Are you a parent who says . . .

“I’d rather visit a dentist than teach math to my high school age child” . . . or, a parent who loves to teach math? Believe it or not, there is a way to become Parent #2. Painlessly, and at a Reasonable Cost. And, YOUR “student” will not only learn math, but learn to enjoy math, and lose any fear of math he or she might have. Indeed, you might even learn some math too. Here’s how. There are two very wise old math professors who have created a “solution” for the teaching of math to high school students that is vastly superior to any program available today anywhere at any price. You could send your student to an expensive private school or an elite public school and still NOT achieve the results you want for your child, that you WILL get from this revolutionary new math program. They are Dr. George Simmons, and Dr. Delbert Hane, aka “Dr. Del”. Dr. Simmons wrote a book that we believe is the very best math book ever written for high school students. Its name is: Precalculus Mathematics in a Nutshell: Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry In 119 pages Dr. Simmons presents all of the Geometry, Algebra, and Trigonometry any student will need to proceed on into calculus. In fact, we doubt any conventional high school math courses cover this material as completely and comprehensively as Dr. Simmons does. 1

For example, his derivation of the formula for the volume of a sphere using Cavalieri’s Principle is a tour de force. Just ask any high school math teacher how they are teaching this topic. Or, look it up in whatever book you are teaching from. There are many such examples in Dr. Simmons’ book. Dr. Del taught math at all grade levels from 8th grade through graduate school for twenty years as a student/tutor/teacher/professor. He was praised by his students as the best math teacher they ever had. They learned to love math and really enjoy it, as a game. Then Dr. Del taught topology and functional analysis (necessary for quantum theory) from another book by Dr. Simmons, Introduction to Topology and Modern Analysis, when Dr. Del was teaching advanced mathematics at an engineering school in the 1970’s. It turns out that Dr. Simmons has written excellent books on calculus and differential equations too. So, he certainly knows what is truly important for a student to learn in precalculus mathematics in preparation for more advanced mathematics. After teaching Modern Analysis, Dr. Del discovered these other books by Dr. Simmons. Dr. Del immediately realized how wonderful the Precalculus Mathematics in a Nutshell: Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry book was. Unfortunately, Dr. Del had by this time gone into business and left academia. He has subsequently privately tutored a few students using it, and has given away several copies. Dr. Del has actually been engaged in a variety of businesses over the last three decades. These included several training companies. You may visit: www.qpi.com/resources to get a sense of these. Dr. Del has taught a wide variety of subjects to adults in an industrial setting. In the last couple of years he has taught what he calls Practical Math for employees of a large company. It turns out that he can teach a person everything he or she will need to solve almost any practical everyday math problem in about twenty hours.

Dr. Del’s Practical Math has been delivered as a three day workshop (for $5,000) and is also available in a CD ROM format ($147), and in an on-line presentation as a series of video lessons ($47). You may visit www.zetaofs.com to learn all about it. And, get a free introductory course to get started. Interestingly enough, Dr. Del never met Dr. Simmons, but nevertheless considers him the best math teacher he has ever known. Most mathematicians are not very good math teachers. And, most high school math teachers don’t know very much math. It’s not really their fault. They are the “victims” of a pretty poor math ed system. Recently, some home school teachers approached Dr. Del for help. The first thing Dr. Del advised them to do is have their students take his Practical Math course. They can purchase the entire course including Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry online for about $50. This course will give any student a solid foundation in math for use in the real practical world, and serve as a good launching pad for further math education. Perhaps, more importantly for some . . . It will get them over any fear or dislike of math, and it will build their self esteem and confidence in their own abilities. All in about twenty hours of their time. Pretty amazing? Some students will just stop here. That’s just fine if they aren’t going on into science or engineering. They will be well served in whatever practical field they might enter. Of course, those wishing to go on into science or engineering or college will need more math. In this case . . . Dr. Del recommends they next study Dr. Simmons book Precalculus Mathematics in a Nutshell: Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry. Additionally, Dr. Del has created several video lessons on more advanced topics that students will greatly benefit from and that are not taught in ordinary high school courses, even in the best schools.

