APPENDIX TEACHING INNOVATIONS (a)

Educational Charts: To make the teaching of Botany more interesting, easier and time saver, I have got prepared more than 40 charts of 30" x 40" size on different aspects of 'Algae' and ‘Biological Techniques’. These charts are in continuous use for last many years. These charts have been photographed and saved in the albums. Please see the albums.

(b)

Using Mnemonic: Mnemonic means “related to the memory or aiding the process of recalling or memorizing.” A process or a series of steps taken to help a person to memorize things are called as “mnemonics”. In other words, a mnemonic is a memory aid. For example: VIBGYOR is a mnemonic to remember 7 colours of sunlight, viz: Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. Similarly we can remember 20 elements essential for plants by using a mnemonic, otherwise it is difficult to remember. See Figure on separate page.

Projector Slides (35 mm): A large collection of more than 2,500 projector slides (35mm) for BSc and MSc students to make a perfect perception of different aspects of Biology, specially Botany and Agriculture. 1. Algae: 100 slides on the diversity in morphology, reproduction and inter-relationships among different groups of algae, gifted by Prof Linda Graham, USA. These include: Anabaena, Gloeocapsa, Nostoc, Chara, Cladophora, Closterium, Cosmarium, Gonium, Scendesmus, Spirogyra, Ulothrix, Volvox, Zygnema, Aulodiscus, diatoms, phytoplanktons, dinoflagellates, cryptomonad, Stauroneis, Hantzschia, Stephanodiscus, Vaucheria, Ectocarpus, Fucus, Laminaria,

Chlorokybus, Coleochaete, Chaetosphaeridium, Netrium, Pinnularia, Stephanodiscus, Phacus, Micrasterias, Hematococcus, Dictyota, Halimeda, Emiliania, Sargassum, Chrococcus, Euglena, Oscillatoria, Trachelomonas, Ceratium, Mougeotia, Tabellaria, Haematococcus, Scytonema, Trentepohlia, Cylindrospermum, Postelsia, Macrocystis, Goneostemum, Dinobryon, Ascophyllum, Bangia, Ulva, Cylindrocystis, Peridinium, synuria, Acetabularia, Polysiphonia and Batrachospermum

2. Fungi: 105 slides on different aspects of fungi. Prof Tom Gulya of USDA, USA, gifted these slides. These include: Albugo, Alternaria, Botrytis, Coleosporium, Fusarium, Orobanche, Phoma, Phomopsis, Puccinia, Sclerotina and Septoria.

3. Nematodes: 100 slides of nematodes, donated by USDA scientist Dr Zafar Handoo on different aspects.

4. Nutrient Deficiency Symptoms: 50 great slides on different nutrient deficiency symptoms gifted by a great authority on plant nutrition Prof Arthur Wallace, USA.

5. Sunflower Diseases: Excellent slides on viral, fungal, bacterial and nematic diseases on sunflower. 6. USDA’s Slides:

Moreover, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) generously donated more than 1000 excellent 35 mm projector colour slides regarding recent advances in agricultural research and their practical benefits. I show these slides to my student to keep them update regarding recent advances in plant and agricultural research. (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) (i) (j)

(d) A Model for Understanding the Mechanism of Opening & Closing of the Stomata: This model is very interesting and provides a clear understanding to the question that how the stomata of the leaf become open (instead of closing) when the osmotic pressure increases in the guard cells.

Film Strips: This is also an innovative teaching aid in which filmstrip is projected on a screen using a projector and a cassette is run in synchronization. In this way the students

view and listen the lesson simultaneously, getting a thorough perception of the subject. I have following filmstrips.

Mitosis Microslides: I have introduced this teaching aid in the department. These are 35mm image strips that are viewed using a Microslide Viewer, made up of high-impact styrene plastic. The viewer has two adjusting knobs for focusing (Fig.1). Each Microslide lesson includes a strip of 35 mm film showing different images of stained specimens photographed under ideal condition, from whole mount to electron micrographs. National Teaching Aids Inc. donated the following Microslide Lesson Sets. New York, USA.
