Rev. 4.3 This Guide is intended to answer Centurion U/UE/M/S questions and to act as a Quick Start Guide. It is not intended to be encyclopedic on the diagnostic/repair process - only to answer questions about Centurion U/UE/M/S. Introduction The Centurion Diagnostic Software is a user-friendly software tool able to diagnose engine and system problems. This Windows-based program was designed to communicate with a wide variety of Engine Control Units (ECUs). The interface between the ECU and the PC is a Vehicle Communication Module or VCM. The user interacts with the Centurion PC software, Centurion communicates with the VCM and the VCM communicates with the vehicle.

How it Works The ECU is a specialized small computer that interacts with and controls various vehicle sensors and solenoids. These sensors and solenoids include the temperature of the motor (Harleys head temperature sensor), outside ambient temperature and pressure (altitude), throttle position (TPS), engine speed (RPM), load (kPA or Manifold Absolute Pressure/MAP), and many more. The ECU processes all this data and makes adjustments so that the vehicle performs as it is programmed. Centurion diagnostics gives the user the ability to interact with these ECUs to improve, repair, or monitor the vehicle.

About this Manual This manual is organized by chapters to assist novice users with getting started. Many topics covered in this manual are also covered in the help menus available in the program itself.

1. Setup and installation 1.1 Where to get the Software The software is available online as a download from the TechnoResearch website or from the CD that is distributed with VCM products. Insert the CD-ROM from TechnoResearch Inc. into the DVD/CD-ROM drive of the computer…

1.2 Install Centurion-U After auto-run, press install button and follow installation prompts.

1.3 Run Centurion Double-click on the Centurion-U icon on the desk top to run the program. This will install the USB security hardware key driver necessary for Step 1.4

1.4 Insert Security Key into USB Port This is a portable licensing system. Plug this USB license key into any computer and the freely downloadable Centurion software will run. This lets shops utilize the software through multiple computers, simply by moving the hardware between them. Insert the provided pre-programmed USB software license key, (color matched for application), into the USB port of the computer. This will enable the software to run.

• Remove one software license key before attempting to use another. Only one software license key may be accessed at a time.

1.5 Connect USB Cable These USB cables are standard and common. No unique cables are needed to connect the VCM to the computer. The VCM-TR3 also has Bluetooth 2.1 as an option over the USB cable. Connect the mini USB or USB cable to the Vehicle Communication Module (VCM). The module is shown below, with the mini USB port on the right side of the VCM. Connect the other end to the PC’s second USB port.

1.6 Power up the Centurion The Centurion Super Pro Kit provides cables to connect directly to the OBD ports on all Harley Davidson models. These also have individual part numbers and replacements can be purchased if needed Connect the Vehicle Communication Cable to the port on the other end of the Vehicle Communication Module. Connect the other end to the motorcycle’s data link connector. Please consult the motorcycle user manual for motorcycle data link port locations.

To avoid damaging the cables, keep them clear of the exhaust .

1.7 Power up to Automatically Install Drivers The VCM-TR1 is powered by the battery of the motorcycle, just make sure the ignition is ON and the RUN switch is ON. The VCM-TR3 can be powered by the battery of the motorcycle or from the computers USB port. The green light on the VCM should be lit is power is being received. Once the VCM is powered and the USB cable

attached to computer, the software will start a search for the cable drivers. In XP and older versions of Windows, the computer will prompt the user to perform additional steps: 1. Select the folder called ‘USB 2.0 Cable Drivers’ on the install CD. 2. The software will then find and install the drivers. In more recent versions of Windows, on a PC that is connected to the internet, the drivers will be located and installed automatically. If notifications are enabled, the user will see the status of the driver installation in a chat bubble in the lower right corner of their screen.

1.8 Update the Centurion Software Feature additions, changes, fixes, and updates are a part of our commitment to delivering the best possible product to the user. Keeping the software up to date, via the internet updater, is the best way to ensure that the user has the best possible experience with their software. After the Centurion software is installed, run the updater to get the latest program versions, including the newest calibrations and manuals. To update: Click the ‘Updater’ icon at the bottom of the opening screen. This will launch a separate program that will download all the updates and put them in the correct folders. This often requires no additional setup steps to be successful. If issues do arise, it may be necessary to disable the internet firewall on the computer and/or set exceptions for updater program.

