OCT. 10, 2009-JAN. 10, 2010 Thirty handmade, one-of-a-kind custom motorcycles will be presented in the Art of the Chopper exhibition at the Appleton Museum of Art of Central Florida Community College from Oct. 10, 2009, through Jan. 10, 2010. Art of the Chopper is the first comprehensive collection of motorcycles explicitly created as contemporary art and curated for exhibition. This unique exhibition of two-wheeled, mechanical sculptures balances flamboyance and minimalism and presents motorcycles as both art and artifacts of American culture. Each motorcycle is mounted on a pedestal and accompanied by photographs and display panels featuring information on the bike’s artist/builder such as Indian Larry, Mike Brown and Rick

F rom the director It gives me great pleasure to introduce Ruth Grim, our new curator of exhibitions at the Appleton Museum of Art. Ruth is a perfect fit for the museum and its collections. She has a solid background in art history and many years of curatorial expertise at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach. Her love for 19th century art, which is the strength of our fine arts collection, will serve us well. We are looking forward to her developing many exciting shows relating to and focusing on our own collections. I invite all of our members to take the opportunity to welcome Ruth to our family and to visit the Appleton Museum’s upcoming programs and special exhibitions. As mentioned on Page 1, our major exhibition of the fall will be the Art of the Chopper, a presentation created by Guest Curator Tom Zimberoff of San Francisco. This is the first time these 30 custom motorcycles – choppers – are being displayed in an art museum and presented as fine art objects. We hope all of our visitors will enjoy this very special and unique opportunity to see Americana in its wildest form. As always, we thank you for your support and interest.

Recent events Summer 2009 In Review The summer heat didn’t slow down the fast pace of exhibitions, special events, programs and trips at the Appleton Museum during the last few months. From June through August, museum members and guests enjoyed two major exhibitions that showcased art and artifacts from the Appleton’s permanent collections; Playing Around At The Appleton was a display of whimsical and contemporary art, and the Aesthetics of Power exhibition featured military weapons and ceremonial artifacts. Presented in the Appleton’s Balcony Gallery was Urban Bloom, the ceramic sculptures of local artist Meagan Chaney, and that was followed by a showing of the museum’s recent art acquisitions in an exhibition titled Welcome Home. The Appleton’s Trips ’N’ Tours program escorted guests on two one-day coach visits to the Museum of Fine Art in St. Petersburg, plus a visit to the local studios of metal smith Jack Klahm and stained glass artist JoAnn Jancik. The Appleton also offered two art camps over the summer. During the first camp, children studied contemporary 20th century art movements and then created their own artwork, and in the second camp students researched oldtime radio shows, and produced and recorded their own original program Above top: Local artist Meagan Chaney greeted guests at the summer that was broadcast in opening of her Urban Bloom exhibition in the Appleton’s Balcony Gallery. late August on WOCAAbove bottom: The closing of the Aesthetics of Power exhibition in August AM/1370. was highlighted by a flag lowering ceremony conducted by the Francis Marion Military Academy Color Guard.

T he art of giving Donor Spotlight

Upgrade to the Director’s Circle

Mr. Armand Brunet knows the importance of supporting the arts. His recent Charitable Gift Annuity is a first for the Appleton Museum of Art. Mr. Brunet’s gift provides him financial support as the annuity’s life-income beneficiary. Annuity gifts for the Appleton are made possible by, and backed through, the CFCC Foundation. The contract provides a specified income paid quarterly based on the age of the beneficiary. A portion of each income payment received may be taxfree. Transferring certain assets through an annuity may also help you avoid capital gains or estate taxes. Mr. Brunet had this to say about his gift, “I think the Appleton offers an important cultural experience in Central Florida that we need. The value of the cultural experience that the Appleton provides is why I chose it for my gift.”

We know you understand that community is more than just a place to live. It’s about quality of life and everything it takes to make our community the best it can be. The Appleton contributes to the life, culture and economic well-being of our Central Florida home. Art helps build our community and it takes our community to build art. It is through the support of our members that we are able to offer world-class exhibitions and meaningful art education programs. That’s why we invite you to upgrade your membership at the Appleton Museum of Art. Director’s Circle members receive additional benefits, such as membership in the North American Reciprocal Museum Program, exclusive Director’s Circle receptions, single-admission passes and memberships for family or friends, behind-the-scenes tours, catalogs from traveling exhibitions, and the opportunity to serve on special museum committees. The Director’s Circle begins at the Friend level ($100) and includes Associate ($250), Fellow ($500), Colleague ($1,000) and Partner ($2,500). If you are interested in upgrading your membership or joining at a Director’s Circle level, please contact Colleen Harper at [email protected] or 352-291-4455, ext. 1831.

Appleton Museum Director John Lofgren remarked, “We are so excited that the Appleton Museum of Art is the recipient of this…our very first gift annuity. It will help us develop a better foundation for future operations and program opportunities for our growing museum.” If you would like more information about gift annuities or other deferred giving options, contact Development Officer Pamela Zeljak at 352-291-4455, ext. 1294, or [email protected].

Volunteer and Docent of the Year 2008

Trips ’N’ Tours Presents

The Appleton is fortunate to have so many wonderful volunteers giving their time and energy, and we are proud to announce the selection of Mary Pappas as Volunteer of the Year and Betty Tomlinson as Docent of the Year for 2008. Pappas is a familiar face to the Appleton’s many visitors and began volunteering in 2000. During 2008 she logged in more than 200 volunteer hours assisting guests in the gift shop and helping the museum staff during special events… and always with a smile.

OCT. 22 “Private Art Collection at the Raymond James Financial Center, Tampa Bay”

Mary Pappas, Volunteer of the Year 2008, with Appleton Volunteer Coordinator Cara Johnson (left) and Museum Educator Korene Wilbanks.

Tomlinson is a retired teacher whose extensive travels and 16 years of teaching in Europe have provided her with a unique understanding and appreciation of art and history, both perfect qualities for a docent. She has come forward many times to help out with last-minute tour requests for groups of adults or school field trips. Betty Tomlinson, Docent of the Year 2008.

Want to be an Appleton Docent? Docents provide guided tours and expert interpretations to groups visiting the Appleton Museum. To become a docent, a volunteer must complete a course in art history and a specialized study program of the Appleton’s art collections. If you are interested in volunteering for this rewarding and exciting position, please contact Appleton Education Coordinator Korene Wilbanks at 352-291-4455, ext. 1613, or e-mail [email protected].

The first floors of each tower are devoted primarily to Florida artists with the light-filled lobby showcasing Duncan McClellan’s dramatic glass sculptures and vessels.
