LSC . MACHINES

Choose Silca Save time and money cutting bit keys with the Silca Idea

The Silca Crown - the most accurate, reliable and easy to use machine for tubular keys

Most locksmiths cut bit keys with manual machines with the average key taking 5 - 10 minutes to cut. We suggest looking at automating the process with the Silca Idea.

Supplied with the universal T15 jaw for holding virtually any tubular key with a diameter 6.00 mm 12.5 mm, the Silca Crown is unique in that it rotates the original and blank key in synch (to 6 or 8 predetermined positions, or it can free rotate) making the process of duplication a breeze.

Offering to bit keys what the Unocode offers for regular keys, the Idea can cut by code, or by copy, and can decode, fix bent bits, allow bit interpolation and more - all for a lot less than you might think. Reduce time taken to cut bit keys Guaranteed accuracy you can rely on Swap levers and rekey with ease Popular Ross cards EXCLUSIVE onboard

LSC Code maker functionTO allows your own cards to be created Free up your most skilled trades people for other jobs, give faster service to your customers, and increase profits - Trust in Silca to deliver outstanding results.

Just rotate the original and press the cutting lever and the original will be lined up with the tracer and the cutter depressed into the blank. Tubular keys are increasing in popularity again as people look to add security to letter and meter boxes and other small item storage areas. Some of the lower cost machines aren't accurate enough for the improved quality tubular locks on the market today, nor can they hold such a wide diameter of key securely. LSC has a great discount available on the Crown 15 this month, talk to your Account Manager because the price is just too hot to print!

LSC . AUTOMOTIVE

Automotive solutions Nissan intelligent key solutions by Richard Hoares

One of the most common makes of vehicle on New Zealand roads today is Nissan and they are generally pretty straight forward when it comes to programming keys. However, lately we have been seeing a huge amount of Nissan imports fitted with Intelli smart keys. Nissan Note, Tiida, Wingroad, El Grande, Micra, just to name a few. I’m sure many of you have seen them. Intelli keys are a type of proximity remote with an emergency override key that is inside.

inside the head. As the key is inserted into the twist ignition you can hear an audible click; this is the solenoid retracting as is detects the programmed chip. Only a cut and programmed key will allow the ignition to turn, a cut NON programmed key will not. Your AD100 or MVP is fully capable of programming these keys and remotes to the vehicle in lost key situations. Most are found under the ASIA menu and can be programmed with NATS 5 CAN (PROX). Often the job of the locksmith is to only programme the mechanical keys to the vehicle as dealer remotes can be very expensive. Unfortunately a standard NSN14T14 or MH clone-able head will not be suitable as the twist ignition prevents the key from entering the ignition completely. LSC now has a helpful solution for this in the form of a couple of special override key blanks for use with Diagnostic Programming.

The ignition has a “twist” or “switch” type cowling over the keyway.

Part Code:

BDSNSN14IB

Part Code:

BDSNSN14OS

BDSNSN14IB This is a replacement emergency blade that will fit into an original intelli remote. It comes chipless and has a slot to insert a T14 carbon chip.

When a programmed remote is within a set distance a small solenoid inside the ignition will retract, allowing the twist ignition to be turned without the use of a mechanical key.

BDSNSN14OS This is a half and half shell thin enough to slide completely into the twist type ignition. It contains a location slot for either a carbon T14 chip or a glass T7. These are useful if the customer does not require a full intelligent remote and is happy using a mechanical key to open and start the car.

The override key is used if the battery in the remote goes flat or is faulty. The key actually has an ID46 (T14) transponder

LSC . SMITHS LOCKSMITHS

Industry feature 133 years in business and still going strong

In this issue, we have great pleasure in featuring one of New Zealand’s oldest established locksmiths, Smith’s Locksmiths of Ponsonby, Auckland. We have to go back to 1880 and four generations of Smiths to pick up the beginning of the story. H.W.Smith the elder started the ball rolling with the embryo business in Wakefield Street, Central Auckland. In those days, Auckland wasn’t big enough to keep a locksmith busy all the time, so Smith took in knife sharpening as well, a practice that carried on for many years. They were so well-known for it, Tailors used to come from all over Auckland to get their cloth cutting shears sharpened. The business continued to grow and for some 88 years, Smiths remained in their rickety old Wakefield Street premises until they got notice to move

out. The old family home and business was to be demolished to make way for a new State Fire Insurance building, so it was onwards and upwards for the Smith family and they re-located to a new shop above the Town Hall in Queen Street.

The business continued to go from strength to strength as the City of Auckland grew and their business grew with it. The business continued to go from strength to strength as the City of Auckland grew and their business grew with it. In July 1988 it was time to move again and Smith’s secured premises in busy Ponsonby Rd., where they continue to trade to this day. In September 2012, disaster struck. Sometime after closing up one Friday night, a pipe leading to the hot water

cylinder in the roof sprung a leak and water poured through the ceilings and completely flooded the shop and workshop causing severe damage to stock and equipment. Not ones to be daunted, they carried on business from one of their vans parked outside whilst the shop was being gutted, dried out and re-furbished. The Ponsonby location has suited the Smith’s traditional style of locksmithing, with its huge population of Victorian and Edwardian villas and cottages providing regular requests for older style rim and mortice lock repairs and replacement keys, some of which have to be crafted by hand. Modern technology has not daunted them, however. They have kept right up to date with the latest electronic code machines and have a flourishing key production and master keying business, as well as a busy retail shop selling all the usual and some not so usual, security hardware and safes. Current owner, Pat Smith, pictured below right alongside Manager Evan Bradshaw, is semi-retired now, but still plays an active part in the business. His old dad, Arch Smith is still alive and turned 100 on St. Patrick’s Day. A fascinating family with an equally fascinating family history. Long may they continue.