2. Using the Centurion 2.1 Connecting to the Motorcycle and Key Features: The Centurion can connect to MANY brands and models depending on the customers’ needs and purchases. Selecting a brand and ECU will filter all the options of the software so that only the relevant parameters, tests and activations are displayed. This reduces confusion on features availability and increases ease of use. In order to display the data for monitoring, select any of the following views: dashboard mode, strip chart mode, or meters mode. To establish communication*, select the ‘Brand/ECU/Model’ command, either by clicking on the icon or by using the Options drop down menu. Once a connection is established with the ECU, the user may freely switch between the three data views.

*IMPORTANT: When using Centurion Super Pro, first select the motorcycle or ECU model to correctly configure the software to display the proper information. This is done by clicking on the ‘Motorcycle’ icon, and then selecting the brand, ECU and model.

After the Brand/ECU/Model is selected, click the ‘Connect’ icon.

Note: If communication with the ECU is lost or fails to initialize, the data will not be displayed and an error message dialog box will come up with troubleshooting suggestions.

2.2 Main Menu The user interface has been designed to be intuitive, understandable and navigable. The Centurion main menu offers a variety of commands. To open the menus and see the available commands, point and left click on the menu name. Below the main menu are the Toolbar Buttons, which offer quick access to the most common selections.

2.3 Tab Menu File Menu: Commands to open a file, export one, close an active window and quit the program View Menu: Contains commands related to data monitoring Communications Menu: Commands for connecting to the ECU, disconnecting from the ECU and selecting port settings Options Menu: Commands to select log settings, toggle log on or off, select O2/Gas Analyzer, select the ECU or model, and select channels, units and color settings Utilities Menu: Contains the calculator and unit conversions Help Menu: Displays a variety of help commands 11

3. Toolbar Icon Description 3.1 Toolbar Buttons/Commands

Open Data Analysis Opens a dialog box, displaying the data log files that have been created. Please note: to make this feature available, first set the ‘Recording’ feature to ‘On’. If it is set to ‘Off’, a log will not be created. The software will create a log file name based on date (and sequence, if applicable).

Print Prints a copy of the current screen. Warning: the Centurion uses a color scheme absent of white space that may not be suitable for most printing options.

Gauges/Meters The Gauges/Meters button enables viewing of data through bar slides, graphs, thermometers and check lights. It offers 6 configurable channels. The parameters at the top of this screen are not configurable

Strip Chart The Strip Chart Monitor button is used to view data in line plot and numerical form. It offers 16 configurable channels.

Horizontal Slide Bars The Horizontal Slide Bars button is used to view data with horizontal slide bars. It offers 4 configurable channels.

3.2 Digital Data View The Digital view has 6 configurable channels and digital display showing RPM, SPEED, ENGINE TEMP, AIR TEMP, and THROTTLE POSITION all in one screen.

3.3 Strip Chart Data View The Strip Chart data view has 16 configurable channels. See and track engine parameters all at once. Even record to review and analyze later.

3.4 Meter Data View The Meter data view has 4 configurable channels with sliding bars.

3.5 Active Test Sends commands to the ECU making it attempt to active parts of the motorcycle. This aids in quickly identifying WHERE the failure is or WHAT is failing. Example: Turn signal switch does not activate the turn signals. Command the ECU to turn on the LEFT turn signal via the appropriate CENTURION ACTIVE TEST. If the ECU can turn on the turn signal lights, the problem exists between the switch and the ECU, not the ECU and the light. This window provides the selection of Active Tests. An Active Test is an ECU command that temporary causes an effect on the vehicle, such as turning on a fan for a few seconds or activating a turn signal. These commands differ from Active Settings in that the changes do not persist beyond the testing phase. The Centurion’s Active Tests are filtered by ECU and limited to what the ECU being tested actually supports. Some ECUs differ within the brand and cannot be filtered, the Centurion will indicate if an attempted test is not supported by the ECU variation present.

