Brandon Valley ACT Prep Course The ACT prep course offered through Brandon Valley School District will provide your student with the skills necessary to improve their ACT scores. The course is an excellent value as the price includes The Real ACT Prep Guide, software to provide your student with detailed feedback on strengths and weaknesses, full ACT test and four nights of review on specific test‐taking tips. Diagnostic Test: Sept 10th and Sept 17th The most effective way to prepare for the ACT is to take practice tests. On the first two nights, each student will complete at least one full actual ACT test. Based on this test, we will provide students with scores in fourteen subsets, identifying specific weaknesses and giving them focuses study goals. These two sessions will be held in Mr. Lovrien’s room (256). A full ACT takes nearly 4 hours, so the test will be taken on two nights. If students are unable to make either night, they must take the practice test on their own and get the scansheets to Mr. Lovrien by Tues, Sept 18th (we need to to prepare individualized ACT prep tips for each student). Content Nights (9/24, 10/3 Wed!, 10/15, and 10/22) We try to meet on Monday nights but the first two Mondays in October have conflicts (conferences and Native American day). There are too many events scheduled on the other nights of those weeks so we were forced to schedule one evening on a Wednesday. We apologize for any conflicts with church and/or youth group, but we weren’t able to find make another night work. If a student can’t make the Wed evening class, we will be happy to print off the tips for the night and provide them help in mornings/afterschool. On the content nights, we try to review test‐taking tips and content‐related information in the first hour. The second hour is largely reserved for working through practice tests in the content area. If a student is too busy on a given night, we do understand if they have to leave after the first hour. If a student must leave early, we encourage them to complete the practice questions on their own time and bring scansheets to Mr. Lovrien’s room so they can be scored. The testing tips we provide only work if students practice using them! Thoughts on ACT Prep Courses ACT prep courses suffer from some of the same challenges as programs such as weight watchers: some participants think that after paying money, they will magically get results. We provide the tips needed to improve scores, but students must practice taking ACT tests! Most students will take the ACT two or three times and scores tend to go up each time, reflecting the value of becoming familiar with the testing format. Your student will be given a review book of their own and this book should be marked‐up, underlined and highlighted. Please check the book and ask your student how many practice tests they have completed. We do not provide any ‘secret’ tips to bring up scores as they really don’t exist. (For example, we frequently hear the myth that ‘c’ is not the most common answer on the ACT…false, it is the answer about 25% of time!) Our course will work if students attend, take notes and practice with the prep book provided. Excited to help your student get into college and earn some scholarship money! Thanks, Staff
