Switched on Communities Innovations in Dementia is part of an interesting project called Switched on Communities. The project is run by a charity called AbilityNet. AbilityNet provides information and advice about how to make computers easier to use for people with any sort of disability. You can find out more about AbilityNet at www.abilitynet.org.uk or you can telephone them on 0800 269545. Different equipment for different people The Switched on Communities project allowed us to let people with dementia try out different types of equipment. We worked with people at the Tresham Housing21 day centre in Westminster and the computer club at the Hounslow branch of the Alzheimer’s Society. People are surprised about the choice of equipment that is available. Find out more Nada will be presentimg a workshop about this project at the Technology in Dementia Care conference organised by the Journal of Dementia Care. This conference will take place on 1 October 2009 in Birmingham. Investigating different ways of finding information Innovations in Dementia is working with the Trent Dementia Services Development Centre and the Disabled Living Foundation on an interesting project. The project involves looking at ways to give people with dementia access to information about tips and gadgets that might make life easier. The first stage of the project looked at two existing sources of information: atDementia atDementia is produced by the Trent Dementia Services Development Centre. This directory lists products and advice that might help under broad headings. Find out more at www.atdementia.org.uk AskSara AskSara is produced by the Disabled Living Foundation. This directory asks a series of questions and then produces a list of suitable products and advice. Find out more at www.asksara.org.uk What did we find? The people we worked with have all found being asked a series of questions easier than working through a list of categories. What happens next? The Disabled Living Foundation and the Trent Dementia Services Development Centre will be using the AskSara model to create a new-look atDementia website. Innovations in Dementia will be working with more people with dementia to test the new directory at every stage in its development. Page 3 Innovations in Dementia CIC
