that never interrupts workflow, even at the time of a software upgrade. In addition, the on-time delivery of data is of prime importance, which is why CIBIL needs a database that processes information much faster.

Solution CIBIL evaluated database solutions from Oracle and DB2 software from IBM before deciding to go with IBM IDS 11.5. The reasons for not migrating to another solution are clear.

Easy implementation IBM has designed an architecture to implement a three-node Shared Disk

Secondary (SDS) cluster. The architecture involves a primary server and two failover servers. The clustering feature of IDS 11.5 allows CIBIL to link multiple machines to share a common database. In the event of any one of the servers failing, the other servers take the load, reducing downtime to almost zero. This failover mechanism guarantees the high availability of CIBIL’s database. The implementation of this architecture takes little over 24 hours and can be done outside working hours.

High availability architecture CIBIL’s database has to be up 24/7 for processing, uploading, and accessing files and reports. With IDS 11.5 and the MACH-11 feature suite, CIBIL carries out both online and offline processing of files, generating and delivering reports during been able to achieve an architecture with high availability.

growing data in a highly secure environment.

IDS 11.5 is capable of high volume Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) as well as handling integrated applications, enabling the database to easily keep up with business growth. IDS 11.5 has helped CIBIL cut down processing time by 50-60 percent by adding more vigour to the database with improved processing speed. The data uploaded is therefore more current and has taken care of a key customer

Client Profile to both increased consumerism and increased competition among banks to expand their credit portfolios. However, these socio-economic conditions created the threat of credit delinquency. In order to maintain a healthy credit market, the Government of India and the Reserve Bank of India established the Credit Information Bureau India Limited (CIBIL) in 2000. CIBIL helps banks, financial institutions, non-banking financial companies, housing finance companies and credit card companies by collecting, collating and disseminating credit information pertaining to both commercial and consumer borrowers. It has improved the quality of the portfolio of its credit grantor members by helping them make better informed, more objective and faster credit decisions. CIBIL has also benefitted the functionality and stability of the Indian financial system by containing the Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) of its members.

Challenges From the time CIBIL was set up till today, the amount of data that they handle has gone up 20 to 30 times. Today, they upload over 70 million files a month. And the data they manage is going to continue to grow exponentially. Under such circumstances, CIBIL needs a database management system that is scalable and robust enough to handle the load. Given that CIBIL handles highly sensitive and confidential customer data, building and maintaining the trust of its customers depends largely on the availability of information. If systems were to go down even for a short time it would mean a loss of business. CIBIL therefore requires a database solution

need - to ensure that the database is as fresh and relevant as possible.

“We upgraded to IDS 11.5 to keep pace with our increased online processing volume. The high availability architecture has ensured we have zero downtime. We have been able to cut down processing time by 50-60 percent, thereby providing our customers more current data, and more and better quality reports. This, in turn, has helped us improve our revenues, and helped our customers take credit decisions faster.”

Load balancing The load balancing feature of the three-node clustering has enabled CIBIL to distribute workloads evenly across the system. If the load is high on the primary server, the secondary servers take over, ensuring that members have quick and easy access to reports at all times. In addition, IDS 11.5 provides a disaster recovery system, leaving no room for doubt in CIBIL’s impeccable service to its members.
