STAFF LIST 2014

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Early Stage 1 KAH Mrs Rachel Allworth (Mon, Tues, Wed) Mrs Bronwyn Skinner (Thurs-Fri) KH Mrs Cristy Hoffmeister KM Ms Jo McIntyre (ES1 Coordinator)

A very warm welcome back to the new school year. We have returned ready for a great year ahead. We especially welcome all new students and their families. As well as the 71 Kindergarten students, we have new students in Years 1-6. A very warm welcome to you all! This is a very special place to work, to learn and to play and we encourage you to become involved in the life of the school. I know you will all join me in welcoming a new permanent staff member, Mrs Sonia Defina to our school community. Mrs Defina will be teaching Year 2 and is really excited about the year ahead. Mrs Bronwen Skinner has also accepted a 2 day per week temporary teacher offer to work with Mrs Allworth on Kindergarten. A BIG Panania welcome to you both! Today the new classes for 2014 have been formed, following daily monitoring of numbers. A full list of staff and classes is provided in this edition of Chatterbox for your reference. Students have been very settled in their 2013 classes and the whole school has been focusing on Road Safety and Sun Safety Education. This will continue next week. We have formed 18 classes for 2014 (17 straight classes and 1 multi age). Please support us in discussions with your child about their class and teacher for 2014. We have used our professional judgement and have spent a considerable amount of time trying to get the classes just right. Early anxieties about class placement usually dissipate very quickly. I know you will respect our decisions and I thank you very much for your patience as we commence the New Year. As I mentioned above, we have been focusing on Sun Safety as we start the new school year (there are a variety of posters on display in the Foyer). Our sun protection strategies and Sun Protection Units of work are based on the SunSmart program from the Cancer Council NSW. Our school hat is endorsed by the Cancer Council as it has a broad brim which gives total protection to the face, ears and neck. It is compulsory for all students K-6 to wear this hat. Caps are no longer allowed to be worn. Also, please support us in our efforts: We have banned liquid paper, in all its forms from use at school. With my best wishes,

Sandra Palmer.

P&C news….

Swimming Carnival...

We would like to warmly welcome all new families to the Panania PS School Community. You are really going to enjoy being involved in the life of the school.

The Years 3-6 (and proficient Year 2 students who are turning 8 years old this year) Swimming Carnival is to be held on Friday, 21 February, at Revesby Pool. Community members are warmly invited to join us on the day and cheer along the competitors. A note will go home shortly with further details.

The first P&C meeting for the year is to be held on Monday, 10 February. This is a great way to meet new people, make new friends and find out about how we “do things around here.” Mrs Palmer attends every meeting and speaks to us openly about many important school matters. We are a friendly group and would really like to bolster our numbers in 2014. Please join us next Monday, 10 February at 7.00pm in the A Block Staffroom.

School Photos... Our school photos will be taken on Thursday, 6 March. On this day children MUST wear full school uniform including correct shoes, socks and hair ties. More detail will be provided shortly. School Photo Co-ordinator.

P&C Committee.

SPORT PSSA Selection… PSSA Sport teams are selected for three seasons of different sports during the course of the year. Students in Years 3-6 are invited to try out. PSSA provides an opportunity for students to play competitively against other schools in the East Hills District. There will be two trials for Season 1 PSSA Sports. They will be held this Friday, 7 February and Friday, 14 February. As per our Sporting Selection Policy, these are the only two opportunities available for team selection and there will be two teachers supporting the selection of each sport team. Season 1 Sports are: • Netball taken by Miss Parkes and Mrs Cameron; • Newcombeball taken by Mrs Rowland and Mrs Morris; • Rugby League taken by Mr Dodd; • Tennis taken by Mrs Apostolovski. Please support us as we use our professional judgement to select teams. There are limited spaces and many students wanting to be involved. As I mentioned last year, the rules of logic will mean that many more students will not make a particular team than make it. As hard as it may sound…that is life. I am also reminded of the quote that I included last year… “The world is made up of people who did not make the team and who did not win the flower show.” Team selection will be a joint teacher decision. We have an excellent School Sport Program for students who do not go to PSSA. Please note also that students do not have to be competent tennis players to try out for Tennis. We do not play against other schools for this sport. It is purely an extra option for our students to develop skills in another sport. Sandra Palmer, (for all teachers involved in team selection).
