H IDEAWAY CAFÉ

Gracious dining under windswept palms at this cozy gem of a restaurant STORY BY DIVINA YUMOL WITH PAT LOWE-Updated 2017

T

ucked away on the sleepy island of Grassy Key is a gourmand’s treasure. In operation for MORE THAN 25 YEARS at Rainbow Bend Resort, the Hideaway Cafe has always maintained a reputation for excellence in serving top-notch cuisine and is one of the few places that local residents can feel they are truly “getting away from it all.” With an ocean view to match its delicious food, it is indeed a rare treat and a unique dining experience at this pleasant gem of a restaurant, whether it’s for morning breakfast or a fullblown Continental dinner. Over the years, we have watched this best kept secret in the Keys blossom into one of the most sought-after places for a romantic dinner with that special someone. A place that offers an extensive choice of GREAT FOOD AND FINE WINES, personalized service and attention to detail. One is struck by the intimacy of this true “hideaway.” The staff greets its guests like they are already part of the family. While the chef creates delicious magic, like any artist constantly experimenting with new combinations of ingredients, keeping ONLY THE BEST. While you peruse the menu, the friendly waitstaff will bring you a plate of warm French bread. For starters, I highly recommend one of the escargot selections or French Onion soup, washed down with an excellent GLASS OF WINE. There is a wine list of a first-class caliber, so you are sure to find one to your liking. ESCARGOT A LA EDISON appeals to the sight as well as to the taste: Cognac-flamed escargot are complimented with red, green and white julienne vegetables cooked al dente and arranged in a delicate pool of light cream sauce flavored with garlic and pepper. The variety and scope of this menu is truly amazing: LOBSTER, SEAFOOD CREPES, ROASTED WHOLE DUCK, JUMBO SHRIMP DIshes and fresh local seafood, just to name a few. There is a selection here to please everyone, from the traditional Rack of Lamb, Grouper Francaise and Filet Medallions to

something from a different continent such as the BEEF WELLINGTON AND SHRIMP SCAMPI. The menu ranges from soups, appetizers, seafood, aged beef and pasta, plus daily specials. The chef creates a vegetable of the day from an array of Seasonal Vegetables The Hideaway’s beef selections include the chef’s special RIB STEAK OVER 2 LBS. one of the best FILET MIGNONS I’ve ever tasted, and STEAK AU POIVRE. The Hideaway’s entrees may be sauteed in wine and flavored with fresh herbs or stuffed with tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach or prosciutto. There is a dessert selection featuring a variety that would do a much larger, sophisticated restaurant proud. I highly recommend the CHEF’S BANANA’S FOSTER OR CREME BRULE. The chef is a genius at combining flavors which complement and enhance each other, and has mastered the art of orchestrating great meals. Seating is in a cozy, mirrored, glass-enclosed and air-conditioned dining room, or if you wish you can do without air-conditioning, on a jalousie-window enclosed balcony that opens onto soft ocean breezes, while overlooking the pool, beach and ocean. Everything complements the dark wooden wine racks that line the patina-colored walls framed by CARIBBEAN-STYLE floor-to-ceiling shutters. Candles cast a romantic glow over each linen clothed table, a setting fit for lovers. The cafe is small, seating is limited and management wants to keep it that way. Hideaway Cafe certainly does know how to put together flavors. If a customer wants something that is not on the menu, they will happily fix it if the ingredients are available. Hideway Cafe is located at Rainbow Bend Resort on GRASSY KEY, MILE MARKER 58, oceanside. Look for the big rainbow-style sign, on the oceanside. The cafe is upstairs leading you even closer to the SWAYING PALMS, the STARS and the BEST FULL MOON VIEWS!

The irate customer calling the newspaper office, loudly demanded to know where her Sunday edition was. “Madam”, said the newspaper employee, “today is Saturday. There was quite a long pause on the other end of the phone, followed by a ray of recognition as she was heard to mutter, “Well, shit, that explains why no one was at church either.

The ‘Best Cigar’ in the World!

Who else but the Island Smoke Shop, South Florida’s LARGEST full service tobacconist could lay claim to selling the “Best Cigar in the World?” No one. It’s that simple! The El Original, a cigar sold exclusively at the Island Smoke Shop, has been proclaimed “The HighestRated Maduro in the World” by the prestigious international publication, SMOKE Magazine! Tasted by a panel of 20 cigar reviewers, The El Original received numerous other awards for its quality, consistency and flavor from industry experts. Made in a tiny factory in Miami’s “Little Havana”, the El Original was developed by famous cigar-roller Santiago Cabana, who grew up working in Cuba’s cigar industry. Formerly a Master Blender in Havana’s cigar factories, Santiago is well known within the trade. The El Original is the result of 5 years of careful development and refinement. Mile Markers – What’s the Deal? US 1 is used to travel the islands of the

Florida Keys. Location: along the hightway are expressed by Mile Marker numbers. The ZERO Mile Marker is found in Key West. Mile Marker numbers continue to increase until the pass through the Monroe County line at Mile Marker 112, north of Key Largo. Look for small green signs with white numbers posted at each mile along US 1 (these used to be the original mile posts installed along the old railroad bed). Special note: Mile marker references are commonly used in local addresses. When there is a B or O this denotes either Bayside (north-Gulf of Mexico side) or Oceanside (south-Atlantic Ocean side) location.

