1 Sep 2012 ... Lutheran hymnody. As we move forward with all of the changes at First Lutheran, I would sincerely ask for prayers for a smooth transition.
First Things First Lutheran Church of Brookings, SD Volume 13 Issue 4 August and September of 2012

Greetings from Intern Michael Buller Greetings First Lutheran, My name is Michael Buller, I prefer to be called Michael, and I am looking forward to joining you from the fall of 2012 to fall of 2013. I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself to you. I’m 29 years old and am originally from the St. James, Minnesota which is approximately two and half hours away from Brookings. I am the second child Intern Michael Buller and fiancée Erika. of Emory and Linda Buller. The church where I was baptized and grew up in was Augustana Lutheran Church, which was originally a Scandinavian church – even though I am not exactly Scandinavian (but this can be our little secret). Augustana was an excellent congregation for me and they provided me with support and encouragement. Augustana had a vicarship program that lasted a little over a decade. Several of these vicar interns were influential characters in my life. I first felt a call to ministry when I was 16 years old. My pastor wanting to affirm these feelings and took me all the way up to Luther Seminary. I honestly felt discouraged after this experience, the amount of time and education needed to get to Luther seemed too much for me. I lost touch with this call for several years and found myself discouraged and even lost at times. I have come to understand this time in my life as a period of doubt that I am deeply thankful for. It was through this time in my life where I came to understand and experience a small sample of the depth, love and grace of God. What really brought everything together is when I realized my faith in Christ was a gift from God that I received freely at the moment of my baptism. Just knowing that I was loved by God simply just because was freeing, even liberating. My journey to Luther seminary and ultimately to First Lutheran’s front door was by no means a direct path. I moved to the Twin Cities at the age of 19 initially pursuing a degree in audio production. These first few years away from home gave me the freedom to test my wings and explore the big unknown world. I changed my course of direction and began to slowly pursue my education for an Associate in the Arts degree while working different full time jobs. (Intern cont’d on page 7)

A NOTE OF THANKS FROM PASTOR PAM I find it best to take the “short and sweet” approach at this time, since I could literally go on an on about my thoughts and remembrances of my ministry here at First Lutheran. From the day I began serving here, January 1, 2001, you welcomed me with open arms and hearts. You have invited me into your lives and welcomed me into sacred and holy places. We have been through intense experiences together and laughed and prayed with one another in times of both great sadness and immense joy. God has blessed me truly beyond all measure by having placed me here to serve Him. Words do not exist for me to express how incredibly grateful I am for your trust and love. As I go from this place, I will take you all with me in my heart, and know that the love I have for you will never fade. Please keep me in your prayers as I wait on the Lord to guide me. I have no idea what lies ahead for me, but it will have to be pretty great to top this!! I will continue to live in the Brookings area on our acreage with my husband Tod and daughter JoAnne, and trust that our paths will continue to cross in various and wonderful ways. May God continue to bless each and every one of you, bless this church, and bless the ties that bind our hearts in Christian love.

Please join us for a reception honoring Pastor Pam in the Mission Coffeehouse on Sunday, August 26th between services. Beginning August 26th! Sundays 8:30 a.m. Traditional Festival Service 10:30 a.m. Contemporary Praise Service

WORSHIP MUSIC COORDINATOR PAT ANDERSON

ORGANIST MARY WALKER

Last month you received a letter informing you of my new position as Worship Music Coordinator at First Lutheran. First, let me say that as a member of First Lutheran for six years, I have enjoyed the many music offerings Dr. Canaan brought to the worship services: varied repertoire of choral music, instrumentalists, and organ music. He will be greatly missed by all. With a grateful and humble spirit, I will do my utmost to ensure that worship services will continue to glorify God, and music groups of all ages will have a chance to offer their musical gifts for worship. I will be scheduling groups for Sunday worship, as well as assisting in choosing liturgical settings and hymns, and occasionally playing the organ. You may be interested in knowing my qualifications for this position. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Northern State University, where I majored in piano performance. In 1996, I received my Masters degree from South Dakota State University in Curriculum and Instruction. I have been a music educator for over thirty years, having just retired this past year. As a church musician, I have directed adult and middle school choirs, handbell choir, played the organ/piano for services and assisted in music selection for worship. It would not be an exaggeration to say that I have an extensive knowledge and appreciation for the liturgical service and Lutheran hymnody. As we move forward with all of the changes at First Lutheran, I would sincerely ask for prayers for a smooth transition.

