Why has BS 8888 been upgraded?

BS 8888:2011 brings together, in one easy-to-follow document, all international standards needed to prepare technical product specifications (TPS), in accordance with geometrical product specification principles.

This revision of BS 8888 introduces the new international documentation and geometrical product specification standards published since the 2008 edition. It also incorporates more fully than previous editions some of the fundamental requirements of the key international standards relevant to the preparation of technical product specifications, in particular BS EN ISO 1101 on geometrical tolerancing and BS EN ISO 5459 on datums.

BS 8888 helps you to make better use of the ISO system of product specification because it covers more than just engineering drawing: instead you will find all aspects of technical product specification, including, for instance, the use of 3D CAD models to define component geometry are demonstrated.

New BS 9991 - Fire safety in the design, management and use of residential buildings. Code of practice Fully revised and updated, risk-based approach to fire safety in residential buildings. BS 9991:2011 gives recommendations and guidance on the design, management and use to achieve reasonable standards of fire safety for all people in and around: s Dwellings (single-family dwelling houses, self-contained flats or maisonettes) s Residential accommodation blocks (e.g. for students or hospital staff), with individual bedrooms and the provision of kitchen/sanitary facilities constructed within a fire compartment, accommodating not more than six persons s Sheltered housing and extra care housing. The guidance provides measures to control or mitigate the effects of fire. The primary objective is to ensure that an adequate standard of life safety can be achieved in the event of a fire in the building. This can also have the effect of assisting the fire and rescue service and provide some property and environmental protection. There are references throughout BS 9991:2011 to occupant safety, fire-fighter safety and property protection, to draw attention to the different considerations these could raise.

Fully revised and updated BS 9991:2011 is a full revision of BS 5588-1:1990 Fire precautions in the design, construction and use of buildings. Code of practice for residential buildings. It has been revised to reflect advances in technology, equipment and best practice across the industry and now provides a level of flexibility that allows the fire protection measures and the risks to be assessed to enable reasonable practical solutions to be designed. BS 9991:2011 applies to the design of new buildings and to material alterations, extensions or change of use of an existing building. It also provides guidance on the ongoing management of fire safety in a building throughout the entire life cycle of the building, including guidance for designers to ensure that the overall design of a building assists and enhances the management of fire safety.