3.5.1 Active Test Definitions (HD Delphi) System: System relay, fuel and coolant pumps. LED: ABS, battery, cruise, engine, 6th gear, low fuel, security tell tail, security lamp and alarm LEDs. Speedometer: Tachometer and speedometer. ABS Solenoid: Front & rear/apply & release, ABS and rear pumps. TSSM: Left and right turn signals. Actuators: ACR and throttle actuator. 16

ACR: Air compression release. EITMS: Engine idle temperature management system. Fans: Cooling fan. Adjust Idle Speed: Change and test idle speed. Injectors: Injectors 1 and 2. Coils: Coils 1 and 2.

3.6 Active Settings These are advanced features. Many Harley repairs and modifications REQUIRE the use of advanced diagnostic tools. Centurion is feature rich and easy to use. Simply click the icon and select the task from the dropdown options. This window provides the selection of Active Settings. An Active Setting is an ECU command that creates a lasting change to the vehicle, such changing a Key FoB, bleeding the ABS, or clearing DTCs. These commands differ from Active Tests in that the changes persist beyond the testing phase. The Centurion’s Active Settings are filtered by ECU and limited to what the ECU actually supports. Some ECUs differ within the brand and cannot be filtered before connection, the Centurion will indicate if an attempted procedure is not supported by the ECU variation present.

3.6.1 Active Settings Definitions DTC: Read and clear current and historic diagnostic trouble codes. Quickly read trouble codes from multiple modules on the motorcycle, view the results, and clear the codes… all in one easy to use interface. Speedometer Calibration: Validate speedometer output against the true traveling speed of the bike. Many motorcycles have a mismatch between actual speed and what is displayed. Use this feature to easily resolve this issue. Key Fob: Program or reprogram a new or damaged key fob, enable/disable alarm. Key FoBs made easy. Read the existing ECU information, open the new Key FoB, input the number shown inside in the appropriate Centurion fields, and click program. Idle Adjustment: Calibrate idle RPM. ECU Programming: Marry a blank ECU to the TSSM, HFSM or BCM, and program a VIN. Buy a brand new ECU and take it from blank to fully functional without leaving the shop. ABS Bleeding: Service/bleed front and rear brakes. Manual ABS bleeds are still needed, but the electronic bleeds might also be required to finish a job. A tool like Centurion is a requirement for this final procedure. Module Replacement: BCM, TSM, TSSM, HFSM module replace/marry to the ECU. 18

Connect/marry new modules to the old modules. Pre-CAN models it was a 30m manual procedure, now those take 14m. CAN models REQUIRE it be done with a tool, such as CENTURION. Enable/Disable: EITMS, ACR, exhaust, IAC, side stand and cruise control. Radio & Speakers: Program radio zone and speaker selection. : Finish any Harley radio and speaker job on site. (Does not include 2014 & 2015 yet).

3.6.2 Live DTC Monitoring This is a “wiggle test”. While connected to the motorcycle, the user can try to trigger a DTC and the Centurion will report it as soon as it happens.

While in Gauges-Meters mode, connect to the motorcycle and press the icon indicated in the picture below:

4. How to Change Units/Colors 4.1 How to change units International flexibility increased with easy setting changes. Go to ‘Options’ menu and select ‘Units’. Select the measurement scheme. Click ‘OK’.

4.2 How to change colors Change how the graph is displayed to increase visibility and accent certain parameters for analysis or monitoring. Go to "Options" menu and select "Colors".

4.1.2 Select channel for color change The options displayed will be unique to the data view currently selected. Clicking the color box under the label will provide color options for selection. Press “OK” when selection is complete.

5. Monitor Real-time data (Digital Data View) 5.1 Monitor Data To monitor real-time data with Digital data view: go to ‘View’ and select ‘Gauges/Meters’, or just click ‘Gauges/ Meters’ icon.

5.2 Change Channels To change the parameters displayed, go to ‘Options’ and select ‘Channels/Mode’, or just click ‘Channels/Mode’ icon. Channel options differ according to the current data view selected: Digital, Meters, and Strip Chart.

5.3 Change Visible Parameter There are six configurable channels in the Digital data view as well as 5 static parameters (Air Temp, Speed, Engine Temp, RPM, and Throttle Position). Click the gray square button adjacent to the Channel label for a drop down menu listing available parameter.

5.4.1 Select Parameter Select a parameter and click ‘OK’.

5.5 Communicate Turn on the ignition switch and make sure the engine stop switch is in the RUN position. Go to ‘Communication’ and select ‘Connect’ or just click ‘Connect’ icon.

