RULES
Sixteenth Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition I 1. The Sixteenth Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition, organised by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, will be held in Warsaw from 2 to 23 October 2010. 2. The Competition Jury will consist of outstanding Polish and foreign musicians. II The Competition is open to pianists of all nationalities born in the years 1980– 1993. III 1. Participation in the Competition is conditional on a candidate submitting the required documents and recordings (see § IV) by the deadline given below and, if accepted, taking part in the Preliminaries for the Sixteenth Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition, to be held in Warsaw from 12 to 21 April 2010 (see § VI & VII). 2. To a proposal from the Chair of the Admissions Committee, the Chair of the Jury of the Preliminaries may admit a candidate to the Sixteenth Competition with exemption from the preliminary auditions, based on his/her outstanding artistic achievements. IV 1. c) 3 current glossy portrait photographs (9×12 cm) to be used in the Competition programme and press publications d) documentation of musical studies (photocopies) e) references from two renowned pianists, including a recommendation for the Sixteenth Competition f) documentation of musical activities over the last three years (participation in international piano competitions, copies of diplomas, prizes and honorary mentions, programmes from concerts and festivals) g) DVD recording containing the programme of Stage I of the Sixteenth Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition (see § IX); this must be a recording taken from a single camera, with no cuts during the performance of a work, right profile to the camera, with the pianist’s whole silhouette and hands clearly visible h) bank receipt showing payment of application fee of 100 EURO to the following account: Raiffeisen Bank Polska Warszawa Centrala ul. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Submitted documents will not be returned. 2. Candidates will be notified of the receipt of their applications. This notification
will constitute an agreement between the Fryderyk Chopin Institute and the candidate concerning his/her admission and participation in the Preliminaries and in the Sixteenth Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition, in accordance with the rules specified herein. V 1. Candidates’ documents and recordings will be assessed by the Admissions
Committee, comprising renowned Polish musicians. 2. The Committee will admit to the Preliminaries in principle 160 candidates. 3. The list of candidates admitted to the Preliminaries will be made public
by 1 March 2010. 4. Candidates not admitted to the Preliminaries will be refunded their entry fee,
minus bank transfer costs.
VI 1. The Jury of the Preliminaries will comprise outstanding Polish and foreign musicians. 2. Candidates will be notified of the date and time of their audition in the Preliminaries to the Sixteenth Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition by 10 March 2010. 3. Competitors are obliged to arrive in Warsaw no later than two days before their appearance in the Preliminaries and to register with the Competition Secretariat.

