Because of You

Dear Community Partners, Leaders, Families and Friends,

A Community School is a place and a network of supportive partnerships between the school and the community. Together, we create a web of support that helps children learn, families succeed, neighborhoods engage and communities thrive.

The end of the regular school year is in sight. As we reflect on the school year, it is always hard to believe how fast 10 months passes. This has been a year full of learning and new experiences for all of our students. We are excited to start planning for the 2014-2015 school year.

PARTNER PROFILE Camp Fire USA has been providing enrichment programming at Rosa Parks for several years now. Kam and Patrice lead the groups on Thursdays. They provide fun activities and great experiences for the students enrolled in their programs. We are happy to have them!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT Jane Morrison is the Building Engineer at Rosa Parks Elementary. She has been keeping this building in order since it opened. Not only does she love the building, she loves the kids with all of her heart, taking time out of her day to make sure they have what they need. This is her last month here and we are truly going to miss her. We love you, Miss Jane!

Over the summer months, we encourage families to get their children involved in learning activities such as the Tulsa Library’s Summer Reading Program. Children birth through entering the 5th grade can join the Children’s Summer Reading Program. Young children can have books read to them. If your child is going into the 6th grade, or are older, learn about the Tween & Teen Summer Reading Program. Visit their website to get more information and STOP THE SUMMER SLIDE!

A LOOK BACK AT April 2014 Nutrition in Specials During the month of April, six OU Nursing students taught nutrition lessons to K-5 students at Rosa Parks. Over six days, they covered everything from healthy eating habits to the benefits of an active lifestyle. Combine this partnership, our fabulous PE program, our nutritious school lunches, and the gardening that students get to do each week with Global Gardens…and you’ve got one HEALTHY school! Fine Arts Fine arts are an integral part of Rosa Parks Elementary. Charles Johnston, music, and Katie Cealka, art, facilitate fine arts lessons for students every day. In addition, they work to th provide extra experiences for students in the arts. During April, Mr. Johnston took the 4 grade students to see RIOULT Dance Company and directed the choir performance at Youth Arts. Ms. Katie displayed student work at Youth Arts and created a mural out of leftover art to represent our school and community. Child Development Shadows Twenty-three students completed eightythree hours of volunteer work at Rosa Parks during April. Students from the Child Development class at the High School have been learning from the teachers and students while providing some much needed additional support.
