ABOUT PETER. V. BRETT Peter V. Brett went to the University at Buffalo, where he studied Dungeons & Dragons, fencing, and girls. Somehow, he also managed to earn a BA in English with a minor in Art History. Following college, he managed a comic shop before going into medical publishing and contented himself with writing books he never hoped to sell. In June of 2007, his hard work and perseverance paid off, as he sold his 4th novel, The Painted Man, and in October of 2007, he left his day job to pursue writing full time. 

The Painted Man: Demon Trilogy 1

The Desert Spear: Demon Trilogy 2

Eleven-year-old Arlen lives with his parents on their small farmstead, half a day’s ride from the isolated hamlet of Tibbet’s Brook. As dusk falls upon Arlen’s world, a strange mist rises from the ground promising a violent death to any foolish enough to brave the coming darkness; for hungry demons materialise from the vapours to feed. When his life is shattered by the demon plague, Arlen is forced to see that it is fear, rather than the demons, which truly cripples humanity. In the small town of Cutter’s Hollow, Leesha’s perfect future is destroyed by a lie. Yet in her disgrace, she becomes the guardian of dangerous ancient knowledge. Orphaned and crippled, young Rojer takes solace in mastering the musical arts of a Jongleur, only to learn that his unique talent gives him unexpected power over the night. Together, these three young people will offer humanity a last, fleeting chance of survival.

Continuing the impressive debut fantasy series from author Peter V. Brett, The Desert Spear is book two of the Demon trilogy, pulling the listener into a world of demons, darkness and heroes. The Deliverer has returned, but who is he? Arlen Bales, formerly of the small hamlet of Tibbet’s Brook, learnt harsh lessons about life as he grew up in a world where hungry demons stalk the night and humanity is trapped by its own fear. He chose a different path; chose to fight inherited apathy and the corelings, and eventually he became the Painted Man, a reluctant saviour. But the figure emerging from the desert, calling himself the Deliverer, is not Arlen. He is a friend and betrayer, and though he carries the spear from the Deliverer’s tomb, he also heads a vast army intent on a holy war against the demon plague! and anyone else who stands in his way.

Rides a Dread Legion: Demonwar Saga 1

At the Gates of Darkness: Demonwar Saga 2

A Kingdom Besieged: Midkemian Trilogy 1

The first book in a brand new series by the master of epic fantasy, Raymond E. Feist. Midkemia now faces a new danger. A lost race of elves, the taredhel, have found a way across the universe to reach Midkemia. On their current home world, these elves are hard pressed by a ravaging demon horde, and what was once a huge empire has been reduced to a handful of survivors. The cornerstone of taredhel lore is the tale of their lost origins in the world they call simply ‘Home’, a place lost in the mists of time. Convinced that Midkemia is that place, they are coming to reclaim it. But before long, Pug and the Conclave realise that it’s not necessarily the elves, but the demon horde pursuing them where the true danger lies. And hanging over Pug always is the prophecy that he will be doomed to watch everyone he loves die before him!

The conclusion of the bestselling Demonwar series, which began with Rides a Dread Legion. Recent events have devastated the Conclave of Shadows; the discovery of the demon horde on the heels of the taredhel invasion of Midkemia, the threat of the star elves themselves, and the terrible personal cost paid by Pug and his family. But grieving must wait. At a deserted fortress in the Valley of Lost Men, the Conclave’s agents witness horror beyond their imagination, orchestrated by a familiar enemy. But Belasco’s motives are as yet unclear. The Conclave must regroup and discover the true meaning behind the chaos seeded by the evil magician if they are ever to find a way to stop the destruction of Triagia before the demon horde even arrives.

The original black Magician, Pug, and his motley crew of agents safeguard the world of Triagia, in the first book of the last ever Midkemian trilogy. The Darkness is coming ... The Kingdom is plagued by rumour and instability. Kingdom spies in Kesh have been disappearing. Information has become scant and unreliable; but one thing appears clear. Dark forces are on the move ... Since Pug and the Conclave of Shadows enforced peace after the last Keshian invasion, the Empire has offered no threat. But now factions are rising and Jim Dasher reports mobilisations of large forces in the Keshian Confederacy. As the men of the West answer the King’s call to muster, Martin conDoin – left as caretaker of Crydee Keep – will suddenly be confronted with the vanguard of an invading army. Massive events are about to unfold, events which threaten the future of all human life in Midkemia…

ROBIN HOBB

The Rain Wild Chronicles 2: Dragon Haven Read by Jacqui Crago

The first book in a two part series set in a world populated with dragons, magical ships and unforgettable characters. Guided by the great blue dragon Tintaglia, these are the first to make the perilous journey up the Rain Wild River to the cocooning grounds in generations. People are changed by the Rain Wilds. One such is Thymara. Born with black claws she is fascinated by the return of dragons. Leftrin, captain of the liveship Tarman, also has an interest in the hatching; as does Bingtown newlywed, Alise Finbok. But the creatures which emerge from the cocoons are a travesty of the powerful, shining dragons of old. The dragons claim an ancestral memory of a fabled Elderling city far upriver. But Kelsingra appears on no maps and they cannot get there on their own – and there are many unknown perils on the journey to a city which may not even exist!

