CHRISTMAS IS COMING Luke 12:36-40 In today’s society, it’s unfathomable that anyone could miss Christmas, with all the promotions and sales and run-up to the holiday. But at that first Christmas, most of the world missed that event, completely missing the signs in Scripture. Now consider that Jesus is coming back again. In the same way that Scripture revealed the facts about Jesus’ birth, God’s Word has laid out the signs that show Christ’s return is soon. We already celebrate Jesus’ first coming. How can we be ready for His second coming? PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES 1. We should be watching for Him. In Verse 37, Jesus says that there is a blessing for those who are watching for His return. And as the signs of the second coming become more evident, it is even more important for us to be watching for His return. 2. We should be ready to go. We should be living in such a way that, if Christ were to come back right now, we would not be ashamed of how we are living. If we really believe that Christ is coming back, then it should reveal itself in our behavior (1 John 3:2-3). It should make us want to be more godly. 3. We should be anxiously waiting His return. Have you ever anxiously waited for someone to visit? You pace the floor, looking out the window, anticipating the moment they show up. That should be our reaction to the knowledge that Jesus is coming back. Our hearts should echo the apostle John’s words: “Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20). 4. We should be working. If watching is the evidence of faith, then working is the evidence of faith in action. Watching for Christ’s return helps prepare ourselves, but working ensures that others come with us. RELEVANT REMINDERS Another thing we should be doing is encouraging one others (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). We should comfort those who are hurting and seemingly without hope, reminding them of God’s promises to believers or sharing the hope that they can have in Christ. APPLICABLE ACTIONS Christmas is coming. The signs are all around us, and most of us are ready. But it is just a holiday, and much of it will be forgotten. Know this: Christ Himself is coming. Most people missed it when He came the first time. Let’s not miss it when He comes again. Let’s be ready for His return.
