CAMBRIDGE ENGLISH

Introduction

Introduction

A century at the leading edge of language assessment As this publication goes to press, we are making preparations to mark 100 years of Cambridge English exams. As well as a celebration, it is also an opportunity to look back on a century as a leading organisation in language assessment and review our achievements in terms of development, meeting the needs of learners and our commitment to excellence. Since our first exam, Cambridge English: Proficiency, also known as Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), was created in 1913, global travel and technology have fundamentally changed our view of the world, creating opportunities for international study, business and migration previously undreamt of. This has fuelled a growing demand for English, and our exams have developed to meet the practical needs and aspirations of learners around the world. From just one exam, our range of assessments has grown to encompass learners of all abilities – from the very youngest taking their first steps in English to the most proficient, with specialist qualifications for business and the professions. We have also developed a comprehensive choice of qualifications for teachers. Each of our exams is developed, produced and tested using the latest research and methodology from the largest dedicated research facility of its kind. As part of the University of Cambridge, our search for excellence is matched by our desire to contribute to language education and to the knowledge and understanding of language assessment. We therefore share much of our research with academics, teachers and other language education professionals. Anniversaries are also a time to look to the future, and in the coming years we expect to see further demand for English for study, international business and creating standards for professional competence. We work closely with governments around the world on delivering educational projects, and as English becomes increasingly important to children’s futures, we anticipate collaborating with even more countries on programmes for primary education.

To extend the range of knowledge offered under the umbrella of TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test), a flexible set of specialist modules has been created. There are three specialist TKT modules. TKT modules can be taken all together at the same time or separately, in any order, over a period of time.

Official Preparation Materials and Support TKT: CLIL Module

TKT: CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) This module tests the knowledge of concepts related to content and language integrated learning. TKT: CLIL describes an evolving approach to teaching where subjects are taught and studied through the medium of a non-native language. In TKT: CLIL learning a second or foreign language and learning a curricular subject are given a joint role; for example, a non-native speaker learning geography in English. TKT: CLIL tests knowledge about content teaching in a second language and the learning, thinking and language skills which are developed across different curriculum subjects. It tests knowledge of how to plan lessons as well as knowledge of activities and resources used to support a CLIL approach. It also tests knowledge of teaching strategies and how assessment is carried out in CLIL contexts.

Modules 1–3: Computer-based Sample Test

English teachers need to be both linguistically aware and able to understand the difficulties students may encounter in the language learning process. To help meet this need, TKT: Knowledge About Language tests a candidate’s knowledge of the language systems needed by teachers for planning and teaching their lessons.

TKT: Young Learners Module

TKT: Young Learners tests the background knowledge related to teaching young learners in the 6–12 age range and the practice of planning lessons, teaching strategies and assessing learning. It is suitable for international candidates teaching across the primary sector of education. Candidates taking the test may have some experience of teaching English to young learners and will be familiar with the language of teaching as represented in the TKT Glossary.
