BECAUSE OF YOU, WE DO MORE. From bluegrass fans to jazz buffs, weddings to exhibitions, and violinists to volunteers Jefferson Center is a central gathering place for interacting with others. Our programs and activities provide a reason to gather, bringing together community partners, artists, students and performers. Currently we house a diverse tenant mix bringing 20 cultural, educational and human services organizations into daily interactions such as the Clean Valley Council, Local Colors, and Children’s Trust.

Jefferson Center offered us much more professional space, as well as a welcoming place for the children, while allowing us to maintain low over head costs.” Janice Dinkins Davidson, Children’s Trust Hundreds of local businesses, community groups, individuals and families gather at the exquisite Shaftman Performance Hall, Fitzpatrick Hall and Fralin Atrium rental facilities for everything from corporate training to private weddings, parties, and art exhibits. John Hall, a volunteer and Jefferson High School alumni, is one of 250 volunteers that enthusiastically provide essential services that are the lifeblood of our growing organization.

Our education programs directly serve hundreds of students annually on site and reach thousands more in our community through our outreach programs. Jefferson Center is an outstanding example of a thriving nonprofit that has delivered for our community. Wise investments and thoughtful donations from this community have led to enumerable memories, broad community revitalization, and a cultural vitality that is appealing and attractive to people when they consider calling this community their home. August 15-16, 2014 For the 10th year in a row, the Jefferson High School Alumni Association held its AllClass Reunion Weekend at Jefferson High School—now known as Jefferson Center. From a “sock hop” in Fitzpatrick Hall, to a screening of the award-winning documentary “Jefferson High School: 50 Magical Years,” to a time to share JHS memories—a terrific time was had by all. A portion of the money raised by the Alumni Association is donated to the Jefferson Center Foundation to help maintain the building and fund programming presented throughout the year.

Music Lab at Jefferson Center is an innovative model of experiential learning in music business, technology, and performance. The goal of Music Lab is to enrich the overall educational experience by focusing on creating a positive image of self and community and by developing skills, disciplines, self-confidence and literacy. Music Lab programs also provide unique mentoring experiences by guest artists performing at Jefferson Center and include recording sessions, workshops and live performances with the students. Most recently, Michael League, the founder and band leader of Snarky Puppy completed a residency that included several activities with Music Lab students, as well as area schools. In addition to workshops and performances with students, a series of live performances were filmed inside the beautiful Shaftman Performance Hall creating the Snarky Puppy Family Dinner album and DVD.
BUKURU made it to #8 on iTunes Bukuru Celestin is a Music Lab student from Patrick Henry High School, now attending Virginia Western Community College. Originally from Burundi, Africa, Bukuru writes, records and performs gospel music in the Afrobeat style. Through Jefferson Center’s Music Lab and a number of generous grantors, Bukuru recorded a full-length album, Amkeni, in collaboration with the jazz/funk group Snarky Puppy.
Family Dinner is bringing international attention to the ongoing mission of Jefferson Center’s Music Lab and highlights Music Lab students 12 year old Jayna Brown, 15 year old Gabe Morales and Music Lab Alumni 21 year old Judi Jackson. The performances included as Bonus tracks on the DVD highlight the talents of these young performers.
The Bukuru Celestin/Snarky Puppy residency did more than create an album. Along the way, they presented lectures and demonstrations in local schools, libraries, and Shaftman Performance Hall — guiding young, local musicians through workshops highlighting the power of music to bring cultures together into a seamless musical language.
The Family Dinner CD/DVD set went on sale worldwide on September 24th, 2013 and soared to #1 on the iTunes Jazz Charts in US, UK and Netherlands. The videos have gone viral, with combined views of more than 425,000 in less than a month!

This highly successful project was just one of the many experiential learning opportunities offered by Music Lab at Jefferson Center. JEFFERSON CENTER HELPS MAKE SECOND RUNWAY a first-class event. In July, Jefferson Center hosted the SECOND RUNWAY fashion show and silent auction to benefit Goodwill Industries® of the Valleys. The social and silent auction was held in Fitzpatrick Hall prior to the runway show, which took place in the Jefferson Center’s Shaftman

Performance Hall. With nearly 300 in attendance, SECOND RUNWAY raised more than $35,000 to support Goodwill job training and employment programs. The spaces at Jefferson Center can accommodate banquets, weddings, seminars, workshops, trade shows, events and meetings of almost any size—with capacities from five to 900. Parking is free.
