What is Art Deco? In 1925 in Paris at the Exposition Internationale Des Art Decoratifs a new artistic Style of working emerged and was swiftly embraced in both Europe and across the atlantic in America. This new style made use of Expensive modern materials but had the hard edged look and motifs of ancient Egyptian and Aztec styles. Art Deco became the favoured artistic style for new Buildings, cars, paintings, furniture, posters and ceramics. Its popularity is still evident today.

TASK ONE: Learn more about the art deco style by producing a double page spread that looks at examples of Glass, Metal, Architecture, Vehicles, graphics and jewellery. You will be shown a presentation, take some notes to help you think about what shapes and forms are typical of art Deco. This double page spread needs to be adorned with an Art Deco Border. You need to include one ‘collaged’ item in the DPS.

What is the Graven Idol? The Graven Idol in question was part of the altar built in front of the Golden calf by the israelites at the foot of Mount Sinai. When the israelites fled Egypt they crossed the red sea and travelled for three months until MOSES climbed Mount Sinai to receive the TEN COMMANDMENTS from God. One of the ten commandments was that no graven image should be made or worshiped and when Moses returned to the foot of Sinai with the ten commandments he found that in his absence his followers had created a False god to worship in the shape of a Golden Calf. He smashed the ten commandments and had the Calf melted and forced them to eat it! There was another smaller graven idol in the altar that was quickly broken down into four pieces in secret by a pagen sect who carefully hid their treasure! The pieces became known as the graven idols.

owners. In 1924 Indiana Jones discovered the secret of the Graven Idols and began a quest to re-unit them. The journey took him around the world and he encountered some strange characters.

By the end of the year after a series of adventures the four graven idols where once more united and placed together for the first time since they were first broken up and placed on show in Paris at the Exposition internationale des art decoratifs. The graven idol was seen by 4000 people on the first day of the show but then it disappeared!

It was this one viewing that inspired much of what came to be known as ART DECO.

Task Two: Design the cover of the ‘Book of Ting’ Using only the written information above and your research into Art Deco you must design the cover of the ‘Book of Ting’. You will have to IMAGINE what it might have looked like based on your knowledge of art deco borders, patterns and designs and you should fill a page. This need only be done as a pencil drawing and if you employ a rotating pattern you might only need to design 1/4 of the book fully!

Task Three: Make the ‘Book of Ting’ Using cereal packet card or thin mountboard you must turn your own book cover into a relief version of your design. This can be spray-painted gold and decorated with various fake gems or painted ones! Remember to carefully read the information about the book; whilst everyone’s books will look different there are some basic design elements that must be followed.

Task Four: Design and Make The statuette You need to pick one of the two statuettes to design and make in clay. The statuettes have been said to have inspired Lalique’s car hood ornaments and each have similar features. You can use the design template For Goodegg’s Sword hilt on the last page to help you begin if you get stuck, but your growing knowledge of Art deco will probably enable you to work straight into your book with your own ideas. Design the model for homework and make it in class.

Task Five: Draw, make and decorate the Amulet of Khan The design process should involve colour and you should try to create various surfaces and textures as described below in the background information about the amulet. You will use card/shape depressions in clay and casting techniques to create the amulet which will be spray painted and then adorned and embellished.

In the late 1920’s Art deco buildings were being raised all over the world but rumour has it that the four pieces of the graven Idol went to Chicago with a famous American politician. In just a few years as the most famous Art Deco buildings like the Chrysler and Empire State buildings were being completed, America was to encounter a disaster! Do you know what this disaster was? Was it...

The A ‘ mulet of Khan’ needs to be designed by you based on the information given. This is just a worksheet to help you with the process of casting, use your own design when you complete yours. You will need to create a cardboard section to press into the clay as shown on the left. This was made with mountboard, cut with a craft knife and glued together using evostick woodglue.

B

First you will need to roll out some clay nice and flat on a board. I used a CD to press the cardboard template in (a), then cereal packet card to create a 10cm high border (b). I pushed the clay around the edges to make the whole thing stronger and more water-tight and at this stage I used the cheese wire to cut the rolled clay from the base. Then I poured the plaster into the mould I had created. (c)

Let the plaster dry, remove the surround and carefully cheesewire the base once more - take it easy - you can break the whole thing at this stage