For example, he teaches students about what are called Complex Numbers and their extreme importance in understanding such subjects as advanced trigonometry. Complex numbers are indispensible in studying engineering and science. They should be studied even before calculus and differential equations. This is a major gap in the standard math curricula in our educational system today. But, first Dr. Del recommends the student study Dr. Simmons book. Dr. Simmons teaches many topics and includes derivations (proofs) that Dr. Del does not cover in his Practical Math course. Therein lies a challenge for the student and his teacher. Dr. Simmons book, as great as it is, is difficult for most students to study just on their own. And, unless their teacher is pretty good at math the teacher is just as bad off as the student. Soooo . . . . Dr. Del has agreed to offer a math program based on Dr. Simmons book. This program will consist of three courses in Geometry, Algebra, and Trigonometry. Each course will use Dr. Simmons book as the text. There is an interesting reason Dr. Del has agreed to do this. He has always loved to teach students these things. Students almost universally learn to love math, enjoy math, and lose all fear of math when they learn from Dr. Del. The problem has been historically that it is impossible to reach very many students in a conventional classroom environment. In fact, that is one reason why Dr. Del left academia to engage in business for three decades. But, today all is changed, thanks to several modern technologies that Dr. Del uses in many of his businesses. Dr. Del will be using these various modern technologies to achieve these objectives.

In the Practical Math course Dr. Del uses a $10 scientific calculator, the TI 30XA, to remove all the drudgery from solving math problems. This course would not be possible in any reasonable amount of time without the calculator. To an oldtime math teacher, the modern calculator is a kind of miracle. Now to deliver the Precalculus courses Dr. Del will be utilizing a variety of modern technologies. It will involve the Internet, computers, Skype, a Webcam, and recording technologies. Here’s the bottom line. A few students will actually take the course from Dr. Del in real time via the Internet utilizing Skype. Dr. Del will teach these courses just like he would do it in a class room or in his home at his Kitchen Table to a group of students. Interactively with a Socratic technique. The lessons will be recorded, and edited when necessary. Then these courses will be available to an unlimited number of students into the indefinite future at a very reasonable price point to be determined, but including free for truly poor students. Dr. Del will follow Dr. Simmons book pretty closely. But, occasionally he will supplement it with additional materials. In particular, he will present complex numbers and relate them to trigonometry and some algebraic topics, e.g. the quadratic equation. Finally, Dr. Del will offer students a very conceptual course in calculus and differential equations. We won’t discuss this too much in this message. But, suffice it to say software tools like Mathematica have revolutionized the way calculus and diff eq should be taught. Dr. Del can teach you the important concepts of calculus, derivatives and integrals, and the most important theorem in the history of mankind, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, in a few hours. Then, a tool like Mathematica does for calculus what the calculator does for practical math. It solves all calculus problems and differential equations very quickly and easily. So, that’s about it.

You, as a parent and teacher, now have access to an incredible resource to teach your students math in ways never before imagined. You and your students will have to experience it to believe it. Fear and loathing of math will be a thing of the past. Math is a wonderful “game”. It’s more exciting than any ordinary games. And, it’s very powerful in understanding many things in our lives and work. You, the parent and teacher, can enjoy watching your child learn and thrive with math. You might even want to learn along with him or her. And, now here is a message directly from Dr. Del for all Home School Parent/Teachers and Students, especially students.

A Message for Home School Parents and Teachers, and especially Students.

MATHEMATICS “What YOU need to know to SUCCEED.” Category 1. Mastery of Mathematics yields confidence, enthusiasm, high self esteem, and, perhaps more importantly, the ability to pursue subjects in science, engineering, technology, and other quantitative subjects. Category 2. Unfortunately, many students, and even teachers, have a fear of, dislike for, and other negative emotions regarding mathematics for a wide variety of reasons beyond their control. The traditional approach to math education is the genesis of these negative attributes. The reason for this is a long complicated story, whose roots go back many decades. That’s a story for another time. But, for NOW…. 6