6. Monitor Real-time data (Strip Chart display) 6.1 View Data To monitor real-time data with the Strip Chart data view: Go to ‘View’ and select ‘Strip Chart’ or just click ‘Strip Chart’ icon.

6.2 Turn ignition to run Turn on the ignition switch and make sure the engine stop switch is in the RUN position.

6.3 Communication Go to ‘Communication’ and select ‘Connect’ or just click ‘Connect’ icon.

6.4 Start Engine Start the engine or leave it in battery mode. The Centurion will display what the ECU reports in either state.

6.5 Channel Mode To change the parameters displayed, go to ‘Options’ and select ‘Channels/Mode’, or just click ‘Channels/Mode’ icon. Channel options differ according to the current data view selected: Digital, Meters, and Strip Chart.

6.6 Increasing or decreasing the number of channels on the Strip Chart data view. The strip chart channel display allows live motorcycle information to be viewed in 16 configurable channels. Set to view the live data in a way that helps isolate issues or confirms all is well. The Strip Chart data view can display up to sixteen channels at a time. To increase or reduce the number of channels, click ‘on/off’ switch. ON: Show the selected channel. OFF: Hide the selected channel.

6.7 Selecting Preferred Parameters Click on the ‘Arrow’ button to change the visible parameter. Select a parameter to display and then click ‘OK’.

6.8 Selecting View Mode Select ‘Parallel’ display or ‘Overlay’ display and then click ‘OK’.

7. Harley-Davidson Tests and Activations 7.1 Specific Functions Ease of use. Selecting the brand and model will filter out all features that are not available for that brand. The software is often limited ONLY by the ECUs capabilities. Example: A Magneti Marelli ECU permits the activation of individual coils and Delphi ECU does not, so Centurion will only display what the ECU allows for the ECU selected. Select the ECU type to be tested by clicking on the Motorcycle icon. Select a Brand from the drop down list and then the ECU/ECM. Click ‘OK’. Harley Davidson will only show ECU/ECM type.

7.2 Connecting Turn ON the ignition switch and make sure the engine stop/run switch is in the RUN position. Click CONNECT.

Active settings allow the user to make lasting changes to the ECU.

8. Specific functions for Harley-Davidson motorcycles 8.1 Read and Clear DTCs Quickly read trouble codes from multiple modules on the motorcycle, view the results, and clear the codes… all in one easy to use interface. This window displays both current errors (even those that may appear very briefly), as well as historic errors. Current DTCs are only present so long as the issue is being actively detected/reported by the module. Changing the conditions of the vehicle may shift a Current DTC to a Historic DTC. Recreating the condition that caused the DTC will create another Current DTC event, resulting in both a Historic and Current DTC of the same name/indication. 1. Select the Active Settings Icon:

2. Open the drop down menu and select ‘DTC’

3. Ensure that the key is on, the run button is on, and that the VCM is connected. 4. Click on ‘Read/Clear’.

5. The Centurion will test for all the modules and report on them.

6. Once testing is completed, a prompt will appear. To clear the errors from the ECU, press ok.

7. The Centurion will erase the DTCs. (Note: any active problems will cause reoccurring DTCs, the Centurion DTC function only reports and clears. It does not fix.)

8.2 Speedometer Calibration Many speedometers read incorrectly. The Centurion provides a quick and easy calibration tool. This feature allows the user to calibrate the speedometer with two known values: the target speed and the speedometer. The target speed is the actual speed reported by a dyno or GPS. The speedometer value is the value reported by the speedometer when the actual speed was read. 1. Ensure that the key is on, the run button is on, and that the VCM is connected. 2. Click ‘Read’.

8.3 KeyFob Programming KeyFoBs made easy. Open the new FoB, type the number, program and done. 1. Select KeyFob from Active Settings drop down list

2. Click on the ‘Read’ button to test the system

3. Number each KeyFob as Number 1 and Number 2. Open them to make sure that the codes displayed are correct

4. Write the new KeyFob’s code where the damaged KeyFob code was.

Click ‘Program’ next to the Key or Keys changed.