The dragon keepers and the fledgling dragons are forging a passage through the uncharted and treacherous waters of the Rain Wild River, supported by the liveship Tarman, its captain, Leftrin, and Alise Finbok, who has escaped her cruel marriage in Bingtown. They are searching for the mythical city of Kelsingra, hoping to find a safe haven away from the society that has rejected them. When a vial of dragon blood can earn a man enough gold to last a lifetime, there may be some in the party who see the growing dragons as more valuable as body parts than whole and alive. But it is the Rain Wilds themselves – mysterious, unstable and ever perilous – that may provide the deadliest danger, one that will push them all to the very brink of survival in the concluding part of The Rain Wild Chronicles.

A Game of Thrones: Book 1, Parts 1 & 2 of A Song of Ice and Fire

A Clash of Kings: Book 2, Parts 1 & 2 of A Song of Ice and Fire

A Storm of Swords: Book 3, Parts 1 & 2 of A Song of Ice and Fire

The first volume in the hugely popular and highly-acclaimed cult fantasy series. There is passion here, and misery and charm, grandeur and squalor, tragedy, nobility and courage. Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun. It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lusts and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men ... all will play A Game of Thrones. Winter is coming…

The Iron Throne once united the Sunset Lands, but King Robert is dead and his surviving brothers are set on a path of war amongst themselves. At King’s Landing, the head of Lord Eddard Stark rots on a spike. In Dragonstone, Robert’s brother Stannis has declared himself king, while his other brother Renly proclaims himself king at Storm’s End – and Eddard Stark’s 15-year-old-son Robb wears the crown of the north at Winterfell. A comet in the night sky, red and malevolent, the colour of blood and flame, can only be an omen of murder and war. And a white raven has brought word from the Citadel itself, foretelling summer’s end. But winter will be the biggest enemy. From beyond the Wall the undead and Others clamour for freedom, and from beyond the sea the Dragon King’s daughter hatches her revenge. Robb Stark will be exceedingly lucky to reach adulthood.

The third volume in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy A Song of Ice and Fire continues this exotic and mesmerising saga. The Seven Kingdoms are divided by revolt and blood feud, and winter approaches like an angry beast. Beyond the northern borders, wildlings leave their villages to gather in the ice and stone wasteland of the Frostfangs. From there, the renegade Brother Mance Rayder will lead them south towards the Wall. Robb Stark wears his new-forged crown in the Kingdom of the North, but his defences are ranged against attack from the south, the land of House Stark’s enemies the Lannisters. His sisters are trapped there, dead or likely yet to die, at the whim of the Lannister boy-king Joffrey or his depraved mother Cersei, regent of the Iron Throne. And Daenerys Stormborn will return to the land of her birth to avenge the murder of her father, the last Dragon King on the Iron Throne.

Bloodthirsty, treacherous and cunning, the Lannisters are in power on the Iron Throne in the name of the boy-king Tommen. But fear and deceit are in the air: their enemies are poised to strike. The Martells of Dorne seek vengeance for their dead, and the heir of King Balon of the Iron Isles, Euron Crow’s Eye, is as black a pirate as ever raised a sail. Across the war-torn landscape of the Seven Kingdoms, Brienne the Beauty (thus named in mockery of her great size and strength) seeks for Sansa Stark, having vowed to protect Sansa from the wrath of Queen Cersei, Tommen’s power-hungry mother. Meanwhile apprentice Maester Samwell Tarly brings a mysterious babe in arms south to the Citadel from the cruel frozen north where the sinister Others threaten the Wall ... 26 CDs • OCD 571 • 978-0-85735-599-7 • Playing time: 33hrs 48mins

As George R. R. Martin’s magnificent epic continues, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance. In the east, many are seeking Daenerys, last scion of House Targaryen, who rules as queen of a city built on dust and death. Among them the dwarf, Tyrion Lannister, who has escaped King’s Landing, wrongfully condemned to death for the murder of his nephew, King Joffrey. To the north lies the great Wall of ice and stone. Eddard Stark’s bastard son Jon Snow is 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, but he has enemies both in the Watch and beyond the Wall, where the wildling armies are massing for an assault. On all sides bitter conflicts are re-igniting, played out by a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves. The tides of destiny will inevitably lead to the greatest dance of all ...
