Conferences: A Catalyst for New Ideas

I

t will be February 2013 when you receive this issue of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (SPM), but this editorial was written several weeks before the end of 2012. The last several weeks have been very busy and hectic for many of us, finishing paper submissions for the 38th International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP), to be held 26–31 May 2013 in Vancouver, Canada. We all felt relieved once the papers had been uploaded before the due date of 30 November 2012. For some colleagues, it is the start of even more hard work, reviewing dozens of papers in a short period so that the authors can get quality reviews on time and find Digital Object Identifier 10.1109/MSP.2012.2235754 Date of publication: 12 February 2013

out whether they can present their work at the most comprehensive technical conference on signal processing and its applications and the flagship conference of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS). High-standing conferences such as ICASSP feature first-class plenary meetings, tutorials, exhibits, and lecture and poster sessions. It is a forum for many researchers seeking feedback for their work and for those who want to identify the most recent advances in signal processing theory and applications. For the editorial team of SPM, it is an important event in which potential experts are solicited to submit special issues or feature articles on these most recent advances, to be published in survey articles and brought bimonthly to the signal processing community.

IEEE SIGNAL PROCESSING MAGAZINE  [2] march 2013

For this issue, I invited Z. Jane Wang, area editor for the Inside Signal Processing eNewsletter (eNews), a monthly electronic newsletter that complements SPM, to report on eNews. The eNews lists, inter alia, selected signal processing conferences, an important source for signal processing practitioners who wish to identify conferences and workshops they may consider attending. In an era of extensive electronic communication, it is hard to keep up with all e-mails one receives. However, I encourage you to read eNews and welcome your suggestions for interesting new content.