8.4 Key FoB Disabling (Hands Free fob only) 1. Select KeyFob from Active Settings drop down list

2. Click on the ‘Read’ button to test the system

3. Record the values for Key#1 and Key#2 so that they can easily be restored at a later time.

4. Click Disable. This will remove Key #1, Key#2 and disable the security for this unit.

8.5 Blank ECU programming A new ECU does not contain programming until a system like the Centurion installs it. A mechanic can now stock blank ECUs and program them to replace bad ECUs, all without leaving the shop. This feature allows the user to input the basic programming into a blank ECU. This programming includes a VIN and a stage 1 map download. Any further tuning or map needs will require a non-Centurion solution such as Direct Link tuning or official stock map downloads from a dealer. Once an ECU has been programmed and the user has closed Centurion or connected to another vehicle, that ECU is locked to that VIN. Please ensure all values and selections are correct before exiting the program. 1. Install the new ECU. 2. Ensure that the key is on, the run button is on, and that the VCM is connected. 3. Ensure that the battery is at 12v or more and will remain so for the duration of the test. 4. Read and accept the disclaimer. 5. Input the VIN in the space provided. 6. Click program.

7. Select the proper application for the motorcycle from the file selection window that opens. 8. Leave everything on and connected until procedure is complete. 9. Perform a module replacement procedure with the Centurion (see section 8.7 & 8.8). 41

8.6 ABS Bleeding Manual ABS bleeds are still needed, but the electronic bleeds might also be required to finish a job. A tool like Centurion is a requirement for this final procedure. 1. Select ABS from Active Settings drop down list

Glossary

ECM/ECU (Electronic control module/unit): This is the brain of the motorcycle; it makes calculations based on inputs coming from sensors mounted all over the engine.

WOT (Wide open throttle): The maximum opening of the throttle valve. AFR (Air fuel ratio): The relationship of parts of fuel to the parts of air. 13.0(air) to 1(fuel) usually makes the best power, and 14.6 is considered “perfect” air fuel ratio. This would be the AFR to get an ideal burn (theoretically). This would be at perfect atmospheric conditions and temps, with a perfect atomization which is almost impossible.

MAP (Manifold absolute pressure): These sensors measure barometric absolute pressure in the intake manifold. By calculating the mass of the air going into the engine, air temperature, and the rotations per minute of the engine, the engine’s ECU can determine the density of the air flowing into the fuel mixture. The ECU can then adjust air flow or fuel flow.

CKP or CP (Crank position sensor): This sensor tells the ECM when to fire and inject fuel depending on how fast the engine is running in Revolutions Per Minute.

IAT (Intake air temperature): The ECM calculates how dense the air is from this input. ET (Engine temperature): The ECM uses the signals from this sensor to determine if the engine is at operating temperature, or warming up.

Fuel Pressure Regulator: A mechanical device usually operated by vacuum form intake manifold that controls fuel pressure. It returns excess fuel from the fuel pump back to the fuel tank.

Fuel Injectors: The fuel injectors are electric valves that open and close to deliver fuel in spray form to the cylinder. They are controlled by the ECM to precisely deliver the correct amount of fuel at every engine speed or RPM and any given load. The time of injection is also known as the injector “pulse width” and is measured in milliseconds. Injectors are rated by their flow rate – such as in gm/sec, l/hr or grams per second.

Electric Fuel Pump or Fuel Pump: A 12-volt high-pressure fuel pump, usually located in the fuel tank, but it can be located outside as well. It supplies pressurized fuel to the fuel injectors.

IAC (Idle air control): An electric valve that’s threaded, to open and close as needed to let air into the engine for startup and idle operation when throttle valve is closed.

Closed Loop injection system: This circuit has 2 Oxygen sensors. The information on the difference of how much is coming out of the cylinder is relayed to the ECM and then adjusts the amount of fuel injected by shortening or lengthening the time the injectors are open.

O2 (oxygen) sensor: This tells the ECM how much oxygen is in the exhaust mixture so as to have the correct mixture. Anything under 14.7 is considered a rich mixture and anything above 14.7 is considered a lean mixture.

RPM (Revolutions per minute): Used to measure engine speed. TPS (Throttle position sensor): Measured in percentages (0 to 100) or Degrees (°) and/or Volts (V). DDM (Drop down menu): selection of parameters available for a field.
