PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Our very busy Term 3 has certainly finished on a very high note. The Minister for Education, the Honourable Adrian Piccoli visited our school on Wednesday of this week. He was accompanied by his Press Secretary, Leah, our local member, Glenn Brookes, Mr Brookes Assistant, Douglas Walther (a past student of Panania PS) and Jan Green, Director Bankstown Network. It was unfortunate that all students and staff were not here for this important event. The Year 6 students; Miss Parkes, Mrs Cameron and Mr Newman left on Wednesday at 6.15am for two very busy days in Canberra and the Year 5 students, Mrs Apostolovski, Miss Simpson and Mr Dodd finished their 3 days at Narrabeen Sport and Recreation Camp on Wednesday. On that note I would like to publicly acknowledge the super efforts of all staff involved (both teaching and non-teaching) for their commitment and hard work organising these two very intensive activities. Much activity and lots of paperwork (including organising medical information and completing risk assessments) is necessary for these two big events on our school calendar to run smoothly. Back to Minister Piccoli’s visit: •

He was greeted by Kallie Thompson and Liam Parsons from 3/4A (in the absence of our School Captains) very confidently and in an engaging manner. They highlighted some of the things about our school that they feel are very special, including having a student voice with the SRC and the ‘Tell Them from Me’ surveys, our wonderful English and Mathematics programs and, of course, our wide range of sporting opportunities.

Liam Parsons, Kallie Thompson & the Honourable Adrian Piccoli

The Minister met our Office Staff and Executive. We had an opportunity to share with him what we are doing, as a school, to support the professional development of all staff and how beneficial the extra money we are receiving under the Gonski reforms has been. Mrs Robinson was able to share her insights as a trainer with the LMBR rollout to the 229 schools which he really enjoyed engaging in. (You might have noticed a lot of press about this over the last few weeks in terms of money spent so far.)

Minister Piccoli, the Office Staff & Mrs Palmer

We wandered down to D Block because the Minister said, “Let’s see a Kindergarten class.” On the way he met Karen Ryder (Canteen Manager) and Gillian Wedgwood (P&C President) in the School Canteen and enjoyed sampling the chickpea biscuits that Karen was baking.

He then stopped at our veggie garden to meet Mrs Waskiw and her helper, Fredrick Meisch (K/1H). They had a beautiful bunch of herbs ready to give him plus a laminated mini-poster memento of his visit to the garden.

Minister Piccoli & Fredrick Meisch K/1H

In KH Minister Piccoli was able to engage with the students who were in the middle of an L3 session (quality teaching in action).

His final task was to present our school representatives with 3 books for the School Library. Kallie and Liam were most impressed that he had signed the books.

Along with the iPad Program, we are trialling a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Program next term with 6C. The ICT Committee has worked very hard this year, going to professional learning and visiting other schools, to see their BYOD Programs in action. We have an Action Plan ready to start implementing next term with parent st surveys a component of this. Our aim is for 21 century practice in technology to be embedded into our school. As this is the last Chatterbox for Term 3, I would like to thank you for your ongoing support and to wish you a pleasant “Spring Break”. I hope you have the opportunity to spend time together as a family and to enjoy some beautiful spring weather.

Minister Piccoli, Liam Parsons, Kallie Thompson, Mr Brookes & Mrs Palmer.

Please note that there is no School Development Day at the beginning of Term 4. All staff and students return on Tuesday, 6 October, (after the Labour Day long weekend), for a very busy final term. Students should return in their summer uniform. Take care and keep safe. With my best wishes,

Sandra Palmer. WRITING AWARDS Congratulations to Billy Solomon from 3SK who received a Writer’s Award at assembly for his excellent information report on ’Dirk Hartog’. Minister Piccoli, Miss King and 1R students: A stopover “chat” on the way back to the office

This visit was such a wonderful way to highlight our exceptional school.

Writing samples can be viewed on the Writer’s Wall of Fame near the School Office.

CLASS SHOWCASE

Our showcasing of student work is located on the Schools Website, under the ‘School Years’ tab. We hope you enjoy KH’s Showcasing of their excursion to Golden Ridge Farm Dural. http://www.panania-p.schools.nsw.edu.au Last Monday week at the P&C meeting I was presented with a cheque for $10,000; a very humbling experience indeed! I am well aware that much effort goes in to raising these additional funds for our school and so was very excited to inform the staff at our Administration Meeting the next day. We have committed the funds to our iPad Program, with 50 new iPads being put into classroom use next term. My sincere thanks to the P&C and all community members, on behalf of the staff, for this generous donation. I am committed to seeing funds raised and donated expended as soon as possible so that the students whose parents contributed so generously benefit.

LOST ON SCHOOL GROUNDS

A red and black Lego Watch was lost on the school grounds approximately 1-2 weeks ago. This was a prized possession of one of our younger students. If you find the watch, please bring it to the School Office so we may return it to its very upset owner.

PARKING AROUND SCHOOL GROUNDS

It has come to our attention that parents/carers are parking illegally in the Disabled Parking space in Lawler Street. This space is reserved for cars displaying the Disabled Sticker on their front windscreen. A couple of our parents who need to use this space have been disadvantaged by people parking in this space illegally. We have been given the registration number of the offending vehicle/s and would hate to publish them. Also a number of vehicles have been sighted stopping in the middle of the road in Lawler Street adjacent to the main school gate to drop children off in the mornings. Not only is this an unsafe practice, it is teaching our students bad habits when it comes to road safety. For the benefit of all our students, parents and carers, please be mindful and park safely around the school grounds. This plea to the community is so often repeated and so often ignored. We have had many near misses in terms of accidents to our students and would hate anyone to be injured (or worse) as has happened at a number of schools this year and in the past; mostly due to careless road safety practices. Imagine the cost to the school community emotionally if that were to happen here!

This will be a community event and families are welcome along with social groups and serious runners alike. All runners will be timedand the opportunity is there to not only challenge yourself, but friends, other club members and social groups as well. Join on your own, as a family group – the choice is yours. There will be category trophies awarded on the day and a special prize for the best novelty group of 4 or more. Group discount applies to teams of 4 or more. A sausage sizzle, drinks and coffee will all be available. There is no better settin settin to enjoy a family or social picnic. There will be a 10km run and 5km fun run/walk. The 10km starts at 8.15 am – 5km fun run/walk starts at 8.30 am. Proceeds this year will donated to Women’s Helath and support of the campaign against Domestic Violence. Register now on the Padstow Rotary Club wesite – www.padstowrotary.org.au