A GOLFER’S LOVE STORY…

(Happy Grandparents Day!)

An elderly couple were having dinner one evening when the husband reached across the table, took his wife’s hand in his and said, “Martha, soon we will be married 50 years, and there’s something I have to know. In all of these 50 years, have you ever been unfaithful to me?” Martha replied, “Well Henry, I have to be honest with you. Yes, I’ve been unfaithful to you on three occasions during these 50 years, but always for a good reason. Henry was obviously hurt by his wife’s confession, but said, “I never suspected. Can you tell me what you mean by ‘good reasons’?” Martha said, “The first time was shortly after we were married, and we were about to lose our little house because we couldn’t pay the mortgage. Do you remember that evening I went to see the banker and the next day he notified you that the loan would be extended?” Henry recalled the visit to the banker and said, “I can forgive you for that. You saved our home, but what about the second time?” Martha asked, “Do you remember when you were so sick, but we didn’t have the money to pay for the heart surgery you needed? Well, I went to see your doctor one night and, if you recall, he did the surgery at no charge.” “I recall that,” said Henry. “And you did it to save my life, so of course I can forgive you for that. Now tell me about the third time.” “All right,” Martha said. “So do you remember when you ran for president of your golf club, and you needed 73 more votes?”

Welcome back to “For Music’s Sake”, for a look at the playlist for this month. Featured in our cover story in this issue, The Island Fish Company proudly hosts this fall’s installment of Boatapalooza on September 9th. So fuel up your skiff, cat, center console, jet ski, houseboat, bowrider, cuddy cabin, yacht or tug, because it’s all about the boats, ‘bout the boats, no dinghies. Oh wait, you can bring your dinghy too! You could also just carb load and paddle yourself there. It’s up to you. Popular with both tourists and locals alike, with great views, and great food, The Island is a place to remember, making it a great destination in the town of Marathon. (Please don’t say “Marathon Key”, it is an amateur mistake) Entertaining at Boatapalooza from noon until 5 will be Uncle Smokey, LOWER KEYS featuring Felix “The Cat” Hanson on bass and vocals Boondocks: daily: Mon: Terry Cassidy Jam, 5/1, 22: Girls Night Out formerly of the band Baga Tricks. On guitar and vocals is with Host Adrienne Z, Terry Cassidy & Adrienne Z, Jade Storm Luke Sommer Glenn, of The Luke Sommer Glenn Band, Unplugged ... and on drums is Jaime Vila from the band Eclipse. Look Looe Key Tiki Bar: Mon: Trivia, Tue: Jam Night... for a blend of classic and southern rock, some low down Mangrove Mama’s: nightly: Sun: Michelle Dravis, Wed: Emily Springdirty blues and a healthy portion of reggae from these steen, Thur: Robert Douglas... My New Joint: nightly: Tue: : Adrienne Z... Sugarloaf Lodge Tiki Bar: guys as they turn up the funk and turn on the ladies. music Sat 8-12pm... As a musician, one of my favorite places to play in the MIDDLE KEYS Keys is The Looe Key Tiki Bar, commonly referred to Castaways: Wed-Sun 7-10pm.. simply as “The Tiki” by locals. The Looe Key Reef Resort on Ramrod Key plays host to this really funky tiki bar, which is truly a local’s haunt. You can also bring your best friend, because they are dog friendly and there are always some friendly dogs there! Home to the largest stage and dancefloor in the middle Keys it’s a great place to catch some live music and shake your booty. Some highlights for the month of September are as follows. The Rugcutters play Fridays the 8th and 22nd. Ray West will be performing with his full band on Saturday the 9th, and will also be performing solo acoustic on Thursday the 14th. Catch Phoenix on Saturday the 16th for the halfway to St. Patty’s day party. A Brian Roberts solo performance takes place on Thursdays 21st and 28th. He sounds great and is also nice to look at! Haywire rocks the house on Saturday the 29th. John Andrews plays every Wednesday, and the infamous Taco Jam Band plays every Tuesday for the keys biggest jam session.

All show times are 6-10 Tuesday through

Thursday , and 7-11on Friday and Saturday.

Confucius says, ”Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”, and Bob Ross says, “There are no mistakes, just happy accidents.”
