1. Aims and scope One of the developments that changed today's business environment is the increased concern about the sustainability, or unsustainability, of our society. “The most important leadership challenge facing business today is the integration of sustainability into core business functions” (BSR/ GlobeScan, 2012). This integration of sustainability calls upon organizations to re-think, re-design and re-develop their business practices. Projects as temporary organizations play an increasing role in business and society (Lundin and Söderholm, 1995). Projects are the core means for introducing change in organizations and in society (Turner and Müller, 2003). Since some years, the relevance of sustainable development for project management and the explicit or implicit consideration of sustainable development principles in managing projects has been discussed in academia and practice (Gareis et al., 2013; Maltzman and Shirley, 2010; Silvius et al., 2012). Silvius and Schipper (2014) identify a growing number of publications that relate sustainability to project management. In a structured review of 164 books, articles, papers and book chapters, they identify several ‘impact areas’ that provide leverage points for the consideration of sustainability in projects. Some of these impact areas, for example project stakeholder management, are well developed (e.g. by Achman, 2013; Eskerod and Huemann, 2013; Bal et al., 2013), whereas others, for example project risk management or project portfolio management, are still to be explored. Thus an academic conversation has emerged on the relation between project management and sustainability (Silvius and Schipper, 2014), which we would like to continue and enrich in the special issue. There are several relations between managing projects and sustainability, such as • The specifics of managing sustainability projects: projects and programs are used for introducing sustainable

development into an organization, specific management challenges exist in this change projects/programs. • Integrating sustainability principles into managing project and programs: projects and programs are managed in a way that supports the creation of sustainable outcomes. This implies redesigning and enriching project management practices, specifically risk management and stakeholder management. • The concept of sustainable development is value based and relates to the behaviors and competences of the project and program management professionally, such as project managers, project owners, program managers and program owners, project teams and program teams. • The consideration of sustainability in project portfolio management. The aim of the special theme is to explore how the changes that relate to the concerns for sustainability are changing the profession of project management. Given the challenges that face society, sound academic knowledge is about integrating. 2. Potential topics The following list of potential topics is provided to stimulate ideas for manuscripts. Authors are not restricted to this list, but submissions must provide relevant insights framed by these research questions: • The role of projects and programs in realizing sustainable development • The impact of sustainability on project management methods, processes, practices and/or knowledge areas • The impact of sustainability on program management methods, processes, practices and/or knowledge areas. • Models and/or indicators of sustainability integration in projects or programs.

• Sustainability integration of project, program and portfolio levels • The impact of sustainability on the competences, behaviour and ethics of the project manager and other project and program management professionals • Project marketing and sustainability. 3. Submission process Authors should first submit a 1000-word abstract to get feedback about the suitability of the topic for the specific theme. Papers must be submitted online at http://ees.elsevier.com/ jpma carefully following the Guide for Authors. Submitted papers will be subject to the usual IJPM double-blind review process with multiple reviewers. For questions please contact the guest editors. 4. Key dates Abstract submission deadline: 1 October 2015 Paper submission deadline: 1 March 2016 Notifications to authors: 1 June 2016 Expected publication date: early 2017.
