Case Study Synopsis Mapletree Business City II Min Thu, Vincent Koo Mapletree Business City II is the second phase of Mapletree Business City precinct in Singapore. Located at the fringe of the city on a site of 43,727m2, this business park features 124,884m2 of GFA integrated in a confluence of work and play. The core collaboration BIM team comprised a design team and a construction team. The design team was led by DCA Architects Pte Ltd and included SHMA Co Ltd. (landscape architect), Mott MacDonald Singapore Pte Ltd (mechanical and electrical) and P&T Consultants Pte Ltd (civil and structural). The construction team included Shimizu Corporation (the Main Contractor) and the prime subcontractors, namely Bintai Kindenko Pte Ltd and APP Engineering Pte Ltd. Innovative uses of BIM in the project included thorough exploration of design alternatives with immersive virtual reality, automated designcode checking of certain aspects using the Singapore Building Construction Authority's (BCA) e-plancheck system, 3D printing of landscape features for design and construction visualization, and sun path analysis to choose the right grass species for the lawns. Construction planning and control used 5D models throughout, shop drawings were generated directly from the model for reinforced concrete elements that were precast on-site, and the as-built model was delivered for facility maintenance. The high-level milestones of the project timeline remained unchanged. The detailed level of coordination achieved using BIM validated its effectiveness in ensuing prompt decision making throughout the design development stage and on site to meet timely completion for Temporary Occupation Permit (TOP) 1 within 20 months and Temporary Occupation Permit (TOP) 2 in 26 months. © 2017 Rafael Sacks, Chuck Eastman, Ghang Lee, Paul Teicholz