Training and development South Island Open Day 2013

MLAA training seminars

On Friday afternoon May 17th and Saturday May 18th, LSCNZ will be hosting an Open Day in Christchurch.

On the 21st and 22nd February, LSCNZ provided the venue for the MLAA Automotive Training Seminar held at the LSCNZ Poland Road Training Facility.

A comprehensive agenda is planned, which will include training sessions for Lishi and the ABUS 14 restricted key system, product demonstrations for Borg, ABUS padlock range, ABUS DIY CCTV System, NRL and Rugby specialty keys, BDS and Lucky Line and demonstrations from guest speakers as well. It should prove to be an interesting and informative two days and light refreshments will be served on both days.

Transponder cloning was demonstrated and George Rose from TTK gave a very comprehensive demonstration on Advanced Eeprom programming and ECU re-setting.

LSCNZ’s impressive training facility at the Poland Rd premises. Day one focused on Master Keying and day two was devoted to Automotive Training. Master Keying theory was covered comprehensively, and the very complex subject was challenging to all the participants. The glossary hand-outs will prove to be invaluable tools to any locksmith.

To secure a place at what will be a well-attended function, please email your intention to attend to [email protected] or phone Dawn on (09 444 5117). Remember, numbers are limited.

Automotive training included live demonstrations on several donor vehicles by Jeremy Phillips and Richard Hoares. These included various car opening techniques, and extensive training with Lishi tools.

LSC’s Richard Hoares looks on as Michael Dunne of City Locksmiths, attempts to open the door of a Ford Territory, using the Lishi HU101 2-in-1 pick. Michael’s attempt was a success. All-in-all, this was a highly informative seminar and we would like to thank George, Richard and Jeremy for sharing their skills and knowledge with the wider locksmith community. Further seminars were held in March in Christchurch and Hawkes Bay which were both as well received as the Auckland seminar, so more are planned for the future.

LSC . WORKSHOP

Workshop corner ABUS Diskus with Plus keyways

LSC’s Pat Quinn explains the importance of educating customers about the proper use and maintenance of ABUS Diskus Plus padlocks. Over the past few months we’ve had a few ABUS Diskus Plus padlocks returned to us as allegedly faulty. An initial inspection gives the impression that there is an intermittent malfunction with the keyway, but in actual fact, there is no fault, as such. The problem arises when the key is not fully inserted into the cylinder. Those of us who are familiar with Plus keyways will know this, but the average retail customers who are not familiar with them will not know and instead of re-inserting the key and trying again, they will just keep turning the key back and forth and when the lock continues to fail to open, they will get frustrated and say that the lock is faulty. Even worse, they may even snap the key off, which makes key replacement difficult. It only needs the key to be 1mm, or less, from being fully inserted and the discs will not align correctly with the cuts in the key and the lock will not open. The cause of the key not going in fully is a mixture of user error, wear on the key cuts and dirt. The keyway has a dust cover, but this does get broken off occasionally, which allows dirt and grime to get into the cylinder. Even if the cover is not broken off, users often don’t bother closing them. A squirt of WD40 into the cylinder will nearly always resolve the problem.

The cause of the key not going in fully is a mixture of user error, wear on the key cuts and dirt. If the cause can be attributed to wear on the key cuts, then a new key should be cut to code. The key code is supplied on a card with the lock from new, but if customers don’t have the necessary machine to cut Plus Keys, then LSC can do them provided we have the original code or an original key. So, the moral of this story is – pass on your product knowledge to the customer at point of sale. Make sure they understand that the key has to be fully inserted into the cylinder before turning and that the cylinder should be cleaned with WD40 occasionally. Also, emphasise the importance of looking after the code card. If the customer loses the card and the keys, then the lock is basically history. It will save you and your customer grief in the future if they are aware of these facts when they purchase the lock.

What’s happening outside the workshop New beginnings

Well, the first quarter of 2013 has seen some interesting new businesses open their doors to the public in the Auckland and Waikato region. The new Armstrong franchise in Hamilton has a very high-profile location on Hamilton’s busy Te Rapa Rd and the eye-catching new corporate livery will certainly attract attention. So too will the very striking colours of Wasp Security in Brown’s Bay and The Locksmiths in Pukekohe, both of which have some innovative touches that make them stand out from the crowd. Armstrong Te Rapa Wow, what a location this is! It’s the latest Armstrong franchise situated on one of Hamilton’s busiest trunk roads, Te Rapa Road. Franchisee Craig Andrewartha, formerly of the Armstrong Greenland branch, has decided to move south and see what the busy city of Hamilton has to offer. Good luck Craig – the place looks great.
