Blowin’ In The Wind (Bob Dylan, 1962) Lesson notes: Strum pattern: D D DUDU (or thumb-pick the first D). ‘tis quite tricky to strum and sing. Start off with the pattern but don’t focus on it too much while singing (if you plan on singing). The idea is to accompany the words. Capo: 7th fret to match the ‘Recorded Version’ (RV) (the actual chords are: D, G, A – the chord shapes with the capo on 7 are G, C, D) Check out: 1963 live version where Dylan sings in G, C, D without capo – note how he incorporates the descending bass line but not the same as the RV version – on RV version the bass line is a constant between G & C (could ‘63 be a random interpretation of his own recording – well why not! It’s his song) Note: this version is my interpretation of the 1963 live version – take out the bass line for a more ‘strummy’ simplified version – add the bass line for a more ‘tricky’ finger picking style! 

Intro: G (1 bar) Verse 1 (based on the ’63 live version) (RV: features a descending bassline) G C G (RV: G C G/B G/A G/D G) How many roads must a man walk down, ( How many roads must a man walk down) C G Before you call him a man? G C G How many seas must a white dove fly, C D Before she sleeps in the sand? G C C/B C/A D G And how many times must a cannon ball fly, C C/B G Before they're forever banned? Chorus C/G D G C/G The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind, D G The answer is blowin’ in the wind. (the chorus chords repeat with harmonica accompaniment)

Other verses… How many years can a mountain exist, Before it’s washed to the sea? How many years can some people exist, Before they're allowed to be free? And how many times can a man turn his head, And pretend that he just doesn't see? The answer my friend is blowing in the wind / The answer is blowing in the wind. How many times must a man look up, Before he sees the sky? And how many ears must one man have, Before he can hear people cry? And how many deaths will it take till we know, That too many people have died? The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind / The answer is blowin’ in the wind.