The Preliminary Stage repertoire must be played from memory. The works may be performed in any order, with the exception of the set études, which must be performed one after the other. VII 1. The preliminary auditions will be open to the public. 2. In principle 80 participants will be admitted to the Competition. 3. The list of participants admitted to the Competition will be announced on 22 April 2010. VIII 1. The Sixteenth Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition will consist of three stages and a final. 2. Competitors are obliged to register with the Competitors’ Secretariat no later than 29 September 2010. 3. In principle 40 competitors will be admitted to Stage II, 20 competitors to Stage III, and no more than 10 competitors to the Final. Stage III performances to last 55–60 minutes. Works may be performed in any order. Should a competitor overrun the time limit, the Jury may stop the performance. Final One of the concertos: in E minor, Op. 11 or in F minor, Op. 21 X 1. The Competition Repertoire must be played from memory. 2. Whilst the texts of all available editions of Chopin’s works are admissible, the organisers recommend the Urtext of the National Edition of the Works of Fryderyk Chopin (ed. Professor Jan Ekier). 3. Competitors are obliged to specify in their applications the edition of Chopin’s works they will be using and the exact timing of each work. 4. A competitor may only alter his/her programme for any stage of the Competition by informing the Competition Secretariat of the change by 10 August 2010. XI 1. The Jury assesses the interpretations of each competitor on the basis of the Jury Rules, made public prior to the Competition. 2. The Jury awards regulation prizes, special prizes and distinctions. The prize-winners will earn the title Laureate of the Sixteenth Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition. 2. The remaining finalists will each receive a monetary distinction of 4,000 €. 3. 4. Competitors eliminated at Stages II and III receive diplomas of participation. XIII 1. The Jury has the right to alter, by a two-thirds’ majority, the number and arrangement of the prizes and distinctions, with the proviso that the total sum allocated for prizes and distinctions cannot be increased, and the sums for particular prizes and distinctions cannot be lower than provided for in the Competition Rules. 2. The Jury has the right to not award special prizes. 3. The Jury’s decisions are final and not subject to appeal.
XIV The prizes, special prizes and distinctions will be presented to their recipients on 21 October 2010. Diplomas of participation will be presented on 8 and 17 October 2010.
XV 1. All laureates are obliged to perform, without remuneration, in the gala concert and its two repeats. Unjustified absence from the gala concert and its repeats will result in the forfeiting of prize money. 2. The programme of the gala concert will be established by the Presidium of the Competition Jury in agreement with the performers. 3. Laureates are obliged to perform the programme as established by the Jury Presidium. XVI The conditions for the acceptance of extra prizes are stipulated in the Rules for Extra Prizes. The Competition Director accepts or rejects prizes put forward on the basis of these Rules. Proposals for extra prizes should be submitted to the Competition Secretariat by 30 September 2010. Monetary prizes will be paid in the currency in which they were deposited. Extra prizes will be awarded on 22 October 2010. XVII 1. Candidates accepted for the Preliminary Stage will pay for their own travel to and from Warsaw. 2. Participants in the Preliminary Stage will pay for their own food and lodging in Warsaw. 3. Attached to participants’ notification of the date and time of their preliminary audition will be a list of proposed hotels and student hostels. 4. Participants admitted to the Sixteenth Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition will receive air tickets to and from Warsaw. Tickets will be sent to the address given on the application form. 5. The Fryderyk Chopin Institute will cover the costs of food and lodging for participants in the Competition, over the following dates: participants in Stage I from 27 September to 8 October 2010 participants in Stage II from 27 September to 14 October 2010 participants in Stage III from 27 September to the end of the Competition participants in the Final from 27 September to the end of the Competition. XVIII
1. The Fryderyk Chopin Institute will make practice instruments available to all participants in the Preliminary Stage and the Competition proper. 2. Finalists are assured of one rehearsal with orchestra. XIX 1. The Preliminary Stage and all stages of the Competition proper will be open to the public. 2. The playing order of competitors will be drawn in public, on 30 September 2010 at 5 p.m. All competitors must be present. 3. The Competition Office has the right to make changes to the order of competitors on any particular day, for organisational or programming reasons. In the case of illness, confirmed by the Competition’s medical staff, a competitor may be given consent to perform last in order. The new order thus established will stand definitively until the end of the Competition. XX 1.

Competitors cede to the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, without remuneration, the rights to the following: - performances of works during the Preliminary Stage and the Competition proper - performances of works during the gala concerts - photographic and recorded images taken during participation in the Preliminary Stage, the Competition proper and the gala concerts. These rights are unlimited in time and space for the following purposes: 1) recording 2) reproduction (all forms) 3) trading 4) placing on computer memory, Internet or other networks 5) public play-back and performance 6) exhibiting 7) screening 8) renting 9) leasing 10) broadcasting by wired or wireless sound or vision by terrestrial or satellite stations 11) simultaneous and integral radio and television transmission and retransmission. These rights are ceded on the conclusion of the agreement (see §IV.2)

The exploitation of these rights in the ways set out above will be carried out by individuals, firms, radio and television stations and record labels authorised to do so by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. XXI
In all matters lying outside the competence of the Jury, the Institute Director has the right to take decisions which are final and not subject to appeal. XXII 1.
All doubts regarding the Competition Rules will be resolved on the basis of the Polish text.

All matters not covered by the Competition Rules are subject to Polish law.
3.
Any disputes not resolved as provided for by § XXI will be resolved by the Polish court with local jurisdiction over the Fryderyk Chopin Institute.