Fortunately, there is a way for virtually any student or teacher to get into Category 1. It is pretty ‘revolutionary’ and for many ‘hard to believe’. But, just imagine what this could mean to you and your students IF it is true. To prove it you will have to invest about twenty hours of your time spread over one or two months. The Key is to first learn enough math to solve practical everyday problems that arise in virtually all walks of life. This means learning the right portions of algebra, geometry and trigonometry, PLUS how to use a scientific calculator to perform all the actual numerical calculations. Not all of the algebra, geometry, and trigonometry taught in typical high school courses. Much of that (Dr. Del estimates 80%) is unnecessary for actually solving practical math problems. Then, AFTER you are firmly entrenched in Category 1, you will be able to tackle the traditional courses with the help of Dr. Del. Who is Dr. Del? Glad you asked. Meet Dr. Del, on the next page.

I’ll even give you the ten dollar calculator you’ll have to have for the course. My Practical Math course will help you build confidence in your abilities to understand and do math, if that is a problem for you. It is great for anyone who has had a bad math experience in school, or is afraid of math, or has developed distaste for math. The Practical Math course does not include much of the material (80% estimated) that is commonly taught in most math courses in high school, which are essentially preparing the student for college or some math exams. The Practical Math course only includes material necessary for solving typical practical problems encountered in virtually all walks of life. It includes the relevant topics from Algebra, Geometry, and Trig you’ll need, plus how to use a scientific calculator. That said, the Practical Math course is a great foundation for future additional math training or courses. My Practical Math course is a really good way to prepare for a comprehensive high school math curriculum for those preparing for science and engineering and college. The Practical Math course also should be of value for math teachers and help them improve their content. For many years I earned my living as a math teacher. I believe this course will be of great value and aid to help any math teacher improve their teaching of math. I have great respect and empathy for math teachers at all levels and have helped several of them over the years. If that is not the case for you I insist you tell me and I will refund any money you have paid me. When it IS the case, I will ask you to tell others and help me spread the word. Share your experience with others. My mission is to help as many people as possible become mathematically “literate” to improve their life. And, to help math teachers improve their teaching of math. Please accept my best wishes for your future success. Dr. Del If you would like to discuss math or this program call me at my private line: 812-332-8179 But, first please visit www.zetaofs.com Many of your questions should be answered there. But, if not, by all means give me a call. Also, you should take my Free course on the calculator first too so you know how I teach. 10

And now for some final thoughts. If by chance you don’t like my course on the use of a calculator or can’t learn from it, then I’m sorry, but there’s not much I can do about it. What you see is what you get. That’s me and the way I teach. I teach best at the “Kitchen Table”. I will say the Simmons course will be more interactive with the students than the Practical Math course, since no students were involved in those videos. In any event, my emphasis is proper content and an informal approach to teaching. I am not trying to entertain. And, I certainly am not trying to impress some teacher or mathematician. My audience is only the student. The only results that count are how well the student understands the math. And, how he or she reacts psychologically. Content is far and away the most important consideration. Then, an informal friendly presentation is critical to put the student at ease and to facilitate his or her learning and confidence. For example, I make a lot of careless errors as many of us tend to do. Math is a “contact sport” and anyone will make a lot of mistakes. The important point is to check your work and catch and correct your mistakes. So, I don’t edit them out. And, I don’t follow a tight script. I want the student see me make careless mistakes, and then correct them. I want the student to emulate this behavior. I firmly believe this is the best way to help the student gain self confidence and avoid any feeling of failure. Nothing succeeds like success. Mistakes are to be embraced. They are a natural and unavoidable part of “doing math”. It means you are doing something and learning too. 11

Of course, if the answer is really important, then you always want to check your work and be sure to correct your mistakes. Humor, Fun, and Mistakes are all important components of doing math. But, have no illusions. Content is King. You really must teach the right material to achieve whatever your objectives are. This will become very obvious if and when you take my courses. Unfortunately, there is a tremendous amount of “crap” on the Internet and in many textbooks too. And, the poor student has no way of knowing what is “crap” and what is the right stuff. I will probably discuss many of these issues with parent/teachers via Webinars and a Forum in the days to come. If you are seriously interested in teaching your child high school math I urge you to seriously look at my materials. I invite you to call me: 812-332-8179 or email me at [email protected]