We wish to welcome Mary Walker, a gifted piano and organ instructor from the SDSU faculty, who has consented to play the organ for us on Sunday mornings at the 8:30 am service.

AN UPDATE ON THE YOUTH GATHERING AND UPCOMING HIGH SCHOOL MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES After spending a week in New Orleans, I could have stayed for another week of the Gathering. We had a wonderful journey and endless opportunities to encounter God. If you’re sensing that I’m being vague, you’re right. You can learn more about the trip by visiting the First Lutheran Church website and facebook page and joining us on September 9th when the youth will help lead the worship services and share more about their experiences. I also encourage you to ask the youth and adult leaders about their trip whenever you run into them. In addition to the experiences, memories, and photos from our time in New Orleans, some of the principles used at the Gathering will also find their way into our high school ministry program. Ministry opportunities will fall into three categories: Practice Discipleship, Practice Peacemaking and Practice Justice. Events that encourage learning, knowledge, and discussion fall into the Practice Discipleship category. Fellowship and advocacy events fall under Practice Peacemaking while service projects and giving would be Practice Justice activities. The three faith practices provide categories for ministry elements we already have and remind us that what we do in the church is practice for the ways we are called to encounter and live our faith in the world. To further explain the ideas behind the practices and give parents a chance to meet me and/or get to know me better. Parents and high school students are invited to join me in the Mission Coffeehouse at 7:00pm on September 5th or between services on September 9th in the Mission Coffeehouse Meeting Room. I’ll tell you a little about myself and introduce you to our high school ministry opportunities. This fall we will also begin building ministries focused on college students and young adults. More information regarding those ministries will be available on the church’s web page and facebook page. If you are interested in sharing your gifts, having some fun and/or generally being a part of the high school, college or young adult ministries, please let me know! Journey to Discipleship will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Faith Explorers will be held on Sunday mornings from 9:40 – 10:20 a.m. Journey to Discipleship will begin: Wednesday, September 12th, at 6:00 p.m. Faith Explorers will begin: Sunday, September 16th, at 9:40 a.m. If your child would like to enroll in either Journey to Discipleship or Faith Explorers, please contact Anne Werpy at [email protected] or call 692-6251.

FALL CONFIRMATION CLASSES TO BEGIN With summer concluding and school starting, it is time for Confirmation classes to begin at First Lutheran. We will be holding a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade parent/youth meeting about this year’s Confirmation on Sunday, August 26th at 11:45 am. 6th, 7th, 8th graders will begin Confirmation classes on Wednesday, September 12th at 7:00 pm. 9th graders will meet on alternate Sunday evenings beginning September 9th at 7:00 pm. This meeting is for both the parents and youth. If your child would like to enroll in Confirmation, please contact Anne Werpy at [email protected] or call 6926251. 6

We are currently in need of two new Confirmation Mentors. You could be exactly who we are waiting for! Our Middle School youth are vibrant, fun and eager to learn. During Confirmation our students learn about how the tenants of our Christian and Lutheran faith applies to our daily life. Each Mentor has about 6-8 youth who they mentor, guide, and pray for. The relationships that our youth develop with their Confirmation Mentors are not only long lasting but also offer our youth a safe place to ask questions about their faith. We meet Wednesday nights from 78:15 pm beginning in September. Please prayerfully consider serving as a Confirmation Mentor. For more information contact Pastor Nyla Schoeld at 692-6251 or [email protected].

(Intern cont’d from page 1) My life took an unexpected change while I was working for a small over the road trucking job. I never drove 18 wheelers, but I got to experience a large chunk of the lower 48 states, driving straight trucks, cube trucks and large delivery vans. During that year I got the alone time I needed to really look deep within my heart and ask the question, what do you want to do with your life? The answer was that I needed to pursue my bachelor’s degree. That fall of 2007 I enrolled at Augsburg College for a degree in Business Administration. After my first year at Augsburg I felt more and more drawn to religious studies. The affirmation I received from professors and peers gave me the push I needed. I graduated from Augsburg in May of 2010 with a Major in Religion and a minor in Philosophy, a very proud moment in my life. I really am looking forward to spending the next year getting to know you. I have included a photo of myself and my fiancée Erika. We both are becoming pastors. Erika will be interning at Grace Lutheran in Dawson, MN.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FAITH EXPLORERS AND JOURNEY TO DISCIPLESHIP We are seeking Teachers and Tour Guides for Faith Explorers and Journey to Discipleship, our Christian Education programs for children who are in Preschool through Fifth grade. If you like working with children and are interested in helping them on their Faith Journey, then this is a wonderful opportunity for you to use those gifts! Please contact Anne Werpy at: [email protected] or call the Youth and Family Office at 6926251 for more information. Please join us for a fun and exciting year! Journey begins on Wednesday, September 12th at 6:00 pm! Faith Explorers begins on Sunday, September 16th at 9:40 am!

