( Guest$Editors$ Dr.(Joseph(M.(Cheer((Monash(University,(Australia),(Dr.(Stroma(Cole((University(of(the(West( of( England),( Prof.( Kumi( Kato( (Wakayama( University,( Japan),( Prof.( Keir( Reeves( (Federation( University,(Australia)( Special$Issue$Theme$ Tourism(and( Cultural( Landscapes( in( Small( Islands:( Problems,( Prospects( and( Cultural( Realignment( Special$Issue$Description$ The(islandLminded(idea(of(nature,(separated(from(culture,(has(also(changed.(Some( say(we(are(at(the(‘end(of(nature’:(there(is(now(a(human(signature(on(all(the(global( flows:(the(biophysical(system(is(also(cultural,(as(the(new(epoch(of(the(Anthropocene( is(imagined((Robin,(2015).( Libby(Robin’s(treatise(captures(the(central(intent(of(this(special(issue(to(critically(interrogate( the( intersection( between( tourism( and( contemporary( cultural( landscapes( of( small( islands.( Reference(to(‘small(islands’(encompasses(both(developing(and(developed(country(contexts( and( ‘cultural( landscapes’( necessarily( embodies( both( nature( and( culture,( not( as( distinct( or( loosely(affiliated(constructs(but(as(an(amalgamated(and(conjoined(whole.(Drawing(linkages( between(nature(and(culture((ecological(or(environmental( humanities)(on(small(islands(and( the(associated(connection(to(human(signature(speaks(of(the(intimate(relationship(between( tourism(and(cultural(landscapes.(( ( If,(as(according(to(Robin,(‘islands(are(idealised(ecological(worlds,(the(Edens(of(a(fallen(planet’,( the(rationale(underpinning(tourism(expansion(should(acknowledge(MacLeod’s((2013)(notion( of(‘cultural(realignment’(that(calls(for(optimal(and(resilient(encounters.(Cultural(realignment( applied(to(tourism(suggests(that(the(‘marketing(of(images(and(branding(of(a(group(of(people,( dwelling( place( or( cultural( site;( the( promotion( or( reorganisation( of( tangible( and( intangible( heritage’(and(‘cultural(representation,(cultural(interpretation(and(cultural(commodification’( must( consider( the( fundamental( nature( of( tourism( induced( change( (MacLeod,( 2013,( p.( 74).( MacLeod(appeals(for(a(rethink(concerning(the(resilience(of(island(cultural(landscapes(in(the( face(of(tourism(and(other(expansionary(initiatives.(( ( This( special( issue( is( urgent( and( timely( in( lieu( of( Buckley’s( (2008,( p.( 48)( characterization( of( cultural( landscapes( as( “a( place( where( the( setting( would( not( look( the( same( without( the( culture,(and(the(latter(would(not(look(the(same(without(the(landscape”.(In(interrogating(the( links( between( tourism( and( cultural( landscapes( on( small( islands,( papers( that( offer( critical( responses( to( Baldacchino’s( assertion( that( “Islands( –( especially( small( ones( –( are( now,( unwittingly,( the( objects( of( what( may( be( the( most( lavish,( global( and( consistent( branding( exercise( in( human( history”( (2012,( p.( 55)( are( sought.( Papers( should( also( seek( to( advance( MacLeod’s(notion(of(‘cultural(realignment’(and(interrogate(the(ways(in(which(approaches(to( optimizing( the( tourismLcultural( landscape( nexus( on( small( islands( may( offer( more( fecund( hostLguest(exchanges.(( (
