SOC Bird List 2017/ lista de aves SOC 2017
Introduction/Introducción Since the first edition of the official “Checklist of the Birds of the Canary Islands/Lista de las Aves de las Islas Canarias” in 2001 a great number of changes have been produced in the status of the birds of this archipelago and therefore to this list. Cleaning the blur picture created by A. Martin and J.A. Lorenzo in 2001 [see appendix in Garcia-del-Rey and Garcia Vargas (2013)] has not been an easy task as these authors included both official (i.e. accepted by the national committee) and unofficial records of vagrants, despite the fact that J.A. Lorenzo was a member of the national rarities committee. A first attempt was given by Garcia-del-Rey (2011) in the checklist at the end of the field guide. However, the knowledge of “true vagrant” versus “rare migrant” was not straightforward and needed a deeper analysis. More recently, a second attempt was provided by Garcia-del-Rey and Garcia Vargas (2013) that compiled all known observations of rarities and divided them into “reliable” versus “unreliable”, the latter also provided in an appendix of that book. These authors recommended to the national committee that species such as Mallard, Sooty Shearwater, Eurasian Hobby, Peregrine Falcon, Little Crake, Little Gull, Little Tern, Black Tern, Black-eared Wheatear, Fieldfare and Isabelline Warbler, should be include as “vagrants” in the national list, but this recommendation has not been taken into consideration. A third attempt to improve this list was provided by Garcia-del-Rey (2015), who based on a representative number of observations or a geolocator study adjusted the status of species such as Sacred Ibis, Red-billed Tropicbird, Grey Phalarope, Long-tailed Skua, Mediterranean Gull, Sabine´s Gull, Audouin´s Gull, Arctic Tern, Grasshopper Warbler, not considered as “vagrants” in the Canary Islands anymore by SOC. This list has been dramatically improved in the new Helm field guide (Garcia-del-Rey, 2018).
2 Canary List_2018.indd 4
Introduction/ introducción
National vs regional scenario/escenario nacional vs regional A number of unprecedented changes in the members of the national committee in 2015 has left the Canaries uncovered for a vast number of true vagrants, both national, regional and local (see Appendix 1 in Rouco et al. 2015). The new criteria and definition of rarity by this committee can´t be extrapolated at the archipelago scale and therefore SOC does not accept it. To add to this, the committee has recently changed Louisiana Waterthrush, first accepted 25 years ago, for Northern Waterthrush. To counterbalance this new national scenario, a new local Canarian rarities committee was created by Dr. Eduardo Garcia-del-Rey (i.e. Comite de Rarezas de SOC or CRSOC) in September 2016. The mission of this committee is to reliable accept records of true vagrants (also those removed today from the national list), regional vagrants (not considered by the national list) and those of local interest. All these records will be published in an annual report in this annual checklist (see page 14). The objective of this list is to provide both SOC members (local or foreign) and collaborators with a practical tool that can be used during 2018 to learn and know which records are of interest and thus worth reporting. Unfortunately, this will never be possible at national scale (some years behind) and the SOC list does not expect to match the national list due to differences in temporal scale.

Recent changes to the Canarian list by CR-SOC/ Cambios recientes en la lista canaria por CR-SOC The first changes made by CR-SOC in autumn 2016 were removing Dunnock and Grey Catbird both accepted with no pictures nationally. All records accepted by the national committee with no pictures have been removed in the present checklist. Conclusion/ Conclusión This is the official list of the Birds of the Canary Islands compiled by Dr. Eduardo Garcia-del-Rey current president of Sociedad Ornitológica Canaria-SOC. Taxonomy follows IOC. On this list the observations made at the Conception Bank have been included as belonging to this archipelago. Future debate should be undertaken to keep them or remove them from the Canary Island list. From now own, this list will never match the national list because the term “vagrant” has been treated differently.
