enable meta-analysis following trial compleIon – add your voice to the outcomes standardisaIon – see above!

[email protected]. Hospital Transfers If a paIent moves hospital aher being enrolled in the study - for whatever reason, then please contact (
[email protected]). Please include the paIent study ID number, and the new hospital. (Remember – we are not allowed to know paIent names and full DOB etc). We will liaise with the new hospital to ensure that follow-up is possible. Sending Radiographs. We would prefer radiographs via disk or the IEP link (beder image quality for studies). IEP link is live.
Data Queries There are some quesIons that may be asked of you if key pieces of data are missing, or seem erroneous. This will be built into the monthly email in future, but for now if research nurses can login to RedCap via a PC (not a tablet/phone) then data queries will be displayed. Spam E-mail We have been made aware that some people have had SPAM e-mail that looks like it is from ‘BOSS’. The University of Liverpool IT team is addressing this. The e-mails are not truly from the BOSS address (they are pretending to be so). Please do not click on the links. If you have any concerns about the authenIcity of any of the e-mails, contact
[email protected]. Accruals Please note NIHR CRN accruals will only be awarded to paIents who fulfill the study entry criteria (i.e. a SCFE that has been fixed, or Perthes’ Disease for the person making definiIve decisions about management).