On Sunday, August 26th, we will have a special blessing for everyone returning to school this fall. Students, you are invited to bring your backpacks as a visual reminder of your calling as students. Teachers, you are invited to bring an item symbolic of your calling as a shaper of young minds and lives - maybe a textbook, or grade-book, or something that helps you remember your calling. There will be a back-to-school blessing at both services. We invite you to join us on the 26th as we remind both teachers and students of their callings, and invite them to enter the year surrounded and encouraged by God's blessing and presence. 7

THANK YOU, ALYSSA! We would like to say THANK YOU to Alyssa Graphenteen for her dedication and service to the children and families of First Lutheran Church. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, August 26 at 9:30 am and plan to attend a meeting in the Parlor to celebrate our accomplishments and to envision what the future holds for the talented youth (grades 612) who want to be involved in performing arts opportunities (choir, drama, & tone chimes choir) for the upcoming year. What we’d like to find out is who’s interested in performing arts programs at FLC and when to schedule rehearsals. This will be an opportunity for students and their parents to have some input in deciding what programs will be offered and when they will be scheduled. This is for all interested students (who will be in 6th-12th grades this fall) and their parents! Bring your ideas and calendars, and as we discuss schedules and set goals for our programs - let’s see what kinds of dreams we can realize through our music and movem ent m inis tr ies this year . Refreshments will be provided!

MISSION OF THE MONTH TOTALS May: Sew Much Comfort $431.00 June: ELCA Malaria Campaign $472.84 July: Angel Books $245.00

TIP JAR FOCUSES August: 1000 Days Movement September: Brookings Backpack This September will mark the 6th anniversary of the Mission Coffeehouse at First Lutheran Church. During that time, many lives have been touched… the Fair Trade farmers who receive a fair price for their products, the local and global charities that receive the generous funds from the monthly tip jar donations, the customers who recognize that their buying decisions can have a larger impact in the world, the volunteers who derive joy from sharing of their time and talents, the community groups that utilize the meeting rooms, the families who enjoy Wednesday night dinner and fellowship, the college students who enjoy a safe and inviting place to study… the list truly goes on and on! As we look forward to changing even more lives, we also look forward to the continued, essential support provided by the members of FLC. Without you, these good works could not be performed. Here are a few ways that you can join in to help make a difference in the world: 1. BECOME A REGULAR PATRON AT THE COFFEEHOUSE. By choosing to eat lunch or enjoy coffee from the Mission Coffeehouse, you allow us to continue our mission efforts. 2. TELL OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY ABOUT THE MISSION COFFEEHOUSE AND ITS COMMITMENT TO CHANGING LIVES LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY. The Mission Coffeehouse needs you to help spread the news of our good works. Word of mouth is always the best form of advertising! 3. VOLUNTEER. In order to minimize payroll expenses and maximize mission dollars, the Mission Coffeehouse relies largely on volunteers. Volunteers are needed for Wednesday night dinners, funerals, special events and in the Coffeehouse itself. Join in the fun and reap the added benefit of knowing that you are making a difference. This summer has been bustling with activity, in June we hosted Camp Adventure, and in July we hosted another round of Camp Adventure. Currently we are enjoying the singing and drumming of Camp Heartbeat! We have enjoyed the company of the ladies from Lake Whitewood who stopped in for lunch and then were on their way to tour McCrory Gardens. We also hosted a group from Clear Lake who were on their monthly outing and chose to join us for lunch before touring the Children’s Museum and McCrory Gardens. In August we are looking forward to hosting a group from Clark, SD. We feel so blessed that these groups have chosen to share in the experience of the Mission Coffeehouse.
