CLASSICAL MUSIC or FOLK MUSIC

Classical music is distinguished by its wide use of instruments of varying tones and pitches to create a deep, rich sound. The different movements of classical music were affected by the invention and modification of instruments throughout time. We can’t forget the human voice, which is part of the Opera. Haydn has often been referred to as the “father of classical music.” His work was an influence for others who wrote classical music. However, though he is considered the progenitor of classical music, he is less familiar to most audiences than other composers such as Mozart, Beethoven or Bach. Mozart wrote symphonies, music for quartets and quintets, chamber orchestra pieces, choral pieces, piano concertos, and entire operas. He is perhaps best known for his opera The Magic Flute. Beethoven is particularly known for his symphonies. His sixth symphony is probably most recognized because of its pastorale, a section of music used in the Disney film Fantasia. Classical music is opposed to Traditional music.

Traditional music is the term we now use to refer to "folk music", that is, music and songs that have proven the test of time and

grandparents. Folk music has these characteristics:

It was transmitted through an oral tradition, people used to memorize songs, and they don’t know who wrote or composed the song.

The music was often related to national culture.

They commemorate historical and personal events such as Easter, Christmas, weddings, birthdays, etc. These events are noted with songs, dances and special costumes.

Fusion of cultures: music can be a blend of influences. For example, an electric guitar can be added to an old song.

Non-commercial: they are occasionally performed without any profit motive.

IRISH FOLK MUSIC

IRELAND Ireland is an island off western Europe in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. The Republic of Ireland (also called Ireland or Éire in Gaelic) occupies most of the island of Ireland; it is an independent country. The northern portion is Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom. The capital city of Ireland is Dublin, and people from Ireland are called Irish. In the past, St. Patrick arrived to help convert the pagan Gaelic Kings to Christianity. So Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17th, is the national holiday of Ireland. Everybody dresses in green and there are a lot of traditional songs and folk music to commemorate this date. The harp (cláirseach) and the small harp (cruit) were the main historical musical instruments of Ireland. Dances include jigs, reels, hornpipes and sets.

An Irish Traditional Song The Wild Rover I've been a wild rover for many a year I spent all my money on whiskey and beer, But now I'm returning with gold in great store And I never will play the wild rover no more. CHORUS And it's no, nay, never, No nay never no more, Will I play the wild rover No never no more. I went to an ale-house I used to frequent I told the landlady my money was spent. I asked her for credit, she answered me "nay Such a custom as yours I could have any day." CHORUS I took from my pocket ten sovereigns bright And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight. She said "I have whiskey and wines of the best And the words that you told me were only in jest." CHORUS I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done And I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son. And if they caress me as ofttimes before Then I never will play the wild rover no more. CHORUS
