Record number of patrons mob center for Thanksgiving Alert the media! SCBC set a record Nov. 21 at their

Thanksgiving meal: a record 219 came, saw and conquered the holiday turkey feast. “We’ve been told that this is the biggest turnout anyone can remember,” executive director Tammy Copelan said of the crowd. She added that were plenty of kudos to go around for all who made the event such a success. That list would include Kelley Ferrence of Right at Home senior care for a fantastic veggie platter; Capriotti’s, for a scrumptious mushroom bisque soup; and Vinny’s Pizzeria, for big discounts on food items. She said big hands also go out to the kitchen staff of Lacey, Shannon and Melinda and volunteers Tom and Don. All those meals meant a whole lot of work preparing and cleaning up afterwards.

Line dancing offered every Friday

Get instep at SCBC Seniors can dance their way to good health with line dance classes Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at SCBC. Instructors Nancy and Richard Robinson have taught line dancing for several years, both here in Southern Nevada and in their old stomping grounds in Middleton, New York. Of their many accomplishments are line dance classes for the visually impaired. Nancy, who herself has progressive macular degeneration, trained a group of eight blind dancers-half of whom were completely without sight. She said she and Richard used a variety of techniques, including instructing students to “see” in their mind’s eye the face of a clock and coordinate their feet to the different numbers. According to fitness experts, activities like line dancing are great for overall health—improving balance, stamina and even mental acuity, since learning the steps challenges the mind. It’s also fun. In addition their classes at SCBC, the Robinsons also teach in Henderson, both at the senior center and at Club Fortune. For more info contact the center, or reach them via email at [email protected].

Sign up for Fiesta Casino trip It’s Fiesta time at SCBC, a trip to the Fiesta Casino in Henderson, that is. The casino bus leaves SCBC at 3p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17th. Sign up at the SCBC front desk. Page 3

The next training classes for elder abuse and volunteer care will be Monday, Dec. 16. The classes are required by state and federal aging agencies as conditions towards granting over $100,000 to SCBC. All of the center’s volunteers must complete the classes. For those who can’t attend the next class, other trainings are set for March and June.

Memberships expire soon; sign-up campaign now underway SCBC started their membership drive Monday, Dec. 9th. All current 2013 memberships will expire on Dec. 31st. Members enjoy access to all the center’s numerous events and activities. Anyone 50 or older can join. The annual fee is $12.00

Tooty toots for newsletter God forbid we be caught tooting our own horn…but…SCBC’s newsletter was recently named the best senior center newsletter in the state of Nevada. The newsletter was selected as the model other senior centers should emulate as part of a competition sponsored by Verizon. Judges said SCBC’s newsletter was “informative and had a great use of color.” We are assuming they meant color on the pages. Not the colorful words the writers and editors use during computer crashes.
